A JOB FOR CHILDREN

In Iceland, Heimaey, there is a sea bird called puffin (puffling). There are 8 to 10 million
puffins in Iceland. The puffins live in nests in the cliffs. Every day the puffins fly out to sea
(to catch fish) and return to their nests in the evening. Some birds see the lights of Heimaey
and fly to them; this is how they get lost. Every night in summer, the children of Heimaey
with their parents make puffin patrols to look for lost puffins in the pier, parking lots and in
the streets. They rescue the lost puffins because if they don't do that, cats and dogs will eat
them or they just die. They look for lost puffins, find them, put them in boxes and the next
day they take them to the beach and throw them out to sea. It is an interesting job for the
children.
