Learning Task 7.

3: Digging the Circumstances

Direction: Answer the given questions below based on your understanding of the
text, be sure to explain each item and write in complete sentences. Write your
answer in a sheet of paper.

1. What is Johnsy’s illness? Johnsy was suffering from pneumonia. The

doctor said that she seemed to have made up her mind that she was not
going to get well. Medicines would not be able to cure her. She could only
be cured by her willingness to live.
2. What is the cause of her illness? The cause of Johnsy's illness is caused
by the epidemic of pneumonia in Greenwich Village in New York.
Pneumonia is a lung diseased.
3. What do you think made Johnsy consider that her possible death would be
simultaneous when the last leaf fall? What is its connection to her illness?
Johnsy was a pessimist by nature. She was dying of pneumonia at the
time, and she saw a vine outside her window while at the care home. Every
day, the vine lost its leaves, and Johnsy compares her life to that of the
vine. She kept thinking that as she became weaker by the day, she would
most likely die when the vine's last leaf fell.
4. What helps Johnsy recover from her illness? Do you think it is
psychological in nature? Why? The final leaf aids Johnsy's recovery from
her sickness. This final leaf, which she had assumed would kill her, was the
catalyst for her recovery and survival.
5. To whom does Johnsy’s analogy of the death of the vine happen? Is it
really connected to how people endure life and face the most difficult
challenge of one’s surpassing death? Explain. Johnsy had put her trust in
the plant's last leaf outside her bedroom. She want to die when that plant's
final leaf falls down, but it was Mr Behrman who died of pneumonia.
6. How does Mr. Behrman emphasize the connection of Johnsy’s faith to be
healed with the vine’s ability to hold the leaf (based on Johnsy’s point of
view)? Mr. Behrman thought that Johnsy's trust in the vine's capacity to
hang on to the leaf to heal him was very shaky. On the night of the storm,
to reinforce Johnsy's confidence, he painted the same leaf and tied it to the
vine so it wouldn't fall.

Johnsy vs. Vine

Explanation:
The vine and Johnsy have a lot in common in that they are
both on the point of dying and facing the most difficult
battles they will ever face in their lives. While Johnsy is
battling pneumonia, the vine is battling the fury of a storm
that may claim its life. However, because of the last leaf,
both are saved in a tough circumstance. A Day in the
