Prepositions – Guidelines:
A preposition is a word that is placed before a noun or pronoun to show its relationship in regard to
something else.
The correct use of preposition depends on the understanding of the meaning of a sentence and the
mutual relationship of various words to make it meaningful. Sometimes a different preposition
changes the meaning of the sentence entirely or a wrong preposition makes the sentence
meaningless. Thus, the use of a correct preposition is likea well set design making the sentence
impressive and effective.
In this question eight sentences with blanks are set and you are expected to fill in the blanks with
appropriate prepositions.
The only way to do well in this part of question 5 is practice. So take up a grammar book and study
the chapter on prepositions.
The better command you have over the language, the better you will be in this exercise. So develop
a reading habit.
Read newspapers, books and articles beyond the curriculum. This will not only help you get a better
idea about prepositions, it will also stand you in good stead when you sit to write the English English
language paper.
