The Task
Identify a mobile messaging platform and consider the following scenario

A conference call (video and audio) with at least 10 people collaborating and
cooperating with each other members through files, location and messages. Identify at
three challenges in this scenario and take reference of the structure of micro
interactions and redesign them.

The Goal
The goal is to identify three challenges in the above mentioned scenario and concieve
design interventions in each of the scenario. The concepts will be explained using the
James Garret Model from abstract level to specific level details.

The Messaging App Choice

Whatsapp

About Whatsapp
Whatsapp is an instant messaging and VoIP service. It allows users to send text
messages and voice messages, make voice and video calls, and share images,
documents, user locations and other content. It is one of the primary means of
internet communication in various parts of the world.

Identifying Challenges in a group context

Since the entire task is time constrained, all the challenges that are identified are
based on personal experience in using the platform in the same scenario. Since no
other users are taken into consideration here, please take these findings with
consideration.

Challenge 1: Keeping the platform clutter free

Challenge 2: Accessing information relevant to you

Challenge 3: Storage of shared files

Each of these challenges will be explored and solved seperately using the Jesse Garret
model to evaluate the interactions.

Strategy Scope Structure Skeleton Surface

Strategy: Defining the problem and proposing a solution

Challenge 1: Keeping the platform clutter free

Since there are multiple participants in the group, the amount of messages and data
influx within the group will be considerably high. At the same time not all messages
are relevant to everybody. They can be relevant to just one individual or to a sub
group within the group. This tends to increase the cluttering and disorganizes the
entire platform

The solution that can be suggested to this challenge is “Temporary Subgrouping”.

Challenge 2: Accessing information relevant to you

When you are away from the platform, if information relevant to you is shared by the
other users of the platform, they use the “Tag” function to tag you to that specific
message. But to look at those tagged message one has to go through all messages
entirely and only notifications are currently bifuracated to tagged and non tagged.

The solution that can be suggested to this challenge is “Tagged Inbox”.

Challenge 3: Storage of shared files

When files are shared in the group, they can be tagged to make it go to a specific
person or group of people, but the file shared in itself will get lost into the
conversation and only its file type will be available to the users to search through to
find that specific file.

The solution that can be suggested to this challenge is “Foldering Files”.

Scope: Exploring the solution and defining the constraints

Challenge 1 solution: Temporary subgrouping:

The entire group can now be broken down into multiple smaller groups with seperate
naming so that information only specific to that group of individuals can be sent
directly only to them and not to the entire team.

Analysing the requirements

Solve cluttering of messages: By moving respective messages to respective
subgroups it makes it easier for the relevant people to access the messages to that
Identification of the subgroups: The subgroups can be named seperately so that
they can be accessed and used.

Challenge 2 solution: Tagged inbox:

Tagged inbox will be dedicated inbox that can be accessed when the user wants to
view all the messages to which they were tagged to without having to look at other
messages.

Analysing the requirements

Viewing messages relevant to you: All the messages that were tagged to you can
be accessed on one place
Accessing that specific time: When clicking on the message, you can go to that
specific message in the conversation and then view the continuing conversation.

Challenge 3 solution: Foldering Files:

Files that have been sent in the group can be put into seperate folders and labelled for
easy access in the future.

Analysing the requirements

Finding past files: Labelling the files into specific folders will help organize the
high volume of files being shared and can make it easy to find in the future.

Structure: Defining how the interaction will work

Challenge 1 solution: Major interactions

Create Subgroup: Users will be able to create subgroups out of the available
members in the subgroup tag. They can also press and hold nametags to activate a
dropdown to add them to a subgroup
Delete subgroup: When inside the subgroup, they can delete it by going to the
menu similar to that of the regular group delete. They can also delete it using the
subgroup menu.

Challenge 2 solution: Major interactions

View Tagged messages: User will be able to access the tagged messages inbox
using an option given through the menu button
Going to a specific tagged message time: Clicking on the message in the tagged
inbox will prompt the user to ask to move to that point in the conversation.

Challenge 3 solution: Major interactions

Add to folder: Pressing and holding a sent file will give user the option to add to a
folder. The add to folder dialog box will also contain the create folder option
Create folder: While inside the folders tab, or while sending a file in the group,
users can use the create folder button to create new folders.
