Location Report

For my AS Level Film Studies portfolio, following a textual analysis of two

contemporary Drama/Crime films; Freedom Writers (2007, US) and
Kidulthood (2006, UK) in which I have explored how teenagers
protagonists are represented in each film. I continued to develop my
portfolio by planning a creative artefact based upon the central ideas from
my textual analysis, using the protagonists as a foundation for creating
my own. Therefore, reflecting the codes and convections of the
Drama/Crime genres and the main characters in them.
In addition, my intention is to create a short piece of film in the
Crime/Drama genre, based on my location report which consist of
numerous images, most external and this will showcase the environment I
intend to use in my creative artefact. From the surrounding environment I
intend to create tension through my actors, as well as through diegetic
and non-diegetic sound.

Location 1 A Long Lonely Alley Buck Walk

My first chosen location was an alley way located by the end on a road in
East London, Walthamstow. I chose this location as it was accessible to me
but i had to be careful of people walking pass. I intend to involve
cinematography; shots, angles, positioning and movement to employ
what is happening in the scenes. Through doing this I intend to create
suspense and to create even more suspense I will add on non-diegetic
music background music with gradual crescendo and the music will
fade out as he reaches the top of the alleyway. I have chosen this location
to enhance the genres of both of my films which are Crime/Genre based.

The lonely environment will create a sense of isolation and how this could
link to the lives of most teenagers, as the protagonist is seen walking up
the alley alone, thus creating a profound effect for the audience. This will
also include their costumes of hoodies and trainers linking to urban
culture.

Location 2 Long road Foresters Drive

This is my second location. This road will play a key part in my film
because the Kyle (Curtis Panda) will be seen walking and running on this
road. Most of the action will be taken on the road I intend to use mid and
long shots and the camera movement of tracking to show the characters
appearance and movement. He will be walking down this road, he will be
positioned in the middle of the road as he is walking down. I will use nondiegetic music background music with gradual crescendo and the
music will fade out as he reaches his destination which is the house with
an open window. This location is used to show the characters loneliness
and how he tries to handle business alone and the framing will implement
this. This similar to my textual analysis as teenage protagonists are
represented to be lonely and neglected.

Location 3 Exit of a roundabout Salters Road

This is my third location; it is a road exit from a roundabout. I intend to

finish my sequence on this road. This scene will show the teenage
protagonist running into Salters road as he is trying to get away from the
police. I intend to use over the shoulder, close up shots and low running
angles to create suspense as the protagonists is running. This is fairly
similar to Kidulthood as Trevor, Jay and Moony are seen running on a high
road but I decided to have my protagonist run on a quiet side road. The
framing will still show the protagonist to be lonely as he is in trouble no
one is there to help him. This will create action for the audience and leave
them to wonder if the protagonist got away from the police. As the
protagonist is running I will have non-diegetic music intense background
music to give the audience a sense of drama and suspense
