Kathputli or wooden puppets
are a common and popular
form of entertainment in the
villages of Rajasthan. The
puppeteer is the storyteller
who unwinds a folk tale or an
episode from the Hindu epics
–the Ramayana or the
Mahabharata –along with the
deft interplay of various
puppets , each signifying a
character in the tale.
Cane and
bamboo craft of
Assam
Bamboo and cane craft of assam is specifically a
household craft industry in the state and offers
farmers with a part-time employment option. Various
products such as bamboo houses, bamboo baskets,
bamboo mats, bamboo hats, handicrafts like toys and
dolls, musical instruments etc. are crafted here out of
the bamboo or cane. The bamboo houses are a
combination of bamboo matting and wooden
framework.
Bamboo baskets of assam come in various shapes
and sizes and serve various distinct purposes. Also,
the baskets differ from one tribe to another in their
shape and style. For instance, if the basket has a
conical shape it is specifically a carrying basket. If the
basket has a square shape it is specifically a storage
basket. The bamboo hat or jhapi is one of the most
popular and ancient bamboo products of assam.
Colorful motifs and designs adorn these jhapis. Many
household items too such as chalani, kula, dukula,
khoralu, dhol and doon are also crafted out of
bamboo in assam.

Udaipur, Jaipur, Bharatpur and
jodhpur. One can find numerous
samples of this kind of art –form in
the form of cute delicate ivory figures
of hindu gods and goddesses with
very minute carving on the top of all
this , jail-work of lace like intricacy is
the testimony to the brilliance of
ivory carvers.

Rajasthani painting, evolved and
flourished in the royal courts of
Rajputana in northern India , mainly
during the 17th and 18th centuries.
Artists trained in the tradition of the
Mughal miniature were dispersed
from the imperial Mughal court , and
developed styles also drawing from
local traditions of painting , especially
those illustrating the hindu religious
epics , the Mahabharata and
Ramanya .

Dhurries
Floor coverings like Carpets, hand woven
durries are export all over the world. The
Durrie woven in Jaipur and also in the
rural areas. They are available in all sizes.
Camel’s hair also used in Bikaner and
Jaisalmer to wove woolen durries. These
are very famous. Interestingly Bikaner is
famous for Jail Carpets, which made by
the prisoners in the medieval period, still
the name is following to call them.
Rajasthani hand knotted carpets have
geometric motifs and formal designs with
a border and central motif. The motifs
have been localized and include
peacocks and other local icons.
Japi In Assam
Japi is a trademark of the
handicrafts built in Assam. It
features a hat which bears the
structural and designer properties
of the traditional belongings of
Assam. It is composed of closely
knit cane staff bundled together
with clusters or “japs” of the leaves
of the “tokou”- a palm tree. It is
mainly used as a decoration for the
head to act as a protection for head
and hair, and also as ceremonial or
cultural attire.
