THE BRIEF
During this project, you will be designing a custom
smartwatch based on a movie, book or video game
character. For example, Iron man, Hermione
Granger, Alice in wonderland.

Choose a character and begin to think about what

type of watch style or features would suit them. We
will progress through a short design phase to
generate concepts and then begin to model your
design in CAD. Your design must be original and
not a copy of an existing design.

This project is about CAD styling and being able to

turn concepts into reality with 3D printing. Your
design should include as many if not more of the
skills we have learnt so far. This project is an
opportunity to push your skills as far as possible.
ABSTRACT
Bella Rosso is a smartwatch inspired from the 1992
Studio Ghibi film, Porco Rosso. It has been designed
with the main protagonist in mind, Marco Pagot, a
flying, anthropomorphic pig flying over Italy.

The watch has useful, aviation centric features such as

airspeed reading, an altimeter, and traditional
smartwatch features such as time, heart rate and
smartphone notifications.

The main body is made of a painted aluminum,

designed to mimic the worn and ragged appearance of
his plane after a dogfight. And of course the Italian
colours are represented, with red in the main body,
white (or silver) in the main screen and green in the
form of the heart rate sensor light.

The bottom plate is made of stainless steel, and gives

access to the interior where the provided tech package,
modelled battery and crown live.
WEEK 5 - RESEARCH
The initial task was to choose a movie character, and sketch watches based on their features, traits and
characteristics.

Porco Rosso was chosen as there is a beautiful, art deco inspired aesthetic that would provide fun in sketching,
but also a challenge in how to integrate the vintage, streamlined aesthetic with a modern smartwatch.
WEEK 5 - RESEARCH
DIGITAL CONCEPT SKETCHES
This initial sketch is a regular circular watch that has been inspired by This next sketch starts to incorporate elements from the mood board
the roll and pitch display from a plane. It has a convex glass dome, in the form of propellers of a 40s era plane. The screens are mounted
and as the user rotates or pitches their wrist around, the display on the propellers, which allows for the easy integration of smartwatch
changes accordingly. This was more an exploration of form and features.
smartwatch functionality has not been considered yet.
WEEK 5 - RESEARCH
HAND CONCEPT SKETCHES
Further exploration on form and specific features that tie in with Marco, such as a
altimeter, airspeed sensor, and different layouts.
WEEK 5 - RESEARCH
HAND CONCEPT SKETCHES

Inspired by Bell and Ross watches, the

sketch on the right is the direction that
was taken for the watch. It features an
asymmetrical shape reminiscent of a
instrument cluster, and an engine.

CONCEPT PRESENTATION
WEEK 6 - STARTING CAD
EXERCISES AND INITIAL MODELLING
The IDN2001 Smartwatch tutorial Part 1. This provided
great insight to methods I would not normally think of,
like mirroring and reminded the importance or projections
in sketches.
WEEK 6 - STARTING CAD
EXERCISES AND INITIAL MODELLING
Initial CAD of Bella Rosso. Following the exact design on
the sketch. Also taking into consideration how the tech
package will fit. Since the screen is very recessed in, at
this current state, it will be extremely thick (20mm+).
WEEK 7 - CAD
EXERCISES AND PROGRESS
The IDN2001 Smartwatch tutorial Part 2. Good
information on how to make bands, clasps, etc. This was
created after the first model was printed, but the
processes undertaken for Bella Rosso are very similar.

Exploded view for illustration. Provided file is like the image on the right.
WEEK 7 - CAD AND PRINTING
PROGRESS
First file that was ready to be printed. On the left is the
model in construction view, and on the right is the layout
that was sent off to the 3D printer.
WEEK 7 - CAD AND PRINTING
NOTES Raised edge so that the screen
can clip on. The bottom of the
screen is cut out accordingly.

Screw holes for M2.5*8 screws.

Filleted on edge so screws can sit
flush with bottom.

