Unprotected road users: Cyclists in Toronto

Summer is that time of the year when people living in Toronto uses bikes to go
around to enjoy the weather. The only downside is the lack of proper lanes for the
cyclists in the city which puts their lives in danger.

Scarborough, the place where I live, is a car-centric suburban area. There isn’t any
roads or lanes near my house which have a cycle lane. Many of the streets only
have a footpath and that too on one side of the road. The crowded footpaths in the
evening leaves no space for the cyclists to pass through, and they are compelled to
drive through the roads. These streets are often dangerous for the pedestrians,
cyclists and even for the car drivers. In this area, a very excessive number
pedestrians and cyclists were hit by cars and killed in the past year. Still there
haven’t any development to the existing infrastructure or any new additions to it. The
city seems to not notice this and are failing to take accountability for the lives that are
lost due to these accidents (Mok, 2019). The issues faced by the cyclists in the
Toronto city shouldn’t be left unseen. There are some streets in Toronto that are
protected but it’s not enough.

To conclude, we can say that the issue of not having cycle lanes are not at all small
as it seems. Many lives were lost due to the unprotected lanes and lack of it too. The
city must handle this issue with a huge sense of urgency and take necessary actions
to reduce the panic of cyclists.

Mok, Tanya. (2019, April 23). This is why Toronto Doesn’t have Enough Bike Lanes.

In the blog “This is why Toronto doesn’t have enough bike lanes”, the author have
described how the unprotected lanes are affecting the cyclists and what is the
constraint of building new cycle lanes in the city. The City have introduced a 10 year
cycling infrastructure plan which involves adding a large number of lanes throughout
the city. The plan is slow moving with the implementation only in a very few streets.
The suburban areas are facing a big issue with the growing number of accidents due
to the lack of cycle lanes. According to the author, the city is hesitating to implement
the plan despite the urgency because of the impact it will have on the drivers, as the
space for on street parking decreases and the motor vehicle lanes will be reduced
too.

The source is relevant to the issue as it clearly mentions on how the various areas of
Toronto are affected greatly by having unprotected lanes which endangers the lives
of the cyclists. It mentions how large the death rates were due to this problem. The
article also mentions how the lack of the lanes affects the residential and community
areas, where no specific lanes are allotted for cyclists and even for the pedestrians,
like Scarborough. It’s the city where I live and it’s an issue we face in our day-to-day
lives.
