ORIGIN TASK 3

Weibull plot
The data are measured with the set-up in the image.

The dielectric material (green color) is sputtered AlN with the thickness d. Bottom and
top electrode consist in a layer stack of metal contacts. The voltage is applied between
tip 1 and 2 and the breakdown value is logged for the single test structures.
3.1) Plot the given measurement data in a Weibull plot!
3.2) Determine the β-value and the η-value!
3.3) Indicate which failure mechanism is involved (early, random, wear-out or rapid
wear out)!
3.4) Indicate the characteristic breakdown voltage!
3.5) Indicate the characteristic breakdown field, if the thickness d of the dielectric is 300
μm!
3.1)

(Plot 1)
1. Determine the β-value and the η-value.
β-value = 2.14149
η-value = 133.82181
3. Indicate which failure mechanism is involved (early, random, wear-out or rapid
wear out)
WEAR OUT FAILURE
4.Indicate the characteristic breakdown voltage!
133.82181
5. Indicate the characteristic breakdown field, if the thickness d of the dielectric is
300 µm!
Characteristic breakdown field = 133.82181/300 µm

1.Plot the given measurement data in a Weibull plot!
(Plot 2)
The graphs above show the Weibull distribution plot for the breakdown voltages
measured at the respective tips.
3.2)
β : SHAPE η – SCALE
Plot 1 2.14149 133.82181
Plot 2 0.9784 86.3026

3.3) Based on β value, the type of failure mechanism involved is identified

Value of β Failure mechanism
<1 Early failure
β=1 Random failure
4>β>1 Wear-out failure
β>4 Rapid wear-out failure

OBSERVATION FROM PLOTS:

▪ Plot A has β = 2.14149. Hence it incurs a WEAR-OUT FAILURE.
▪ Plot B has β = 0.9784. Hence it incurs an EARLY FAILURE.
3.4) Based on the assumption that, β being the shape and η being the scale, if we adjust
η value, keeping β as constant, the mean of the entire distribution is changed keeping
the shape the same. Hence, η is taken as the characteristic breakdown voltage (VBV).
For Plot 1, VBV1 = 133.82181 V and for Plot 2, VBV2 = 86.3026 V
3.5)
Characteristic breakdown field EB is provided as E = VBV/d
d = 300 µm
For Plot 1:
EB1 = 133.82181/ 300 µm
= 0.446 MV/m
EB2 = 86.3026/300 µm
= 0.28767 MV/m
EB1 = 0.446 MV/m and EB2 = 0.28767 MV/m
