Module Guide for EDMATH1 – TEACHING MATH IN THE PRIMARY GRADES

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course equips future elementary teachers with pedagogical content knowledge for the teaching of basic contents in Mathematics in the primary level. Understanding
of key concepts and skills of whole numbers up to 10,000, fractions, measurement, simple geometric figures, pre-algebra concepts and data presentation and analysis are
applied using appropriate technology.
Different teaching strategies and methodologies that can be used in teaching mathematics in primary level will be presented in the course, as well as, the understanding
of the nature of the primary grade learners. The course will also introduce construction of lesson plans intended for the primary grade levels, different teaching aids and
manipulatives and assessment tools that will help their pupils on learning mathematics.
The course will enhance the students’ skills in problem solving, decision making, critical thinking, logic, innovation, resourceful, time-management, communicating,
and collaboration. In the end, it will develop the competencies of the future teachers in teaching Mathematics in primary grade pupils through constructing self-made lesson

The graduates of BEEd have the ability to:

1. Demonstrate in-depth understanding of the diversity of learners in various learning areas,


2. Manifest meaningful and comprehensive pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) of the different subject areas,
3. Utilize appropriate assessment and evaluation tools to measure learning outcomes,
4. Manifest skills in communication, higher order thinking and use of tools and technology to accelerate learning and teaching,
5. Demonstrate positive attributes of a model teacher, both as an individual and as a professional, and
6. Manifest a desire to continuously pursue personal and professional development.

At the end of the course, the pre-service teachers will be able to:

1. Demonstrate content knowledge and skills in teaching the K-12 BEC Mathematics for the primary grades to promote literacy and numeracy skills.
2. Demonstrate research-based pedagogical content knowledge and skills in teaching the K-12 BEC Mathematics curriculum for the primary grades through learning
environments that nurture and inspire learner participation.
3. Apply appropriate teaching strategies that develop critical and creative thinking and/or other higher- level thinking skills.
4. Show skills in the selection, development and use of a variety of teaching and learning resources, including ICT, to address learning goals aligned to meet curriculum
requirements.
5. Show knowledge and skills in designing, selecting and using assessment tools aligned with the curriculum requirement in teaching mathematics in the primary level.
