EN9RC-IIa3.2.7: COMPARE AND CONTRAST SIMILAR INFORMATION PRESENTED IN DIFFERENT

TEXTS

and differences of two or more things are explored.

Comparison discusses the similarities of things / ideas explored;

Contrast discusses the differences between the things / ideas explored.

Example: Apples and oranges are both fruits, which means that they have seeds inside of them.
Each has a skin, but orange skins are thick and easy to peel. Apple skins are thinner and do not
peel easily. Oranges also contain more acid than apples, but both fruits are delicious.

We Wear the Mask

By: Paul Laurence Dunbar

We wear the mask that grins and lies,

It hides our cheeks and shades our
eyes –
This debt we pay to human guile
With thorn and bleeding hearts we smile,
And mouth with myriad subtleties.

Why should the world be overwise,

In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while
We wear the mask.

We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries

To thee from tortured souls arise.
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
But let the world dream otherwise,
We wear the mask!

VARIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES IN LIFE.

EXAMINING THE LITERATURE AS MEANS OF VALUING OTHER PEOPLE AND OTHER VARIOUS
CIRCUMSTANCES IN LIFE.

Change is inevitable. The diversity and disparity in culture, beliefs and ethnicity create
volatile (rapid change especially for the worse), uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world. This
change manifests in different aspects such as behavior, views, environment, education, health,
literature, and others. However, even in drastic changes, there are unwritten values that remain
constant- for instance, determination, love, selflessness, and the like.

Hence, on this lesson, we will look and understand those unchanging values in a
changing world using literature.

EN9LT-Iva-17: ANALYZE LITERLATURE AS MEANS OF UNDERSTANDING UNCHANGING VALUES

IN THE VUCA (VOLATILE, UNCERTAIN, COMPLEX, AMBIGOUS) WORLD.

UNDERSTANDING UNCHANING VALUES IN THE WORLD THROUGH LITERATURE

When we study literature, our perspectives become broader. We become more

understandable of the situation of other people and we learn to be open-minded on the
situations and circumstances present in front of us. Hence, on this lesson, we will examine the
literature as means of valuing other people and other various circumstances in life.

Let us do this!
A. Read the story below.

The Emperor’s New Clothes By: Hans Christian Anderson

Once, there was an Emperor who loved fine clothes. He did not care for hunting. He did
not care for plays or opera. He was no lover of gourmet food or wine. His only ambition was
always to be well-dressed. He had a different coat for every hour of the day. He loved to walk
about and show off his fancy outfits.

One day, two strangers arrived in town. They were swindlers, but they said they were
master weavers from a faraway land. They claimed that the clothing they make is the finest with
beautiful, intricate patterns. The swindlers said that this clothing is also magical and would
appear invisible to anyone who was stupid or incompetent.

The Emperor is excited about this amazing product, and he paid the men a huge sum to
make these magnificent clothes. The swindlers then pretended to weave and sew the clothing
with empty looms and needles without thread. The Emperor sent men to check on the swindler's
work. When each man realized he saw nothing, he did not want to admit it for fear he would be
accused of being stupid and incompetent. So, each man lied to the Emperor, saying how the
clothing was magnificent.

The clothing was brought to the Emperor on the day of the great procession. The Emperor
saw nothing, but he, too, did not want to admit to being stupid or incompetent, so he agreed

that the clothing was exquisite. After being dressed in the invisible garments, the Emperor
marched in the procession in front of his entire kingdom. Everyone in the kingdom saw the
emperor without clothes, but for fear of being accused of being stupid or incompetent, they all
sang false praises of their Emperor's fine clothing.

Finally, a child said, ''But he doesn't have anything on!'' A hush fell over the crowd. For a
few seconds, nobody said anything. Then everyone began to whisper, “The child is right. The
emperor isn’t wearing a thing!” Then people began to giggle and laugh as they cried out, “He
hasn’t got anything on!”

Match it!

with the situations in the story in Column A.
