documentary brief
key points:
1. How do you convince voters that this is not going to
disproportionately affect their finances?
2. What is the solution for voters who have interests in the fossil fuel
industry?
3. Goals
4. The price of doing nothing
5. Climate refugees
6. How would you prioritise the climate in Defense Strategy?
7. What keeps you up at night?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
climate change, the phrase itself has become a lightning rod of
controversy
“let’s listen to the consensus of the scientific community wherein they
said this is real” “this meltdown is changing the world”
There are those who are denying the fact of it all” – Kamala Harris
“we’re gonna have catastrophic wheather, unlike anything we have seen
ever.” -old white guy who’s not bernie sanders
to date famines and droughts more instability
the fact is, climate change is real, it’s happening now and the stakes
couldn’t be higher
“we’re living rn in the critical years”
“this is the most imp issue I think the entire world is facing”
“I think we have no choice but to act”“im worried that we’re running
out of time”
now that we stand squarely at the crossroads of our planet’s future, a
pivotal moment looms with the upcoming elections. In the race to save
the planet
Dr. Rick nab: meteorologist with the weather channel, former director of
national hurricane center
consortium of journalists sat down with 8 presidential candidates from
both parties to hear politician’s solutions
climate change has become a major campaign issue
mpb
“Still we think of climate change as something that’s happening on the
north pole, or only on the coast. In reality, every part of the country is
impacted by climate change.”
ms
“im a conservative republican, but there are too many folks denying the
reality, but let me get this right-
we believe in science and the way it can do amazing things for the body,
and we believe in the drugs and the healing powers based on science.
But we don’t believe in science beyond our bodies?? That just diesn’t
make sense”
kh
“avg global sea level has risen about 8 inches in the last century,
continues to accelerate upward”
“Concentration of CO2 in our atmosphere is the highest it’s been in at
least 800,000 years”
“the planet’s avg surface temperature has climbed roughly 1.5 degree
fah. Since 1900”
“based on records dating back to the late 1800s, the top five warmest
years are all since 2014. 2019 is currently on pace to be among the
warmest.”
it's not just statistics, we are experiencing the evidence of climate change
all around us the strongest hurricanes are getting stronger, heavy down
pours are increasing across the us and wildfires no longer limited to a
season are now a threat all year long
Mpb-
the first thing that I think about Is the south bend and knowing that
we’re just one extreme stormaway from having hundreds of thousands
of familiesout of their homes whether it’s something that causes the
rivers to rise a flash flood, a tornado or some matter disaster I can’t even
think of
Bw
Not to be alarmist but there are calculations that a lot of lesser
developed countries are not going to be able to support their
populations because of flooding and extreme climate.
This surge is going to be a lot more than 7 or 13 feet and I’m pretty sure
that’s right so, tell them that some parts of beach are not going to be
there. Forget it
ms
And flooding is jut sone part of the equation. According to the Yale Univ
research wildfires had destroyed nearly 40 million acres of US land over
last five years, a trend scientists say that’s likely to continue in a
warming world.
Wildfires are burning basically all year. coast to coast in this country
what has changed
“the trend appears to be more large scale fires, longer warmer summers
which generally would equate to longer fire seasons and probably larger
fire seasons”
in the last 20 years, the agency in charge of fighting large fires has had to
double the no. of meteorologists working wildfires nationwide
“the length of fire seasons we have been seeing, they’ve had been longer
back in the early 2000s you would get 6-7 months, and now we’re lucky
to get a couple of months of break before we send out the on-site
meteorologist now” Heath Hockenberry, nat’nl weather service
the planet is warming quickly. The overall temperature is warmer now
than it has been in 1000 years and likely longer
greenhouse gases trap more heat than ever. It’s all creating hotter areas,
longer droughts, more fuel for bigger wildfires, but it’s not just the
planet getting warmer; it’s us getting bolder.
we are building our homes right nest to the woods; even deep in the
canyons, where the fires begin
“ there’s more people moving into the wild lands that we have to worry
about and it’s a huge change. I think that’s a big part of it.”
“things will burn hotter, the fires will aggressive, the tactics will have to
be changed in order to combat those fires. The longer seasons inherently
mean more extreme fire behaviour
