Some of the Philippine Theatrical Forms

Music has been an integral part of theater in the Western world as far back as the tragedies and
comedies of ancient Greece. Music can reveal the inner emotional life of a character, tragedy, love and
life struggles on the action onstage. In the Philippines, komedya, zarzuela and bodabil are the well-
known musical theaters.
Komedya is a theatrical Philippine tradition sometimes in the form of singing. It describes
conflicts between Christians and Muslims. It was used by the Spanish to promote Christianity in the
Philippines. There are 2 types of Komedya; the secular and religious. Religious komedya is also called
Komedya de anto centers on the life of Christ or of any saint. It usually seen during church celebrations.

The actors move in a stylized way, have extravagant costumes and elaborately choreographed
war scenes. While, secular komedya is performed in local fiestas. Example of this komedya is the
Santacruzan. The story evolves on the search for the Holy Cross by Queen Elena and her son,
Emperor Constantino.

Zarzuela is a Spanish-derived musical theatre in which the dramatic action is carried through an
alternating combination of song and speech. Most zarzuelas incorporate operatic and popular songs,
vocal ensemble numbers (such as trios and duets), lyrical solo songs known as romance,
various types of local folk music, and dance.
Bodabil is another theatrical form that became famous during the Japanese
occupation because the Western movies were banned in the country. But this was
first introduced by the American regime. The Filipinos were thus entertained by
this stage show, that features various forms like; musical, comedy, and even
magic acts, skits, monologues, and acrobatics, among others. This theater play
made jazz and blues popular in the country. This type of music was later on
indigenized by Filipino performers, one of whom was Luis Borromeo, a Cebuano
also known as Borromeo Lou. He had returned from America and Canada and
introduced “Classic-Jazz Music” in the country. It is said that he coined the term
vod-a-vil, later known as bodabil.

Fundamental and Locomotors Skills in Dance

PHILIPPINE FESTIVAL DANCE: FUNDAMENTAL AND LOCOMOTORS SKILLS

I. OBJECTIVES
✓ To identify what is fundamental skill
✓ To classify what are the locomotors skills
✓ To execute the right fundamental and locomotors skills needed for a festival
dance

II. ACTIVITY

In PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, bodily movement is produced by skeletal muscles. It requires energy

expenditure and produce progressive health benefits. Exercise is a type of physical activity that
requires planned, structured, and repetitive movement to improve or maintain physical fitness.
Physical activity heavily requires fundamental and locomotives skill whatever type of exercise
you have chosen to do.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES can be in different forms including dancing like Festival Dance. Its
original intention is to celebrate and showcase culture, tradition or religious belief but it requires
fundamental skills in order to perform it properly.

WHAT DOES FUNDAMENTAL SKILL MEAN?

American Pyschological Association (APA,n.d) described FUNDAMENTAL SKILL as the

ability that necessary in order to perform a task or understand an idea because it is a
foundation for other skills or ideas.

Fundamental skills are practical and sometimes considered as basic or simple but strictly
functional.

WHAT IS FUNDAMENTAL MOVEMENT SKILLS?

Fundamental movement skills are a specific set of skills that involve different body parts
such as feet, legs, trunk, head, arms and hands.
Fundamental movement skills are essential as it is the basis to all physical activities we
do in sports, gymnastics, physical recreational activities, and most importantly in dancing.
There are 3 components of body movement skills: Locomotor, Non-Locomotor and
Manipulative skills.

WHAT IS LOCOMOTOR SKILLS?

Locomotor comes from the Latin word locō (literally “from a place”) or locus (“place”) and
motionem or movēre (“motion, a moving”). It is the movement that allows us to move from
one point in space to another. The locomotor skills involves STEP, WALK, RUN, LEAP,
AND JUMP.

Checked (✓) mostly 20 counts of locomotors skills = averagely skilled
Checked (✓) mostly 30 counts or more of locomotors skills = highly skilled

IV. GENERALIZATION

Physical Fitness is an integral part of a festival dance. A beautiful

performance is always attributed to the level of preparation and the quality of
execution. In order to achieve any kind of dance, complete understanding of body
movement is essential. The mastery of fundamental skills and locomotors skill
(STEP, WALK, RUN, LEAP, and JUMP) are gateways to perform a much complex
set of skills and movement in whole choreography of any dance.

