CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter leads the reader from a general subject area to a particular topic of
inquiry. It establishes the scope, context, and significance of the research being
conducted by summarizing current understanding and background information about the
topic, stating the purpose of the work in the form of the research problem supported by a
hypothesis or a set of questions, explaining briefly the methodological approach used to
examine the research problem, highlighting the potential outcomes your study can reveal,
and outlining the remaining structure and organization of the paper.

1.0 Introduction

In modern times, YouTube has become the most popular video sharing website. It
can be a way to share different kinds of content that many people can relate. A lot of
YouTube influencers share their knowledge and experiences about everything that the
viewers can apply, especially the students or someone who wants to learn something and
those who wants to be optimistic.” Learners using vlogs become highly motivated and
engaged in active metacognitive learning as well as become involved in teamwork and
communication understandings.” (Litchfield, 2010). YouTubers connects better with
people by being approachable and building intimate experiences with their viewers.
Millennial YouTube subscribers say that their favorite content creators understand them
better than their friends.
Vloggers have taken the internet by storm and garnered massive followings across
social media. However, this video questions whether they are both corrosive for the
creator and the audience. Teenagers can adapt the behavior of YouTubers; their actions,
clothing and their language, if it has swearing, it could be a problem to those young
viewers. Teenagers must understand the potential outcomes of repeating behavior. Since
YouTubers have a young audience, they have to be careful with their influence and
content. “The types of actions users take and the kinds of information they are adding to
their profiles are a reflection of their identities.” (S. Sunder, 2015). Watching
motivational videos make the
viewers feel productive without all the work required in between. They might lift our
mood

temporarily but do nothing to combat the problem. The problem might be perfectionism.
It could be that you’re simply trying too much and the goals need to be broken down or a
number of other things that continues procrastination. It leads to only doing work when
we feel like it and waiting for magical inspiration to strike us on the head. Vlogs can be
really valuable, inspiring and entertaining but it is fundamental that we realize that there
are performances that give an exaggerated example of someone’s actual life.

The objective of this research is to determine if the hours spent of the students on
watching Motivational Vlogs has a relation to their Academic Performance. Furthermore,
the execution of this research will be specifying if the YouTube Influencers will be a
good role model to the viewers, who may adapt the behavior that they are encountering
through their contents. The purpose of this study is to know if watching motivational
vlogs will have a good impact on the student’s motivational behavior to have a good
performance distinctively to their academic accomplishments.

1.1 Objective of the study

The main objective of the study is to determine if the hours spent of the students
on watching Motivational Vlogs has a relation to their Academic Performance.

1.2 Statement of the problem

This study entitled “The Clock for success: The Relationship between Hours
spent on watching Motivational Vlogs and Academic Performance of Grade 12
Students in Our Lady of Fatima University” aims to determine the results of watching
motivational videos to the academic performance of the students.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents?

A. Gender
B. Age
C. Hours they spent watching Motivational Vlogs
D. Gen average on their 1st grading grades this school year (2019-2020)
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY Page |
02
2. What level does the vlogger motivates the behavior of the respondent?
3. Is there any significant relationship between the hours they spent watching
motivational vlogs to their academic performance?

1.3 Hypothesis
Ho: There is no significant relationship between the hours they spent watching
motivational vlogs to their academic performance?

1.4 Scopes and delimitation

The researcher will used quantitative research in this way researcher will
understand the realities and different view point of individuals. This is also perfect for
researcher topic because it will understand the variety of behavior and perception of the
target audience.
The location of the study is at HS Building of Our Lady of Fatima University,
Quezon City Branch. The chosen locale has sufficient respondent that is necessary for the
researcher. Data gathering will be conducted at afternoon classes so that extraneous
variable can be avoided same treatment and same respondent available that was needed
for the research, it will not be hard for the researcher to identify who will be the possible
respondent. The researcher chooses this location because most of the senior high school
student was located at this area.
The chosen respondent for this study is those who are watching Motivational
Vlogs, age bracket are 16-18 years old. One-hundred (100) respondent will be chosen to
be the source of data that is relevant for the study. The 100 respondents are students from
different strands: Accountancy & Business Management (ABM), Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMMS) and
General Academic (GA).

