INTRODUCTION

Sumitomo Metals began manufacturing tubing, casing, drill pipe and line pipe more than thirty years ago. At
that time, well depths were shallow and oil and gas drilling was relatively uncomplicated.
Today, wells are going deeper, and drilling environments are becoming more hostile.
Sweet wells, sour wells, and wells operating in arctic conditions or at extraordinary well depths have become
commonplace. But these new types of wells require tubular products that are much more sophisticated and
more tailored than their predecessors. To meet these new challenges, Sumitomo developed the SM Series,
and a line of specialty tubular products (NEW SM Series) that are made from rugged materials like stainless
steel and high alloys.
In addition to the SM Series, Sumitomo Metals also produces stainless steel and high alloy line pipe, products
that were specially developed to fight H2S and CO2, corrosive compounds that are often found in pipeline-
transported crude oil and gas.
For more than five decades, Sumitomo has been serving the needs of the oil and gas industries. This
brochure provides a quick over-view of the family of quality Sumitomo products available to these vital
enterprises.
FACILITIES AND LOCATIONS

Sumitomo Metals has almost all kinds of steel pipe manufacturing facilities which produce a wide range of
seamless and welded steel pipe and tubes.
The main facilities are composed of our Steel Tube Works, Wakayama Steel Works, and Kashima Steel
Works.
These works are able to produce approximately three million metric tons of steel pipe and tubes annually.
The company also possesses facilities in affiliated companies in Sakai, Kashima and Koga.
Sumitomo's facilities and locations are tabulated on next page together with their available size ranges (O.D.).

SM-SERIES GRADE DESCRIPTION

Application of High Strength Grades for Deep Sour Gas & Oil Wells
As wells becomes deeper, high strength steels are needed for effective completion. Sumitomo can offer our
high strength and high toughness steel for such completions, and have supplied plenty of SM-G Grades all
over the world.
The smallest amount of H2S contamination should always be taken into consideration when looking at high
strength material applications.
Fig shows the applicability of high strength steels for sour service integrating the following variables; H2S
concentration, applied stress level and temperature.
Sulfide stress corrosion cracking susceptibility increases with material strength and grades such as SM150G
or SM155G should never be used if H2S is present.

2. CASING AND TUBING FOR SOUR OIL AND GAS SERVICE

In order to prevent possible sulfide stress corrosion cracking in sour gas and oil wells containing H2S, it is
necessary to use specially manufactured tubing and casing. API 5CT Group 2 grade tubing and casing have
been developed and used widely for this purpose. However these may not be adequate in high concentration
of H2S.
To address this, Sumitomo Metal, after years of research and development, has succeeded in developing
improved materials with higher strength and higher corrosion resistance for casing and tubing.
These are available in our SM-S & SM-SB series as shown below.
Each of these grades is produced with rigid manufacturing controls covering chemical composition, heat
treatment (quenching and tempering), tensile property, hardness and microstructure.

CHARACTERISTICS

1. Materials
The chemical compositions have been carefully determined to provide resistance to sulfide stress corrosion
cracking as well as to insure complete throughwall hardening.

2. Heat Treatment
Quenching and tempering is done under rigid temperature control to assure homogeneous physical
properties and metal structures.
New Higher Strength Sour Resistant Grades SM90SB SM-100SB, SM-C100, SM-C110 have been developed.

3. Micro Structure
These grades exhibit fully tempered martensite which is considered to be the most desirable for resistance to
sulfide stress corrosion cracking.

4. Tensile Properties and Hardness

Yield strength is limited within a narrow range and hardness is controlled to within the predetermined
maximum limit.
5. Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC) Performance
SM sour resistant grades are designed for 85%SMYS in NACE condition or equivalent method such as Sc
value (ex. Sc value).
Excellent SSC resistance has been achieved through rigorous, chemical composition, heat treatment,
microstructure, tensile properties, hardness and so on.

3. HIGH COLLAPSE CASING FOR DEEP WELL SERVICE

Sumitomo High Collapse Casing SM-T grade is a seamless product designed for deep wells where high
collapse pressures are anticipated. In order to meet deep well service requirements, SM-T casing has
improved collapse properties well in excess of API ratings. These properties are achieved by strict mill control
incorporating a unique production technique inclusive of quenching and tempering. SM-T casing shows a very
high resistance to tension load, internal pressure, and collapse. SM-95TS is also highly resistant to sulfide
stress corrosion cracking and can be used for deep and sour gas and oil service.

Sulfide Stress Corrosion Cracking of SM95TS : Sc Value㻢10

As wells are drilled deeper, the external pressures applied to well casings become greater. Thus, a well casing
must have adequate collapse strength to withstand these horizontal pressures without deformation. For
reasons of economy such casings should also be as light-weight as possible while still retaining ample
collapse resistance properties.
With this in mind Sumitomo Metals has developed its SM-T High Collapse Casing. This casing was developed
from experiments in which Sumitomo studied the critical collapse pressure of a well casing under external
pressure in relation to its longitudinal tensile strength and the geometry of its cross section.

