Fast and furious 7 analysis

- The editing used on female bodies create them to appear different and more to
what the people expect them to look like. For example, different flawless skin,
thin muscle.
- They present most female with little clothing. Like in ff7 Ramsey is slowly
showed in a bikini
- Editing of slow motion but without showing their faces
- The men when talking about the women use words like ‘dibs’ and ‘that’
instead of treating them on equal lengths
- The slow motion of Ramsey walking out the sea begins with her legs going up
to her face but only gives her faces a couple of milliseconds before cutting to
the next
- The use of voyeurism when the two witness Ramsey in the water
- When dialogue begins the camera looks directly at the two talking but cuts in
with the female breasts
- The music when Ramsey is in the water contrast with what the lyrics are
saying
- The other female seen on camera are seen with only bikinis

Women in the clip all wearing bikinis, slow motion editing coupled with mid-
long shots focused on their backs and legs, heads are not in the shot.

Female character emerges from the water, intertextual reference to iconic

Bond moment of Ursula Andress also emerging from the water, parallel
editing, camera tilting up to reveal her body from ankles to face.

Two male characters’ dialogue suggests they are in competition over her e.g.
‘dibs’ and rock paper and scissors. Treating her like an object

Walks past the camera which her posterior in a mid-shot focusing attention.

She bends over to a pick up a towel and camera is positioned in front looking
at her body.

Eye-line match from two men to the woman, giving them power as they are
voyeuristically watching her.

Long shot of two men talking but two women pass the camera in close up and
all we see are breasts in shallow focus.
Analyse how the objectification of women is used in media texts?

In the media female bodies are represented as objects for example, camera
movements and shots that focus on the female’s body parts from the neck down,
never really presenting the actors face until dialogue is used. The constant usage of
flimsy costumes and focus of one body type show that identification of the women
present.

An example of this can be seen used in the movie ‘Fast and Furious 7’ where the
scene presents the audience on a beach in Abu Dhabi. The scene begins with the main
group exiting their cars and as this is happening three women walk past, all wearing
bikinis, in a slow motion editing coupled with a mid-long shot focusing mainly on the
backs and legs. As the camera reaches up towards their heads the head is cut off and
the scene where the main character dom.

-An idealised size zero or slim figure-airbrushed/soft lighting

-The camera often uses close up of female body parts as if it were a male looking at
the women
-The camera often introduces a women using a tilt-up movement from her feet
exploring her body
-This coupled with slow motion editing to emphasise the moment of looking

Taylor swift

- Taylor swift begins with being presented on a huge golden throne in a vibrant
red dress with a slit down the middle of it
- All women presented follow the same slim figure white/tan body type
- Very little wear on Taylor and the dancers with her on the floor
- The cage with the male bodyguards surrounding it shows that she is
suppressed by men
- The use of constant red lip uses to seduce the men
- This is taken from the femme fatale
- The idea of her being a queen
- The idea that she’ll get away with anything as long as she plays with the men
around her e.g. the car crash
- The idea that women are seen as shop mannequins that are easily replaceable
- The cheetah sitting in the passenger seat symbolling that she’s been
heartbroken
- Cut of the heads of the people with her
- Dog collar around her neck suggests submission
- Literal constructed as objects
- Pilling up of the women and casting them aside
- Significantly making it seem as if men don’t get what they want then they find
something better
- The group of men holding cameras suggest voyeurism
Media text objectify female bodies, for example denoting an idealised slim figure that
is smooth and flawless. This can be evident in ‘look what you made me do’ music
video by Taylor swift where her squad of mannequins are lined up from a high angle
long shot we can see they all have the same slim idealised body shape.

The camera often introduces women using a tilt up movement from the feet to her
head whilst exploring her body. This is presented when Taylor swift is seen sitting on
a large golden throne with snakes surrounding her. Whilst listening to her start the
music the camera travels up her legs to her face. This could suggest that the idea of
this was to give the audience a sense of pleasure so that they would continue to watch.
The audience could almost be seen as voyeuristic as we as the audience are looking at
Taylor with sexually desire without her knowing.

As the video continues the scene portrays Taylor swift in another throne like position
but this time inside a huge golden bird cage surrounded with men as bodyguards. As
this scene goes on the camera is again moving from a low angle up her thigh. This
would suggest the idea that she is submissive towards the men whilst she follows the
orders given. It could also suggest her being a part of a strip club seeing how her
clothes and tattoos are very exotic.

The media text also use the women’s often use of dressing to catch the male gaze
theory by making them extremely revealing. For example, in the TS music video
Taylor is seen with a bunch of women in what seems to be a cage, dressed in black
lactase lingerie with a large dog like collar. The use of the collar suggests the idea
she’s being submissive towards the men, as well as suggesting the idea that the man
she was with owned her almost like a dog and when didn’t get what was wanted left
her for disposal.