1.5 Significance of the study

To the future researchers: To serve as references and guide them in a significant
way about the outcomes of adapting the motivational behavior of YouTube influencer to

the academic performance of students.

To the school and teacher: To aware them that in watching YouTube vlogs,
students can adapt a motivation that will benefit them to be productive and have a good
academic performance.

To the respondents: This study will help them to realize the effects of watching
motivational vlogs to their academic performance.
To the parents: This will show as an indication that watching YouTube videos
doesn’t really have a bad effect to the students, but somehow it helps the students to be
motivated.
To the readers: To help them distinguish the benefits of watching YouTube
influencers to their motivational behavior towards their academic performance.
To the vloggers: This study may also motivate them to keep doing videos
because it helps student to be optimistic towards their lives.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter review surveys books, scholarly articles, and any other sources relevant to a
particular issue, area of research, or theory, and by so doing, provides a description,
summary, and critical evaluation of these works in relation to the research problem being
investigated.

2.0 Review of Related Literature (Online)

Wilma Westenberg (2016) stated that, 96% of the youngsters aged between 13
and 24 regularly use YouTube. They consume online videos via social media sites for an
average of 11 hours a week, making it their most popular website. This popularity is
reflected again in the number of YouTubers that focus on teenagers. The influence
YouTubers have on the behavior of teenagers is increasingly unprecedented. They are
seen as role models and often recognized in the streets by their fans.

Dann Albright (2016) stated that, in the quest for self-improvement, you’ll often
find yourself in need of some inspiration and motivation to keep going. Self-help books
used to be the go-to resource for people looking to improve their lives. But with the
popularity of the topic, you can tap into some great YouTube videos for quicker wisdom.
These ten YouTube channels will aid you in your self-improvement process; Fight
Mediocrity, Big Think, Actualized.org, School of Life and Basquiat Picasso. They
will explain psychological concepts and some of them will motivate you to achieve more.
All of them will teach you important lessons about the world.

Katelyn In (2018) stated that, YouTube has 1.8 billion active monthly users and 1
billion hours of videos are being watched per day, according to TechCrunch. Chances are
your potential customers are already on YouTube just waiting for your videos to reach
them. In (2018) suggested that creating good videos require a lot of time, money, and
effort, therefore, a consistent and realistic production schedule is key to maintaining
quality.

Eva Van Reijmersdal (2019) stated that, Social media influencers (e.g. beauty)

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY Page |

06

bloggers, video game vloggers, toy unboxers, instafamous) are extremely popular among
minors. Influencers seem to play an important role in minors' lives, first, because minors
spend a large part of their time watching, viewing, liking, forwarding, and commenting
on influencers' content. As such, the level of involvement with influencer content seems
high. Second, minors turn to these influencers not only for entertainment, but also for
information, advice, company and comfort.

Karen Mcgaughley (2011) stated that, Social media influencers represent a new
type of independent third-party endorser who shape audience attitudes through blogs,
tweets, and the use of other social media because of the persuasive power of social media
influencers, technologies have been developed to identify and track the influencers
relevant to a brand or organization.

Cheah Jun Hwa (2019) stated that, in marketing, endorsement plays a significant
role in achieving a company’s good reputation and business goals. In recent years, social
media influencers have established themselves as potential endorsers by generating a
range of buzzwords as compared to other marketing strategies (i.e., celebrity
endorsement), and are deemed to be the most cost-efficient and effective marketing
trends.

Chris Synder (2019) stated that, why study alone, when you can study with a
bunch of strangers from all over the world? This is gong bang, which translates to "study
broadcast" in Korean. In Japan, it's known as “benkyou douga”, and in the US and other
parts of the world, it's simply called "study with me." It's a type of video in which people
prepare for an exam on camera, while other people watch and study as well. This might
not sound like riveting entertainment, but these videos are racking up millions of views
on YouTube.

Aneela Hoque (2018) stated that, YouTube influencers are highly influential
through their ability to make the viewer feel like they know them; they are your ‘friend’.
They feel authentic and genuine, far more so than actors and actresses. The authenticity

factor is so important to their ability to sell or recommend a product to their audience.

Their perceived accessibility is also important. They aren’t glossy and unreachable like

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY Page | 07

celebrities; they feel, to many viewers, like them. Smaller influencers, despite less reach,
can have an even greater engagement rate and influence, as they truly know their
following.

