1. a. What are the differences between active and passive component? Give 3
examples of passive component?

b. The effective resistance of two resistors connected in parallel is 16 Ω. The


resistance of one of the other resistors is 24 Ω. Calculate the other resistor
resistance and the effective resistance of the two resistors connected in series.

c. A 40 Ω resistor is connected in series with a coil of inductance 0.08 H. The


combined circuit is connected to a 240V, 50 Hz supply. Calculate
i) the reactance of the coil
ii) the impedance of the circuit
iii) the current of the circuit.

d. By using Norton’s Law, calculate current AB in Figure 1.

b. A 15 F capacitor is connected in series with two capacitors, 4 F and 6 F


respectively, which are connected in parallel. Determine:
i. the capacitance of the combination
ii. the charge on the 15 F capacitor if a p.d of 25 V is maintained
across the combination.

c. A resistor and a capacitor are connected in series across a 150 V a.c supply. When
the frequency is 40 Hz the current is 5 A, and when the frequency is 50 Hz the
current is 6 A. Find the resistance and capacitance of the resistor respectively.

5. a. Define the inverters. Give the primary function of inverters.

b. In a three-phase four-wire balanced load system, the phase resistance is 100 Ω


and non-inductive loads of 10 kW, 8 kW, and 5 kW are connected between the
three line conductors and the neutral as in Figure 1. Calculate the line current for:

c. A large electromagnet is wound with 1500 turns. A current of 2 A in this winding


produces a flux through the coil of 0.06 Wb. Calculate the inductance of the
electromagnet. If the current in the coil is reduced from 2A to zero in 0.1s, what
average e.m.f. will be induced in the coil? Assume that there is no residual flux.

d. A three-phase motor operating off a 415 V system is developing 40 kW at


efficiency of 0.89 p.u. and a power factor of 0.9. Calculate
i. the line current
ii. the phase current if the winding are delta-connected.

1. Give 3 basic rules that apply to electricity (characteristic of current).

2. A 0-300V dc meter has a resistance of 300 kΩ. What is the current through the
instrument when it is connected across a 240 V d.c line?

3. An electroplating plant has bus-bars which carry up to 1000 A at 6 V d. The


surroundings are very wet with water and electrolyte. Should the bus-bars to be
insulated and if so, why?

4. A balanced three phase load with 450Ω per phase in wye (Y) connection is connected
to a 415V (Y) secondary winding transformer. What is the voltage across each load?

5. Can an ac circuit containing only resistance, be considered as having impedance?


Explain.