CHARACTERISTICS
1. Unique Production Technique
The material for SM-T casing is carefully selected to insure structural homogeneity. Strict control of heat
treatment and dimensional tolerances is adhered to throughout the manufacturing process.

Brine with a corrosion inhibitor, a biocide, and an oxygen scavenger added is acceptable as a completion fluid
but careful investigation is required at selection brine and additives as a packer fluid.
An oil base solids free packer fluid is recommended, either diesel oil with a corrosion inhibitor additive or one
of the proprietary oil base packer (Drilling) fluids.
All fluids pumped into wells equipped with stainless steel materials should be adequately deoxygenized. Any
additives to completion brines and or packer fluids such as corrosion inhibitors, biocide, etc, should be
carefully selected to avoid possible degradation with time and subsequent negative effect on stainless steel
integrity. Generally Oil based solids free packer fluids such as diesel oil are acceptable.

5. H2S+CO2+CL- CORROSION (NI BASE ALLOY)

High Alloy Materials become necessary where severe well conditions with high concentrations of H2S, CO2
and CL- brines are encountered.
(1) High Ni corrosion resistant alloys for OCTG feature a single austenitic phase. Strength is developed
through cold working.
Addition of essential alloying elements such as Cr, Ni, Mo determines the corrosion resistance properties.
(2) Resistance to general (weight loss) corrosion and localized (pitting and crevice) corrosion is achieved by
the formation of a stable passivation film on the material surface.
(3) The effect of fundamental elements on corrosion behaviors are shown in the following Figures. These can
be recapped as follows.
㩷䊶Cr is effective for high temperature service.
㩷䊶Mo is effective for low PH condition.
㩷䊶n combined H2S, CO2, CL- media, the basic minimal chemistry of Cr㻢20%, Ni㻢30%, Mo㻢3% is required.
㩷䊶Hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility increases with material chemistries exceeding 60% Ni.
(4) Precipitation hardened alloys (P.H.) are required as base materials for down hole equipment accessories,
to be used in conjunction with CRA OCTG materials.
Our precipitation hardened alloys have superior properties at least comparable to conventional alloys.

Proven metal-to-metal sealing that works safely even under extreme

tension.
Anti-galling design and up-to-date surface treatment that pemits trouble-free
use of corrosion resistant alloy tubulars.
Hooked thread concept that optimizes stress distribution䋭supported by
finite element analysis䋭while resisting "jump out."
Streamlined internal profile capable of handling high velocity corrosive gas
flows.
A threaded and coupled concept that ensures repairability and allows the
use of cold worked corrosion resistant chromium and nickel alloys.
Available sizes from 23/8 " to 133/8 " O.D. Options
Special clearance couplings
Special bevel couplings
FEATURES OF PREMIUM CONNECTIONS

15䉙hooked thread for optimal load transmission and resistance to "jump

out."
Independent metal-to-metal multi-seal arrangement for excellent gas-tight
performance with burst and collapse pessure ratings equivalent to the pipe
body.
External torque shoulder for easy running.
Non-upset integral connection so damagad threads may be cut off and
remachined.

Newly patented sealing system with 20䉙apered metal-to-metal seal provides

gall-free gas-tightness which maintains their integrity, even under the most
severe condition as true tubing application in casing sizes (41/2"䌾14 ").
Hooked thread design increases resistance to jumping-out and decrease
hoop stress on coupling under higher bending and tension/compression,
making this connection suitable for application in long deviated or horizontal
well.
Reverse angle torque shoulder results in superior sealing performance and
structual resistance under severe combined load condition.
Streamlined internal profile with tight tolerance minimize gas flow
turbulance.
High compression version (VAM TOP HC) is available.
High torque version (VAM TOP HT) provides reinforced torque capacity for
liner application where high torque is anticipated.
Special coupling with 80% and 90% tensile effciency are avalilable.
FEATURES OF PREMIUM CONNECTIONS

Ideally suited to controlled-yield material

T&C design for controlled-yield material with no cold working or upsetting
that could alter metallurgy.
Self energizing metal-to-metal seal with 50% taper provides pressure
integrity to API minimum-yield.
Tensile efficiency equals 100%
Hook threads with 3䉙reverse angle and proper thread length prevent jump-
out under tension or bending, and reduce tensile hoop stresses.
Smooth bore for turbulence-free flow. The VAM HW ST is the ideal
connection for extra-heavy casing application.

A make-up arrestor positions the coupling accurately on the mill end.

Pin to pin torque shoulder for positive torque stop on the field end allows
overtorque and compression resistance.
Modified hook thread profile, with -9䉙reverse angle on the load flank and
+20䉙on the stabbing flank which provides superior load carrying
performances.
Increased thread taper, combined with a wider thread profile which allows
deep stabbing with no cross-threading.
Increased thread pitch to reduce make-up time.
Jump-out free.
Special thread design to offer superior thread sealing performances.
Vanishing threads, fully covered.
100% tensile effciency for all sizes with standard API Buttress OD.
Pins shoulder, thereby providing a smooth bore ID to minimize turbulence
and energy losses.
Pins shoulder, thereby providing high compression resistance and immunity
to jump-in.