Vaibhavi Nandagiri (2018) stated that, many times, the influencers are often
unnoticed for the work they do. Although with the rise of social media, there is a growth
in the influencer as a profession, many companies are now realizing the potential they
possess. On a video forum such as YouTube, influencers have the liberty and the time to
properly explain the features of a product as well as express their opinions of the same.

Joel Mathew (2018) stated that, influencer marketing is a relationship between a

brand and an influencer. The influencer promotes the brand’s products or services
through various media outlets such as Instagram and YouTube. Not to be confused with
celebrity endorsements, influencer marketing does more than just attach a well-
known celebrity to a brand. Influencers must be trusted figures within a niche community
and retain a loyal following. In addition, they typically possess knowledge or experience
about what they are advertising.

Mina Vähäjylkkä (2017) stated that, marketers have been using influencer
marketing as celebrity endorsement for decades until YouTubers became popular enough
and started to replace traditional celebrities for marketing means. The audience feels
more genuine connection with YouTubers through engagement, similar humor and the
absence of filters, which partly explains their growing popularity compared to traditional
celebrities.

Sabina Kwakye (2018) stated that over the years, social media has become an
avenue of advertisement for most organizations. Among the thriving social media sites is
YouTube which is currently the second most accessed website on the internet.
YouTubers or content creators are "interacting" with their audiences and most of them are
well known in the YouTube community.

Chloe Doble (2019) stated that, motivation can be defined as the factors which
direct and energies the behaviors of humans and other organisms- the drive behind the
that how you feel influencers what you watch. Strangely, it seems to be the first study to

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY Page | 08

reasons we do things. Through a combination of the approaches to motivational behavior,

it is possible to begin to understand the emerging patterns of complex human needs and
behavior. Motivational behavior draws on parts of all of the theories explained in this
article. These are described as innate and essential as basic biological needs.

Lisa Qiqi (2019) stated that, adaptive behavior refers to behavior that enables a
person to get along in his or her environment with greatest success and least conflict with
others. This is a term used in the areas of psychology and special education. Adaptive
behavior relates to every day skills or tasks that the average person is able to complete,
similar to the term life skills. Nonconstructive or disruptive social or personal behaviors
can sometimes be used to achieve a constructive outcome. In other words, the behavior
can be adapted to something else.
Kaycee Jhangiani (2018) stated that people develop a set of social knowledge that
contains information about the self, other people, social relationships, and social groups.
Two types of knowledge are particularly important in social
psychology: schemas and attitudes. Social cognition involves the active interpretation of
events.

Colin Robertson (2014) stated that, “This time is going to be different.” Those are
the first words we tell ourselves when we set a goal to change our behavior. Despite our
past failures, we believe this time we will summon the willpower to make it stick. He
found factors that influence behavior change and how you can use them to achieve your
goals; Willpower, Knowledge and skills, Social motivation, Social ability and Structural
motivation.

Rohit Kumar Singh (2013) stated that, the ingredients of motivation lie within all
and the internalized drive toward the dominant thought of the moment. Motivation
directly links to individual performance that gain to organization performance and as a
catalyzer for all individual employees working for an organization to enhance their
working performance or to complete task in much better way than they usually do.

Scotty Hendrick (2019) state that what you watch can influence how you feel and

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY Page | 09

investigate these notions as they relate to online videos. The findings are in line with
previous studies of other text-based social media platforms.

Andrew Arnold (2017) stated that, 63% of respondents aged between 13-24 said
that they would try a brand or a product recommended by a YouTube content creator,

whereas only 48% mentioned the same about a movie or TV star. Businesses are taking
notice and turning more to common folk than mainstream celebrities to reach millennials.
Interestingly, the influence of YouTube stars on younger folks goes well beyond
shopping.

Ellina Mironova (2016) stated that, audiences perform as a key factor driving
social media nowadays, and there would not be any point to create video content on
YouTube if there was nobody to watch it. It is therefore important to study audiences and
their behavior in order to find out viewers' preferences and to understand what makes
them follow YouTube channels.

Wilma Westenberg (2016) stated that, teenagers are raised in an era of

smartphones and do not remember a time before social media. They are seen as role
models and are often recognized in the streets by their fans. However, despite being
famous online, outside the YouTube community they are just average people that could
be the person living next door. Parents often do not know about the online behavior of
their children and the YouTubers they endorse.