Part of the moving dial for the

speed. These completely failed
to print on two occasions.
WEEK 7 - CAD AND PRINTING
PRINT RESULTS AND NOTES
Silver PLA, Infill 50%.

One of the band arms failed to print fully. Screws fit nice and flush.
WEEK 7 - CAD AND PRINTING
PRINT RESULTS AND NOTES

Looks great from the front. The print quality of the guide Tech package fits perfectly on first go. No changes to be
for the screen and the revolve cutout for the speed were made on this.
so poor that I ditched these ideas completely as it would
not be possible to print using dFab FDM printers.
WEEK 7 - CAD AND PRINTING
PRINT RESULTS AND NOTES

However, there is a clearance issue.

The height of the tech package was
not taken into account and it
cannot close. To fix this, the main
body was deepened and the back
plate was thinned out. Allows for
more space for the tech package
but doesn't increase overall
thickness.
WEEK 7 - CAD AND PRINTING
CAD CHANGES Rails added so that the leather
band to be created by hand can
loop around.

Airspeed dial is ditched and double screens

incorporated. This is actually more
reminiscent of the propeller inspiration so I
am happy with this.

Crown added and the rail slides into the tech

package hole.
WEEK 7 - CAD AND PRINTING
CAD CHANGES

A replaceable battery was modelled and incorporated to

fill the empty space and to compliment the tech package.
This is the final main body. In later versions, the fillet seen
below is actually removed, but this does not affect the
print.
WEEK 7 - CAD AND PRINTING
PRINT NOTES
Grey ABS, Infill 60%.

Battery doesn't fit. It is too

wide and long. Even after
sanding it down, it doesn't sit
flush.

With advice from the dFab

technician, this was printed
using ABS. The finish was
better, and the turnaround
time was quick.

Note: I forgot to take photos of the

parts before and after refinement. I
only have images of parts after spurs
and excess plastic has been removed.
WEEK 8 - CAD AND PRINTING
CAD AND PRINT CHANGES
CAD Changes:
1. Battery was made smaller. (Takes into account
printing tolerances.
2. Buckle clasp was modelled.
WEEK 8 - PRINTING
PRINT NOTES
Grey ABS, Infill 60%.

Buckle is not wide enough. The

strap is 28.5mm wide, and it
was only made 22mm wide.
Note: I forgot to take photos of the
parts before and after refinement. I
only have images of parts after spurs
and excess plastic has been removed.
WEEK 9 - CAD AND PRINTING
CAD CHANGES
The only changes made was the buckle clasp was
made to be as wide as the strap itself.
WEEK 9 - PRINTING AND CONSTRUCTION
PRINT AND NOTES
Grey, White and Black ABS, Infill 60-70%.

Prints from the front look

great! But are were impossible
to clean up without
destroying.
WEEK 9 - PRINTING AND CONSTRUCTION
PRINT AND NOTES
Grey, White and Black ABS, Infill 60-70%.

The black bottom plate was

used for the final build, as the
grey bottom plate is the one
that didn't fit properly. The
photo to the left is before
clean up. Minimal work done.
WEEK 9 - PRINTING AND CONSTRUCTION
PRINT AND NOTES
Grey, White and Black ABS, Infill 60-70%.

White model was burned and

melted in spots. No good.
WEEK 9 - PRINTING AND CONSTRUCTION
PRINT AND NOTES
Grey, White and Black ABS, Infill 60-70%.

However, the parts from the

black model fit great into the
week 7 body, which was used,
as this was the only one that
had a good finish, and no
changes were made to it past
week 7 anyways.

WEEK 9 - PRINTING AND CONSTRUCTION
PRINT AND NOTES
Creating the leather band. Was cut into strips and looped. Holes were drilled
using a 1.5mm drill bit and was sewed together.
Render Note*

Keyshot was completely unusable on my system, crashes, extremely laggy and

slow. Did not work properly on the 15th or the 17th of May. Fusion had to be
used instead. To compensate for this, the Fusion render was then touched up on
Photoshop and Procreate.
