DESIGN OF DISTRIBUTORY HEAD REGULATOR

NAME OF PROJECT : CROSS REGULATOR AT RD 57.460

DESIGN DATA :

1 Full supply discharge of distributory 20.00 Cumec

2 Full supply level of distributory 249.85 m

3 Bed level of distributory 246.65 m

4 Bed width of distributory 5.00 m

5 Average bed level of parent channel 246.95 m

6 F.S.L. of parent channel 250.15 m

7 Safe exit gradient for canal bed material 1/4

8 Lacey's silt factor 1

(1) FIXATION OF CREST LEVEL AND WATERWAY :

Generally the crest level of the distributory head regulator is kept 0.3 to 0.6 m higher than
its upstream floor level
Adopt crest level of the regulator = 246.95 + 0.5
= 247.45
Head regulators are generally provided with a very wide and shallow waterway. The drowned weir
formula is therefore, used for calculating the discharge.

Q = 2/3 C1 L Ö2g X h3/2 + C2 L d Ö2gh --------(1)

Where, C1 = 0.577 , C2 = 0.80

L = Clear length of waterway
h = Difference of u/s & d/s water levels
= 250.15 - 249.85
= 0.30 m
d = Depth of d/s water level above the crest
= 249.85 - 247.45
= 2.40 m
Substituting the above values in equation (1),
20.00 = 0.2800 X L + 4.6581 X L
:. L = 4.05 m
Minimum clear waterway = 60 % of bed width of offtaking canal
= 3.00 m
Thus clear waterway required = 4.05 m
Provide 2 bays of 3.75 m each giving a clear waterway of 7.50 m

(2) LEVEL AND LENGTH OF DOWNSTREAM FLOOR

The discharge and length of waterway is given by,

Q= 20.00 Cumec, l = 7.50 m

20.00
Discharge intensity q = --------- = 2.67 cumec/m
7.5
Head loss = u.s. F.S.L. - d.s. F.S.L.
= 250.15 - 249.85
= 0.30 m

for, q = 2.67 cumec/m and HL = 0.30 m

D/s specific energy Ef2 (from Blench curves) = 1.63 m
Cistern floor level required = D/s F.S.L. - Ef2
= 249.85 - 1.63
= 248.22 m

U/s specific energy , Ef1 = Ef2 + HL

= 1.63 + 0.30
= 1.93 m
from energy of flow curves
Prejump Depth D1 corresponding to Ef1 = 0.50 m
Postjump Depth D2 corresponding to Ef2 = 1.46 m
Length of cistern floor required = 5 (D2 - D1)
4.78 m
The downstream floor may be provided at R.L. 246.65 with a horizontal length
of 5.00 m. (from energy consideration)
(4) Depth of sheet piles from scour considerations :
U/S sheet pile :

As per IS 6531 : 1994, on the upstream side of the head regulator, cut-off should be provided
to the same depth as the cut-off stream of diversion work, if it exists or may be calculated as
below :-
Discharge intensity 'q' = 2.67 cumec/m
Depth of scour 'R' = 1.35{q /f}
2 1/3
= 2.60 m
Anticipated scour = 1.5 R = 3.89 m

R.L. of the bottom of scour hole = 250.15 - 3.89

= 246.26 m
yd
Minimum depth of u/s cutoff below bed level = + 0.5
2
(where yd is water depth im m at u/s ) = 2.10 m
R.L. of the bottom of scour hole = 244.85
(by minimum depth consideration)
Provide sheet pile line down to elevation 244.80 m

Program by - Sunil K Goyal 3 Checked by - P.P.Pareek

Office of Director Dam
575461512.xls
I.D.R.,Jaipur

D/S sheet pile :

Discharge intensity 'q' = 2.67 cumec/m

Depth of scour 'R' = 1.35{q2/f}1/3 = 2.60 m
Anticipated scour = 2 R = 5.19 m

R.L. of the bottom of scour hole = 249.85 - 5.19

= 244.66 m
yd
Minimum depth of d/s cutoff below bed level = + 0.5
2
(where yd is water depth im m at d/s ) = 2.10 m
R.L. of the bottom of scour hole = 244.55 m
(by minimum depth consideration)
Provide sheet pile line down to elevation 244.50 m

(5) Total floor length and exit gradient

The exit gradient should be checked for the condition that the canal is completely closed
when high flood is passing in the river; this provides the worst static condition.

Maximum static head = 250.15 - 246.65

= 3.50 m

Depth of d.s. cut off = 246.65 - 244.50

= 2.15 m

Since, H 1
GE = ---- ---------
d pÖl
Hence,
1 GE.d
----------- = ------------ = 0.154
pÖl H
From Khosla's exit gradient curve a = 7.53
Hence requirement of total floor length b = a.d
= 16.18 m

Adopt total floor length = 17.00 m

Therefore,
length of d/s floor = 2/3 X total impervious length
= 11.33 m
The floor length shall be provided as below:-

Downstream horizontal floor = 11.00 m

D/s glacis length with ( 2 :1 slope) = 1.60 m
Crest width = 2.00 m
U/s glacis length with ( 1 :1 slope) = 0.50 m
Upstream floor = 3.00 m
Total = 18.10 m

(6) Pressure calculations

Let the floor thickness in the u/s be 0.60 m and near the downstream cutoff
be 1.00 m.
(i) Upstream sheet pile
Let the thickness of sheet pile = 0.5 m
d = 246.95 - 244.80
= 2.15 m
b = 18.10 m
1 d 2.15
----- = ------ = -------- = 0.1188
a b 18.10
From Khosla's Pressure curves
l= 4.739
fD = 79%
fC = 70% ; f D - fC = 9%
Correction for floor thickness = 2.60% (+ ve)
Correction for interference due to d/s sheet pile line, C = 19ÖD/b'.(d+D)/b
where,
d = 246.35 - 244.80 = 1.55 m
D = 246.35 - 244.50 = 1.85 m
b' = 17.10
b = 18.10
Then,
C= 1.174% (+ ve)
fC corrected = 70% + 2.60% + 1.174%
= 73.39%
(ii) Downstream sheet pile
d = 246.65 - 244.50
= 2.15 m
b = 18.10 m
1 d 2.15
------ = ------ = --------- = 0.119
a b 18.10
From Khosla's Pressure curves
l= 4.739
fE1 = 30%
fD1 = 21% ; fE1 - fD1 = 9%
Correction for floor thickness = 4.34% (- ve)
Correction for interference due to u/s sheet pile line, C = 19ÖD/b'.(d+D)/b
where,
d = 245.65 - 244.50 = 1.15 m
D = 245.65 - 244.80 = 0.85 m
b' = 17.10
b = 18.10
Then,
C= 0.468% (- ve)
fE1 corrected = 30% - 4.34% - 0.468%