Ella Weinbeck (2018) stated that, the video-sharing website has received high
praise on many levels from children to adults. The highly versatile site has become a
place for influence and inspiration. Whether it be through means of makeup and fashion
videos, or positive reinforcements and outlooks, the platform has reached an educational
emergence.

Meilani Bitanga (2018) stated that, 96% of teenagers between the ages of 13 and
24 use Youtube on a regular basis for an average of 11 hours a week to view videos of
their choosing, whether it be gaming, music, or how-to videos. Content creators on
YouTube as well as the videos they share have brought negative connotation to the
website’s reputation.

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY Page |

10

YouTube is a social media platform that allows users to upload content to share with
viewers around the world, but some believe they have abused their platform.

Chantal Strasburger (2015) stated that, Social media has long been given a bad
rap for disengaging youth, isolating teens, and just generally being a negative influence
on kids. But good news for those of you who couldn't bear to disconnect for the sake of
morality: A new study shows that YouTube actually positively impacts the lives of young
millennials. 62% of Americans ages 13-24 go on social media just because it makes them
feel good. And many of them said they actually have more respect and admiration for
YouTube celebrities than they do for the Hollywood variety.

Nicky Palkowski (2018) stated that, most people in America have used YouTube
or at least know about what it is. It provides many different types of videos from
entertainment, music, news, to much more, but how does this impact our society today?
The impacts are bigger than you may think, changing American society as soon as we
think we know it. Many supports the creators because of the person they are. That also
includes the way the carry themselves and their attitude. Their thoughts, feelings and
opinions mean something to their viewers.

Alice Staff (2019) stated that, YouTube is also fertile ground for creative guys
with

ideas and content to share with other users. Others simply give advice, even of a practical
nature, such as how to look more attractive or how-to pass-through levels of video games.
Others still simply talk about themselves, their lives, not particularly specific issues,
while doing something funny or insane; to create a surreal and irreverent atmosphere that
arouses sympathy and humor.

Rachel Thompson (2018) stated that in many vlogs, teens film themselves just
sitting and studying in silence. In others, they speak directly to the camera about their
routines, hopes, dreams, worries, and rejections. These videos don't just dispense useful
tips and tricks for getting the most out of study time; they also provide a community for
studious, academically minded teens who feel isolated and in a minority at school.

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY Page |

11

Malik Al Zboon (2018) stated that, the 2nd generation Web is based on a number
of key tools, including blogs, social bookmarking and social networks that are interactive
and connected to a virtual medium, which is considered one of the latest technologies
used in education. They worked to consolidate social relations between users to break the
fence of social isolation in a lot of individuals, these networks are characterized by
interactivity and communication in a collaborative virtual medium.
Morgan Glucksman (2017) stated that, as media and technology have become
more advanced, companies can choose from a range of options in outlets to market their
products. These options have also led to the evolution of social media influencer
marketing. The rise of social media has opened up a new channel for brands to connect
with consumers more directly and more organically. If a brand is not using social media
influencer marketing as a strategy to better attract its target audience, now may be the
time for the company to start evaluating their advertising strategy.

Tanya McGill (2018) observed that, the social participation in YouTube is

actually “minimalist”. The difference between YouTube, with its emphasis on content
engagement, and socially engaging internet platforms such as Facebook and has been
recognized in literature that discusses the advantages of use, but largely ignored in the
literature of problematic use until very recently.

Rita Monkbot (2019) state that as the world's largest video hosting website,
YouTube has had impact in many fields, with some individual YouTube videos having
directly shaped world events. YouTube enables inexpensive creation and distribution of
academic educational content, as well as "how to" videos created by individual
YouTubers. YouTube videos have spread of awareness of social issues (such as bullying,
suicide and LGBT issues), they have also included potentially harmful content.

Susan Whitbourne (2011) stated that, judging from the panoply of motivational
books, speeches, videos, and how-to guides, you'd think that psychology has the surefire
answer that can explain the simple basis for our many complex behaviors. As it turns out,
the complexity of our behavior requires a complex set of explanatory ideas.

