Activity No. 3
THE EGG OF VERTEBRATES
Objectives:
1. To differentiate the egg of vertebrates
2. To explain how the amount of yolk present in the different vertebrate egg
affects the rate of cleavage during early development
Materials:
Fish egg
Frog’s egg
Chicken’s egg (fresh and boiled)
Fish egg
The egg of oviparous fish is enclosed with jelly and may not necessarily be spherical
in shape because of the development of the embryonic shield on the animal pole.
Frog’s egg
Same with fish egg, frog’s egg is also enclosed with a jelly. Two poles can be seen
clearly, the animal pole with black or chocolate color and the vegetal pole that appears
yellowish or red.
Chicken’s egg
Chicken’s egg have accessory materials. These are the albumen (egg white), the shell
membrane and the shell. These materials are deposited in the egg while it goes its way down
the oviduct by means of the secretions of the gland. Why is it that the oviduct of vertebrates
except mammals are called the egg assembly line?
Procedure:
1) Use boiled and fresh egg of chicken. Remove the shell on the wider side of
the boiled egg. In Figure 1, draw and identify the following structures;
a. Air space
b. Outer shell membrane
c. Inner shell membrane
d. Albumen
e. Vitelline membrane
f. Germinal spot
g. Egg yolk
2) Slowly break the portion below the shell of a fresh chicken’s egg on a
finger bowl. Illustrate in Figure 2 the following structures;
a. Germinal spot
b. Chalaza
3) With the use of a magnifying lens, examine, draw and label the egg of the
fish and frog as observed. Enter illustration in Figures 3 and 4.
4) Document all procedures by taking video of your procedure. Include the
video in your presentation.

Questions:
1) In tabular form, identify the functions of each part of the egg observed above.
2) Classify the type of egg that you have examined based on the amount of yolk
