Generation of rotating magnetic field:

 In stator, three-phase winding is physically distributed in the stator core in such a manner
that winding of each phase is separated from other by 120 0 in space.
 The magnetic flux produced by the current in each phase can be represented by the
equations given below.

 Where, φR, φY and φB are the instantaneous flux of corresponding Red, Yellow and Blue
phase winding, φm amplitude of the flux wave. The flux wave in the space can be represented as
shown below.

we will first consider the point 00

The resultant of these fluxes at that instant (φr) is 1.5φm

we will consider the point 2, where ωt = π / 3 or 600
The resultant of these fluxes at that instant (φr) is 1.5φm
we will consider the point 3, where ωt = π / 2 or 900

The resultant of these fluxes at that instant (φr) is 1.5φm.

we can prove that the due to balanced supply applied to the three-phase stator winding a
rotating or revolving magnetic fields is established in thew space.

Single-phase Induction Motor:

 The single-phase induction motor in its simplest form is structurally the same as a poly-
phase induction motor having a squirrel cage rotor, the only difference is that the single phase
induction motor has single winding on the stator which produces mmf stationary in space.
 The stator winding of the single phase motor is disposed in slots around the inner periphery
of a laminated ring similar to the 3-phase motor.
 The single-phase induction motor operation can be described by two methods:

– Double revolving field theory; and

– Cross-field theory

A single phase induction motor is not self-starting. To overcome this drawback and make the
motor self-starting, it is temporarily converted into a two-phase motor during starting
period. For this purpose, the stator of a single phase motor is provided with an extra
winding, known as starting winding, in addition to the main or running winding. The two
windings are spaced 900 electrically apart and are connected in parallel across the single
phase supply.

CONSTRUCTION OF SINGLE PHASE INDUCTION MOTOR:

Single phase induction motor is very simple and robust in construction. The stator carries a
distributed winding in the slots cut around the inner periphery.

The stator conductors have low resistance and they are winding called Starting winding is
also mounted on the stator.

This winding has high resistance and its embedded deep inside the stator slots, so that they
have considerable inductance.