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY Page |

12

Klobas McGill (2018) observed that, US university students shared links from an
“information giving” motive, while their content consumption was motivated primarily
by need for relaxation and entertainment. Nonetheless, students and members of the
public do use YouTube to meet needs for information and learning, even when other
resource choices might be available to them
Andrew Arnold (2017) stated that, millennials are currently the largest consumer
demographic with about $1.3 trillion in buying power as at the end of 2015. This
powerful demographic is a choice target for brands, but millennials in large part don’t
watch TV and don’t care much what mainstream celebrities have to say about products or
services. They trust their social media tribes and peer-to-peer advice the most. In a study
commissioned by Defy Media, 63% of respondents aged between 13-24 said that they
would try a brand or a product recommended by a YouTube content creator, whereas
only 48% mentioned the same about a movie or TV star. Interestingly, the influence of
YouTube stars on younger folks goes well beyond shopping.

Joe Car (2011) stated that, Motivational Theories are based on the educational
psychology stance that motivation is a condition based on an individual’s needs, desires
and wants. There are 4 Conditions have to be met for a learner to be motivated to learn:
Attention, Relevance, Confidence and Satisfaction.

2.1 Review of Related Literature (Book)

Motivation is the process by which activities are started, directed and continues so
that physical or psychological needs or wants are met. The word itself comes from the
Latin word mover, means “to move”. Motivation is what “moves” people to do things

they do. word mover, which means “to move”. Motivation is what “moves” people to do
things they do. (Ciccarelli and White, 2017)

A theory of motivation that is similar to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is the self-

determination theory of Richard Ryan and Edward Deci (2000). In this theory, there are
three inborn and universal needs that help people gain a complete sense of self and
whole, healthy relationships with others. The three needs are autonomy, or the need to be
in control OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY
Page | 13

of one’s own behavior and goals; competence, or the need to be able to master the
challenging tasks of one’s life and relatedness, or the need a sense of belonging,
intimacy, and security in relationship with others.
Ciccarelli and White (2017), believes that satisfying these needs can best be
accomplished if the person has a supportive environment in which to develop goals and
relationships with others.

Motivation is ang internal state that activates, guides and sustains behavior.
(Hodgson, 2017) Motivation can have several impacting effects on how students learn
and how they behave toward subject matter.

In positive practice, students replace one behavior with another. (Woolfolk, 2016)
This approach is especially appropriate for dealing with academic errors. When students
make a mistake, they must correct it as soon as possible and practice the correct response.

Instinct approaches have faded away because, although they could describe
human behavior, they could not explain it. (Ciccarelli and White, 2017) These
approaches did accomplish one important thing by forcing psychologist to realize that
some human behavior is controlled by hereditary factors. This idea remains central in the
study of human behavior today.

Early attempts to understand motivation focused on the biologically determined

and innate patterns of behavior called instincts that exist in both people and animal.
(Ciccarelli and White, 2017) Just as animals are governed by their instincts to perform
activities such as migrating, nest building, mating and protecting their territory,
evolutionary theorist proposed that human beings may also be governed by similar
instincts.

Kalat (2010) states that, motivation is the process that determines the
reinforcement value of an outcome. In more everyday language, motivation is what
makes you want something more at one time and less at another.

An intrinsic motivation is a motivation to do an act for its own sake. An extrinsic

motivation is based on the reinforcements and punishments that the act may bring. (Kalat,
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY Page |
14
2010) For example, reading a book for enjoyment displays an intrinsic motivation,
whereas reading a book to pass a test depends on an extrinsic motivation.

Motivation is what makes you want something more at one time and less at another.
(Kalat, 2010) Motivated behavior is a goal directed behavior. Motivated behaviors do not
maintain exact constancy because our behavior often anticipate future needs.

The most effective goals are difficult but realistic. (Kalat, 2010) People who persist
longer toward their goals tend to be more successful, happier and more resilient in the
face of stress. Any kind of motivation requires a king of striving but each kind of striving
has its own special features.

People with a high sense of self-efficacy are more likely to exert effort in attempting to
accomplish a task; they are also more likely to persist when they encounter obstacles.
(Ormrod, 2004) Students with low self-efficacy about a task put less effort into it ang
give up more quickly in the face of difficulty.

