Isolettes are environments for newborn high-risk babies. Their purpose is to monitor child’s vital signs and
to keep the temperature stable. Cincinnati General Hospital uses a computer system named Alcyon and
the thermal environment of Isolette to monitor and record the baby’s vital signs. In the nurse-computer
system, the nurse has three responsibilities.
Firstly, to see that each four skin thermistors (temperature probes) are in their proper places; one must be
taped to infant, one each to the front and the top of the Isolette and one suspended in the air of the
enclosure to properly measure the temperature. The other end of each thermistor is plugged into an input
box which transmits the information to the computer. There is also a visual alert on the screen near the
ceiling level to call for human evaluation of particular Isollatte.
Secondly, to examine the information collected by the computer and use it in making care decisions and
problem solving. Each nursery has the terminals for the input of initial information on the baby and for
requesting data on its current status.
Lastly, fill the infant’s needs to be turned, fed, have diapers changed, and to bond with its parents. In other
words, the nurses must recognize the importance of the therapeutic nurse-parent relationship. They must
never feel that the child is on “automatic pilot”. A skilled nurse can see the infant “doesn’t look right” before
the computer notes the changes in the vital signs.
