3. A millammeter has an internal resistance of 20 Ω and gives a full-scale deflection when the
current flowing through is 0.75 mA. Determine
(a) the value of a shunt resistance so that its range may be extended to measure currents up
to 100 mA.
(b) the value of a series resistance to convert the instrument into a voltmeter measuring up
to 200 V.
4. In the circuit shown in figure 3, determine the value of 𝑅1 and 𝑅2 so that 𝐼2 = 𝐼1 /𝑛 and
the imput resistance looking in at AB is 𝑅 Ω. Hence design a T-network so that when it is
inserted between a generator of 50 Ω internal resistance and a load of 50 Ω it attenuates the
power to one twenty-fifth of the value of obtained when the generator and the load are
connected directly.

6. Show that the voltage measured by the voltmeter (which is assumed to take negligible
current) in the bridge circuit of figure 5 is given by
𝑅2 𝑅3 − 𝑅1 𝑅4
𝑉𝐷 = [ ]𝑉
(𝑅2 + 𝑅3 )(𝑅1 + 𝑅4 )

resistance varies with temperature 𝑇°𝐾 as 𝑅0 [1 + 𝛼(𝑇 − 273.2)] and calculate the
temperature of this element when 𝑉𝐷 = 0, 125 mV, 500 mV; given that 𝛼 = 0.005𝐾 −1 and

flux of 0.1 × 10−2 Wb in the airgap, given that the leakage factor is 1.3, and that the
relative permeability of the iron under the new conditions is 300.

cross-sectional area of 800 mm2 and each of the side limbs has a cross-sectional area of
500 mm2 . Calculate the m.m.f. required to produce a flux of 1 mWb in the centre limb,