The videographer shoots and captures appropriate, compelling and high-quality video
footage to be use on the website. Some people are visual learners, they learn or are
inspired by reading, seeing or visualizing. Other are auditory and learn best by listening.
And, there are kinesthetic learners who learns by doing through a combination of these
learning styles (Calleen, 2016)

Many people with the ability to succeed give up after few discouragements, but others
keep on trying. (Kalat, 2010) You will hear people says “never give up”. That is a good
motto, usually people who persist longer toward their goals tend to be more successful,
happier and more reliant in the face of stress. While, people who have difficulty, give up
after their goals become impossible tend to have problem in both physically and mental
health.

2.2 Conceptual Framework

A conceptual framework represents the researcher’s synthesis of literature on how

to explain a phenomenon. It  is the researcher’s understanding of how the
particular variables in his study connect with each other. Thus, it identifies the variables
required in the research investigation. It is the researcher’s “map” in pursuing the
investigation.

2.3 Research Paradigm

Research paradigms are used as a guideline for developing research methodology

and to take on the research venture in a manner that is most valid and appropriate.

motivational vlogs and their general average on the first grading this year. The
independent variable used in this study is the hours spent on watching Motivational
Vlogs, while the dependent variable is the Academic Performance of students. To
measure the relation of two variables, researchers will use a research instrument which is
a questionnaire with the use of statistical treatment, Likert Scale and Pearson’s
Correlation Equation. Researchers believe that these instruments will help them to
identify the relationship between the hours they spent on watching Motivational Vlogs
and their Academic Performance. In addition, conclusion and recommendation were
formulated in accordance with the findings that the researchers were able to acquire.

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In this chapter, it describes actions to be taken to investigate a research problem and the
rationale for the application of specific procedures or techniques used to identify, select,
process, and analyze information applied to understanding the problem, thereby, allowing
the reader to critically evaluate a study’s overall validity and reliability.

3.1 Research Design

The researcher will used quantitative approach in this way the researcher will
create a systematic empirical investigation of observable phenomena through the use of
computational technique. This is also perfect because it can be generalized to some larger
population and explain a particular observation. It can help to compute and analyze the
problem very well.

The research design that will use is Correlational research design it can help the
researchers to identify the relationship between watching Motivational vlog and
Academic Performance of the respondents.

3.2 Research Setting/locale

The study will be conducted in Our Lady of Fatima University, #1 Esperanza

Street, Hilltop Mansion Heights, Lagro, Quezon City since the respondents are the Senior
High School (SHS) students of this school.
The researchers picked HS Building as the location where the gathering data will
happen, researchers believe that the respondents in that building will be good enough to
answer their questions that can help to their specific study.

3.3 Research Subject

In this part of research study, participating the data survey are completely
voluntary.

The chosen respondent for this study is those who are watching YouTube often in
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY Page |

Grade 12 from different strands, age bracket from 16-18 years old. One hundred (100)
respondents will be chosen to be the source of data that is relevant for the study. The
survey will be conducted around the campus of Our Lady of Fatima University.
Purposive Sampling is the one that the researchers will use to  ensure that the
respondents has an enough knowledge about the study that will be conducted.

3.4 Research Ethics

In conducting a research, it is guided by legal and ethical principle that will

ensure the integrity of the respondents in the research study. Research that is harmful to
the participants is undesirable (Hansen & Myers, 2006). The researchers have to follow
the guidelines and ethical rules to construct the research study.

In addition, the researchers assure to have anonymity between the participants,

any personal information will be confidential. The information conducted by the
researchers are all for studies purpose only. Respondents who will leave the research are
allowed and the information they have gave will be discarded from the study.

3.5 Research instruments

The instrument used to gather data for this research is in the form of
questionnaire, using this method the respondents can easily understand and answer the
given question and the respondents feel that they remain anonymous and for the
researchers, they can save time in collecting data. The style used by the researchers in
conducting a survey are Multiple Choice and Likert Scale. The questions are self-made
by the researchers that based on their topic.

3.6 Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will use a primary data collection wherein collecting the data will
be a survey method. The questionnaire will be provided by the researchers to know if
watching YouTube vloggers has an impact to their behavior.

First, the researchers will conduct their survey at HS building of Our Lady of
Fatima University Quezon City Campus with the respondents of 100 students.

