LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

3RD Quarter – Week 4

NAME: ______________________________ SECTION: ____________________

TOPIC: Waves: Carriers of Energy

LEARNING COMPETENCY: Understand waves and its properties.
After finishing this module, the student should be able to:
1. define sound;
2. determine how sound travel in different medium;
3. create musical instrument and harmonious music out of indigenous materials.

Concepts:
Sound is a form of energy. It is produced when air molecules vibrate and move in pattern known as waves or
sound waves. Sound waves are examples of longitudinal waves. They are also known as mechanical waves since sound
waves need medium in order to propagate. They are also called compression waves which the existence depends on
the transfer of energy.
SOUND just like other waves do have characteristics such as FREQUENCY, WAVELENGTH, AMPLITUDE, and
SPEED. Other properties are loudness and pitch. PITCH is dependent on the frequency of sound wave. The higher
frequency the higher the pitch of the sound produced.
Organisms like us are capable of sensing sound through our EARS. Just like other organism, our ears do have
parts that perform special tasks until the auditory signals reach and are interpreted by our brain. Frequencies beyond
the audible to human are known as ULTRASONIC (beyond the upper limit) and INFRASONIC (below the lower limit).
INTENSITY and LOUDNESS are quantitative and qualitative descriptions of the energy carried by the wave. HIGH
AMPLITUDE waves are intense and are sensed as loud sound. LOW AMPLITUDE sound waves are soft sound. MUSIC is
a special sound that forms patterns and are appealing to our sense of hearing.
TONE refers to the sound quality. Sound quality depends on the combination of different frequencies of sound
waves. It is tone of a vibrating medium that distinguishes it from another source.

You come to know that someone is at your door when he knocks or you hear the
sound of the doorbell.
Directions: Inside the box of column A are some objects or anything that produces sound. Write the name of the object
in column B. Give the source of sound from the pictures in column A, write it in column C.

Did you know that…

Humans use sound waves in communicating with each other. The production of sound/human voice
is attributed into three parts.

1. the lungs that produce sufficient airflow and air pressure;

2. the vocal folds, within the larynx that are responsible for producing the sound; and
3. the articulators (parts of vocal tract such as tongue, palate, lips)
Directions: Complete the
statements to express what you have learned from
the lesson. Choose the answers from the box.

to come up with the correct answers. Write your
answer on the space provided after the
unscrambled letters.

Note: Do not forget to submit your

Guitar! this will be the basis of your score in
Performance Task. Thank You!!

Directions:
A. Create your own improvised guitar using indigenous materials
found in your place.
B. Use rubber bands as your strings.
C. Share the picture of your created instrument and POST in your Facebook
wall and tag it to your science teacher.
