Quarter 2 – Module 7
Multimodal Text

SDO TAGUIG CITY AND PATEROS

Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and evaluated by the

Development and Quality Assurance Teams of SDO TAPAT to assist you in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

The following are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the
module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer Let’s Try before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.

If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are
not alone.

We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning and
gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!
Let’s Learn

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master
the Multimodal Text. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different
learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of
students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course.
But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the
textbook you are now using.

The module is divided into three lessons, namely:

● Lesson 1 – The Modes of Multimodal Text
● Lesson 2 – The Types of Multimodal Text
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. Determine the importance of multimodal text;
2. Name the elements of multimodality;
3. Apply multimodality in constructing text;
4. Name the different types of multimodal text;
5. Identify the type of multimodal text used; and
6. Use the types of multimodal in constructing text.

Lesson

1 Multimodal Text
Text composition deals specifically with how text is entered and arranged on a
printed page or a page designed to be viewed or read. It involves entering the text,
manipulating its placement, and altering its visual appearance.

Let’s Recall

Multimodal Texts are texts which incorporate elements of audio, visual and/or
animations along with written language (words, sentences in a variety of segments
and formats); for example, a poster conveys meaning through a combination of
written language, still image, and spatial design.

People need to be able to communicate effectively in an increasingly

multimodal world. This requires how to comprehend and compose meaning
across diverse, rich, and potentially complex, forms of multimodal text, and
to do so using a range of different meaning modes. As communication
practices have become increasingly shaped by developments in information
and multimedia technologies, it is no longer possible for us to think about
literacy solely as a linguistic accomplishment (Jewitt, 2008, p. 241).
Multimodal is the combination of two or more of these modes to create
meaning. Most of the texts that we use are multimodal, including picture
books, text books, graphic novels, films, e-posters, web pages, and oral
storytelling as they require different modes to be used to make meaning.

Let’s Elaborate

Multimodal Elements

Linguistic The text is conveyed through written language in which choices of words,
phrases, and sentences are organized through linguistic grammar.

Visual The text is illustrated using visual resources and includes both still image
and moving images. Images may include diverse cultural connotations, symbolism
and portray different people, cultures and practices.
Gestural The text is demonstrated by way of body movement; facial expression, eye
movementsand gaze, demeanor, gait, dance, acting and action sequences.

Spatial The text is shown by means of design of spaces, using choices of spatial
resources including: scale, proximity, boundaries, direction, layout, and organization
of objects in the space.

Audio The text is presented over sound, including choices of music representing
different cultures, ambient sounds, noises, alerts, silence, natural/unnatural
sounds, and use of volume, beat, tempo, pitch, and rhythm. Lyrics in a song may
also include multiple languages.

2 Types of Multimodal Text

A multimodal text conveys meaning through a combination of two or more modes,
Each mode has its own specific task and function in the meaning making process,
and usually carries only a part of the message in a multimodal text. In a picture
book, the print and the image both contribute to the overall telling of the story but