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY Page |

20
Next, the researchers must gather 100 questionnaires that will be answered by the
students under different strands. Lastly, after collecting the survey questionnaires.
Researchers will analyze the collected data and will be proceed to conclusion.

3.7 Statistical Treatment

In determining the outcomes of watching motivational videos of Senior High

School students of Our Lady of Fatima University, the Likert Scale has been used. It used
a five-point scale; each point corresponding to a Likert item. Students are statistically
analyzed by the data instruments of the study.

Point Scale Verbal

Interpretation

5. 4.2 – 5 Extremely Motivated

4. 3.4 - 4.19 Very Motivated

3. 2.6 – 3.9 Somewhat Motivated

2. 1.8 - 2.59 Not so Motivated

1. 1.0 – 1.79 Not at all

In addition, the researchers will use Pearson’s Correlation Equation to know the
relationship between the hours they spent in watching motivational Vlogs and their
academic performance.
To identify the relationship of the two variables this formula will be needed:

CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the data gathered, the results of the statistical analysis done
and interpretation of findings. These are presented in tables following the sequence of the
specific research problem regarding on the research topic.

Table 1.1 Demographic Profile of the Respondents in Terms of Gender

Gender Frequency (f) Percentage (%)
Male 24 24
Female 76 76
TOTAL 100 100
Table 1.1 shows the distribution of the respondents according to their gender.

The table above indicates that over 100 respondents from different strands in Grade 12,
more than half of them were females with the percentage of 76% and the remaining 24%
were males. It tells that females are more into watching motivational vlogs than men.

According to Aslam (2019), 95% of global internet population watches YouTube.

62% of YouTube users are females, while the 33% is males. He added that males are
primarily watching soccer or strategy games while females are primarily watching beauty
videos or something inspirational.

Table 1.2 shows the distribution of the respondents according to their age.
The table above shows that over one hundred percent (100%) of the respondents from
different strands, 58% of them were 17 years old, 25% were 18 years old and 17% were
16 years old. The data shows that 17 years old students are more into watching
motivational

vlogs than those who are 16 or 18 years old. This also shows that students who are in 12 th
grade are primarily 17 years old.

A 2007 PEW internet study indicates that young adults, ages 17-29 are the most
avid viewers of online videos in the world. (Madden, 2015)

Table 1.3 shows the distribution of the respondents according to their Final Average this
School Year.
The table shows the 1st grading average of the respondents this school year. In
terms of G.A it shows that only 18% of 100 respondents have the final average of 97,
with reference to the 95 general average it shows the dominance who have 17% of the
respondents, following with the 35% of the students who got 90, next with 15% for those
who got a final average of 85, and the last who got a final average of 80 are 15% only of
the total population. Tables shows that the mean average grade of the students is 90, most
of the respondents passed the first grading of this school year. Second to the highest mean
average grade is 97, this shows that some of the students in Our Lady of Fatima
University is very responsible towards their academic performance. And the K-12
program that have started helped most of the students to their studies.

The k - 12 program helps the students to improve their knowledge, helps to prepare for a
higher degree of education, develops. Students’ skills, promote career opportunities and
to find a job often completing the k - 12 or senior high school. (Camarinas, 2019)

Table 1.4 shows the duration of time of the respondent spends in watching vlogs.

The table shows how long that the students spend their time in terms of watching
motivational vlogs. 15% of the 100 respondents who spend their time for only 1 hour,
following with the percentage; 15% tells that they spend their time watching vlogs for 2
hours, next with the highest percentage of 35% who spend their time for 3 hours next,
with 17% tells that they spend their time of watching motivational vlogs for about 4
hours and lastly, the remaining 18% spend their time in watching vlogs for 5 hours. The
data shows that 70% of the respondents spends a lot of time in watching Motivational
Vlogs, that range to 3 to 5 hours.

According to Daniel (2019), 83% of teenagers used their phone for at least 3
hours, while only 17% used it for less than 3 hours. This shows that the strong majority
use their phones quite a lot. According to official YouTube stats, users view 1 billion
hours of videos on the platform, every single day. 3.25 billion videos are viewed each
month.

Google has released the information that 70% of YouTube users use the platform
in order to sort out a problem related to their work, school, or hobbies. In addition,
majority of YouTube users are not using the platform strictly for killing time. 86% of
them, according to Google’s data, use YouTube to try and learn new skills and things.

