ASSIGNMENT 1

Date of submission: 01-11-2021

1. Explain the role of an Industrial engineering in an industry of your
choice

An industrial engineer in a Car Manufacturing industry can perform the following roles:
 Help in designing car systems
 Helps in decision making by acting as an advisor and consultant on matters
concerning the car industry.-he can interpret data
-Review data
-Advice for improvement
 Acts as an analyst of different car systems whereby he
-Identifies system fails
-Solves the problems using information and tech
 Acts a trainer by -motivating staff in the industry
-Trains workers in different fields according to his/her
speciality, e.g Assembling car parts
-Negotiating with clients or suppliers of different materials

2. Describe the concept of product life cycle of a product of your choice.

My product of choice will be Solar powered Phones. There are five stages in the concept
of product life cycle namely, Development, Introduction, Growth , Maturity and Decline.

DEVELOPMENT PHASE

 This is the research phase, before the Solar powered phones are introduced to the
market place. Investors are brought in during this stage, prototypes of the phones
are created.
 Product effectiveness is tested and a launching strategy is created to try and create
a better plan to introduce the phones to the market.
 A lot of money will be spent without bringing any revenue because the Solar
powered phones will not be sold yet.
 The stage may last for some time , depending on the competition and other
contributing factors.

INTRODUCTION PHASE

 Firstly awareness is built about Solar powered phones and a market is created for
the phones, through :-Advertising
-Low pricing of the phones in order to penetrate the market
-Selective distribution of the solar powered phones
GROWTH PHASE
 Here the Solar Powered phones firm will try to build preference and increase
market share.Some strategies implemented are:
-Quality of the Solar Powered phones will be maintained and a few additional
features such as updating system software can be added.
-Promotion of the phones will now be aimed at a nigger audience
-Pricing of the phones may be maintained as demand increases

MATURITY PHASE
 The strong growth of the phones diminishes at this stage. This is because other
companies or competitors will start manufacturing and selling these Solar
Powered phones. The main objective now will be to try and defend market share
while maximizing profit
 Some strategies that can be used are:
-Low pricing of the phones
-Unique promotion of the phones
-Phone features such as color, design and weight may be enhanced to differentiate
them from that of competitors.

DECLINE PHASE
 As the sales of the phones decline, several options will now come up:
1.Maintain sales of the phones , possibly adding more new features and finding
new users
2.Reduce prices and continue offering the phones to some loyal customers
3.Discontinue the sale of the Solar Powered Phones or sell the business to another
firm willing to continue with the phones.

3. Critically evaluate the facilities plan of any one of the FET workshop and
list any FIVE (5) potential changes you would consider if you were asked
to replan the campus. Replan the facility plan using facilities planning
redesign concept.
Plant layout is a planning concerned with the arrangement of departments, work groups within
the departments, workstations, machines and stores within a production facility. The objective is
to ensure a smooth work flow in the plant or a particular traffic pattern. Looking at the FET
workshop, the five potential changes that I would make are:
 Reduce the spaces between the machine workshops.
 Reduce distance from the entrance to the first machine workshop
 Reduce the location from the hostels to the FET workshop
 Provision of first aid kits in every FET Workshop
 Reduce material handling costs
Classification of Plant Layout
Plant layout may be classified into four classes as given below:
1. Product or line or flow shop layout
2. Process or functional layout
3. Group or hybrid or mixed layout
4. Fixed position layout

Process Layout
The process layout is a layout in which similar machines are arranged according
to their nature
or functions of operations not on sequence of operations, for example, all lathe
machines are
arranged at one place, all the milling machines are arranged at another place and
so on. A part
being worked travels according to the established sequence of operations, from
area to area,
where the required machines are located for each operation. This type of layout is
normally used
in a service organization, for example, hospitals, where areas are dedicated to
particular types of medical care or facility

The existing layout of the machine workshop is of the process layout category whereby machines
are grouped according to function.

4. Managerial decision making in production life-cycle plays a very

important role in an organization. With the help of an example explain
the managerial decision making with respect to designing the system,
operation, and planning and control

Looking at an example under managerial decision making, of producing bread:

DESIGNING THE SYSTEM
It is a procedure followed in developing and designing a work or production of a developing and
installing a proper layout or tools suitable for bread production. It may involve many functions of
the organization and draws upon forecasting, product design, jigs and tool design, machine
selection and estimating to enable the proper design to be made.
PLANNING
In this stage, a decision of where and when the bread(product) will be made is made. It includes
the sequencing of OPERATIONS, routing and the time schedule for manufacturing. It also states
procedures for material planning and supplies, machine loading and deliveries. To perform the
functions properly ,it will need past records of performance and to control statistic which may be
obtained from Designing the system, cost control or progress.
CONTROL
Determines whether resources to execute the plan of producing bread have been provided and if
not, takes action to correct the deficiency. This refers to the stage of ensuring that the planned
action is intactly carried out.Control initiates the plan at the right time using dispatching and
there after control takes appropriate adjustments through progressing to take of any unforeseen
circumstances that might arise. It includes the measurement of actual results, comparison of the
same with the planned action and feeding back information the planning stage to make any
adjustments required. The pattern of control is seen in material control, machine utilization, labor
control, cost control and quality control.
