CHAPTER ONE

Students' Industrial Work Experience

Scheme.

The Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme was established by the

INDUSTRIAL TRAINING FUND(ITF) in 1973 to solve the problem of employability of

Nigerian graduates in the industry by establishing a preparatory program for the

undergraduates to gain practical experience via a short period of industrial attachment.

This scheme was established and signed into law as a prerequisite to the award of a

Bachelor's Degree in relevant fields including Engineering, Technology and

Environmental development.

The scheme provides a source of industrial exposure for the students to gain

practical experience over a short period to prepare them for employment in the

industry. The scheme is in 2 2 different phases of 3 months and 6 months, which the

students partake during their long break in the 3rd year and during the entire duration of

their 4th year second semester. The above regimen Is for the university undergraduates,

the other tertiary institutions have a different time frame which sometimes extends

up

to one year. The students also receive a stipend from the ITF while some companies

also do pay the students. I got a placement at the company after one month of the

program's official commencement at my school, some of the companies organized tests

and exams for the interested students before shortlisting lucky candidates for the

internship placement positions as there were limited spaces at many of the companies

The program is compulsory and highly beneficial as it truly has improved the quality of