V. EVALUATION

Questions to Ponder….

1. How do you feel after performing the locomotors skill exercises?

I feel a little bit tired after performing the skill exercises at the same time enjoyed as I get to finish it
between 20 and 30 counts or more.

2. Do you have a hard time executing the different locomotors skills? Why or why not?

I would say that the first part of the activity was easy to perform while the latter part was a little bit
difficult to execute especially those locomotor exercises which only uses one foot.

3. Do you think that fundamental and locomotors skills are truly important after doing the
exercise in terms of dancing? Why or why not?

Yes, because these locomotor skills will serve as a foundation for our body movement and will also help us
improve our coordination.

NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

A. OBJECTIVES:1. Explains non-communicable diseases based on cause and effect, signs and
symptoms, risks factors and protective factors and possible complications

B.INTRODUCTION/LESSON PROPER:

A noncommunicable disease is a noninfectious health condition that cannot be spread from person to
person. It also lasts for a long period of time. This is also known as a chronic disease. Non-
communicable diseases are not caused by pathogens or disease-causing organisms such as bacteria
or viruses, but rather, by how people live, by the condition which they are born or by the hazards around
them. It also includes diseases caused by breakdown of the body tissues (degenerative diseases), poor
diet, environmental and occupational hazards, stress and tension.

Here are some of the Common Non-Communicable Diseases

A.Cancer
It is caused by abnormal cells growing without control. As these abnormal cells grow, they form in
masses called “tumors”. Tumor can either be:
1. Benign- masses of the cells that are not cancerous and do not spread.
2. Malignant-masses of cells that are cancerous. They spread to other parts of the body by moving
along the blood vessels or through the lymph system. This spreading is called “metastasis”.
Warning Signs of cancer; Remember the word CAUTION-UP!

C -hange in bowel or bladder habits U- nexplained weight loss

A -sore that does not heal P–ersistent hoarseness
U -nusual bleeding or discharge
T -hickening or lump in breast or elsewhere
I -ndigestion or difficulty in swallowing
O -bvious change in warts or moles
N – aging cough or hoarseness

B.Diabetes

It is a disease that prevents the body from converting food into energy. Carbohydrates are
normally changes into a simple sugar called glucose (a source of energy). Insulin, the hormone
produced in the pancreas, regulates the level of glucose in the blood.
Type I Diabetes is the result of little or no insulin produced by the pancreas. This can be due to a
defective immune system which attacks the cells that produce insulin. This type of diabetes usually
begins before the age of 40.
Type II Diabetes is the result of too little insulin produced by the pancreas or the failure of the insulin
to function normally. Most often it usually begins in overweight adults.
Sign and Symptoms of diabetes:
EXCESSIVE: Urination(polyuria)
Thirst(polydipsia)
Hunger(polyphagia)

Arthritis
It refers to the inflammation of the joints. It usually occurs during old age.

1. Rheumatoid arthritis causes pain and swelling in many joints throughout the body.
It is an autoimmune disease which happens when the body’s immune system attacks healthy cells by
mistake. This will lead to deformity and crippling.
2. Osteoarthritis is a disease of older people. It results from wear and tear of joints, especially those of
hands,hips,knees and spine.

Kidney or Renal Failure

It is a medical condition in which the kidney fail to adequately filter waste products from the blood.
In renal failure, there may be problems with increased fluid in the body (leading to swelling),
increased acid, raised level of potassium, decreased levels of calcium, increased level of phosphate
and in later stages anemia. Bone health may also be affected. Long term kidney problems are
associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.

C.GENERALIZATION
Non-communicable disease is not caused by pathogens but rather by how people live by conditions
with which they are born or by hazards around them. They can be prevented and controlled by physical
activities or regular exercise, healthy eating, not smoking, weight management, routine medical check-
up and stress management. After practicing all of these things, we can now influence and tell our family
and friends about this in order to achieve, sustain and promote personal health and wellness. As the
old saying goes “Prevention is better than cure”.
