Q1. Describe clearly, and in your own words, how a single phase induction motor
work?
You may use diagrams/sketches to help explain your answer.
• Single-phase Induction motor consist of squirrel cage rotor, single-
phase supplied main windings, and auxiliary windings (In stator) for
starting purposes.
• Impedance is connected in series to auxiliary windings to make a
phase shift between currents passing through these windings, essential
to create a rotating magnetic field.
• When single phase AC source is applied to the stator windings, due to
the phase shift of the currents passing through them (Main windings
and auxiliary windings), rotating magnetic field is produced which
causes the motor (rotor) to rotate as in three-phase induction motor.
• When the rotor is rotating, we can cut- off the auxiliary windings and
the motor will still work.
Q2.The starting winding current of a capacitor start motor is 4A, and leads the
supply voltage by 10º.The main winding current is 5A and lags the supply voltage
by 50º. Determine:
a). the current drawn from the line at the instant of the motor start
b). the angle of the resultant motor starting current Show all calculations,
c) and draw the phasor diagram showing the reference voltage and the three
currents.
