Greetings.

In this video, I will be answering questions regarding about nursing theory. Which nursing theory would I
like to study further on and how would I implement this theory in a community, and what is the
contribution of a nursing theorist in the community.

Starting with the first question on which nursing theory am I interested to study upon, I would first like to
share the process of how I chose a theory and the notable theories that have piqued my interest. These
are:

 Process of choosing the theory (Pre-introduction)

Lesson 10: 14 Basic Human Needs by Virgina Henderson

Page: 87

Notes: A theory that mainly focuses on the biological, psychological, emotional needs of a patient, as well as the
nurse’s roles to provide those needs. Nursing was viewed as “doing things for patients that they would do for
themselves if they could, that is if they were physically able or had the required knowledge.” It seems that a
nurse in this viewpoint is seen as a helper or an aid for someone who needs help.

Lesson 13: Behavioral System Model by Dorothy Johnson

Page: 121

Notes: A theory that further studies the behavior system of a person. It is more of a fundamental study used to
decipher a patient’s behavior. Understanding such concept can help provide better patient care. The theorist
believed that a person has patterned, purposeful, repetitive ways of acting that comprise a behavioral system
specific to that individual. From what I understand, this theory implies that the behavioral system of an
individual can be taken into account to improve patient quality care.

Lesson 19: Philosophy and Science of Caring by Margaret Jean Watson

Page: 189

Notes: The theory cites a structure of caring, with major conceptual elements. It is a theory that tackles more
about the relationship of the nurse to the patient. The theorist viewed caring as the essence of nursing.

I find these theories’ perspective and the way of approach in Nursing unique. Certain similarities can be
seen in the cited theories. I personally believe that nursing requires more than just learning the anatomy
and physiology of the body, or the virus or bacteria that’ll infect the body. Nursing requires a more depth
connection during the process of patient care in order to ensure the quality. To answer the first question,

- QUESTIONS

1. If you will be having your research, what nursing theory you would like to study further as a student
nurse? Why? (Select a theory that is not your report)

Lesson 25: Theory of Human Becoming by Rosemarie Rizzo Parse

Honestly, preferences and self-interest played a part when I chose this theory. Based on my
previous selections as stated earlier, I am interested in the nursing perspective which indulges
further than just the biological aspect in nurse care. The Theory of Human Becoming focuses on
quality of life and human dignity from the perspective of patients, families, and communities. It
states that a man is a combination of biological, psychological, sociological, and spiritual factors. I
find this study encompassing most of the content the previous theories I have cited earlier.

The theory has three abiding themes and principles namely, meaning, rhythmicity, and
transcendence. The theme of meaning says that Human Becoming is choosing personal meaning
in situations, and that a person’s reality is given meaning through experiences he or she lives in
the environment. Rhythmicity explains that Human Becoming is cocreating rhythmical patterns of
relating with the universe, and that a person and the environment cocreate in rhythmical patterns.
Transcendence says that Human Becoming refers to reaching beyond the limits a person sets,
and that a person is constantly transforming him or herself. In terms of nursing, the Human
Becoming Theory explains that a person is more than the sum of the parts, the environment and
the person are inseparable, and that nursing is a human science and art that uses an abstract
body of knowledge to help people. The theory allows nurses to create a stronger nurse-patient
relationship because the nurse is not focused on “fixing” problems but is viewing the patient as a
whole person living experiences through his or her environment.

The Human Becoming Theory of Nursing is a model that focuses on the quality of life of the
patient and sees the patient not as different aspects of a whole, but as a person. This is different
than many other nursing theories and allows nurses to do what so many of them go into the
nursing field to help people.
It is a grand nursing theory that can be used as a framework for other studies, as it encompasses
different aspects of human science. I’m interested on how much can we explore in this field as we
relate it to nursing. Studying further on this theory suggests that understanding the deeper realm
of our innate compassion, and I believe that’s important in this profession.

2. How will you implement your chosen theory in the community? Discuss the application of the theory.

Implementing a grand theory such as the Human Becoming Theory is difficult. It is abstract so
people need to understand the concept properly and diligently to fully embody the essence of the
theory. I suggest to:

(1) Know your intentions as to why you chose to be a nurse whether it be compassion, money, or
privilege, it’s best to understand where you stand in: which leads us to
(2) Know what you are getting into: Nursing isn’t an easy profession as it requires a person to be
physically, mentally, and emotionally strong. It is a tedious profession.
(3) Knowing those both, are you willing to step out of your circle to aid someone? I personally
believe that Nursing is a humane profession, a calling for the compassionate, but also a
privilege to some.

3. What do you think will be the contribution of a NURSE THEORIST in the community?

Nurse theorists are beneficial to the community in such a way that it studies Nursing as a
profession, a duty, a calling, or different perspectives as well as its ways. It criticizes and
questions the physical, mental, emotional, and moral aspect of Nursing. This ensures that the
Nursing community is on a constant run to improvement which leads to a better healthcare
system which benefits the whole community.