Table 1.5 shows the answer of the respondents if watching vlogs benefits them.

The table shows that 96% of the Respondents agreed that watching motivational
vlogs benefits them because watching motivational vlogs can help them to be motivated
and give a positive vibe on them. Somehow there are 6% of the respondent disagreed.
But majority of the respondents put a trust to the motivational vloggers, and they believe
that it benefits them to be motivated.
Trustworthiness is an important attribute of online information sources. According to
previous research, trustworthiness of information source has had a statistically significant
effect on the acceptance of oral information, consequentially it effects on the attitude of
the viewers. (Park, 2009).

because watching motivational vlogs doesn’t really affects their time on studying. It
shows that majority of the respondents know to handle their time when it comes to the
time, they are watching vlogs and studying.

Vlogs allow students to learn information at a time and place that is convenient for the.
Students may feel less pressure when they are allowed to think about a topic and listen to
a lesson as many times as needed without the pressure from a class to move on. Students
may focus better a different time of day or in a different environment than in a school
setting. (Siegchrist, 2012)

that in watching Motivational Vlogs, it helps them with their academic performance.
They believed that in this way they are being motivated to do good at their tasks or goals.

Gage and Berliner (1984) said that, “Motivation is the term to describe what energizes a
person and what directs his or her activity.” That statement implies that motivation can be
seen from the activities done by the learners.

the participants who watched motivational vlogs help them also to increased their
motivational behavior. And that motivational behavior somehow helps them to do well in
school, especially on gaining a high grade.

Willmot (2012), show that there is strong evidence that digital video reporting can inspire
and engage students when incorporated into student-centered learning activities through;
increased student motivation, enhanced learning experience, higher marks and
development potential for deeper learning of the subject.

As the given result, many of the respondents agreed that motivational vlogs help
them to be motivated with the percentage of 89% and most of the respondents doesn’t
feel motivated so they answered 'no' with the percentage of 11%. It shows that a lot of
respondents become motivated with the help of watching Motivational Vlogs.

Motivation is that which moves a person inwardly to behave in a certain manner. In other
words, it is simply ‘a reason’ behind a person’s actions. Without motivation nothing
happens in life.  “Inspiration” can be taken as the highest level of motivation and the
ability to inspire is said to be one of the most sought-after qualities of all outstanding
leaders. When a leader inspires, he also creates many leaders with him because of his
ability to motivate and inspire. (Chathanadath, 2016)

2 got the frequency of 4%. However, some didn’t feel any excitement when watching
vlogs, they give the lowest rate which is 1-0 and with the frequency of 2%. This shows
that, motivational vloggers have a big positive effect on the viewers, they give the
viewers a motivation to keep on moving.

I must tell you that as soon as you finish watching one motivational video

on a particular topic you’re drowning in, you would feel so positive and energize and at
that moment you feel so positive about future and not feel sorry about the past, you
would be fully prepared to give your best in whatever problems and test life wants you
face, it feels like a something started to flow through your veins and motivational videos

11%, it just means they are not motivated by the vloggers. Majority of the respondents
agreed that motivational vloggers helped them to be motivated, to keep going, to keep
pursuing their dreams, their goals.

According to Shivam (2016), whenever we watch motivational videos our mind is

spread up with positivity and we feel better for some time. Indeed, it is a good practice to
watch motivational videos and read motivational things daily or after some duration to
make you positive and move further in life.

50% for average level and another 50% for high level. In number 10, it shows that it has
the highest weighted score, 365, it states that “Motivational vlogs help me to understand
deep situation that I encounter in my life.” In this result, the researchers concluded that
motivational vlog is one of the factors that helps the students have better understanding
about life and that leads them on achieving their goals especially in terms of their
academic performance.

According to Dube (2016), as he paid attention to each of the speakers in these

videos, he started looking around at his life a little more. The thing that he never would
have expected about this experience was that doing this experiment would change the
entire focus of his life. Instead of surviving, his new focus — and his new daily goals and
to-do lists — would be focused not on surviving, but on thriving; being happy today,
because we’re not guaranteed to have tomorrow.

The table shows a positive correlation because the P-Value which is 0.0001 is less
than the alpha value of 0.05, so the two variables has a significant relationship wherein if
the variable 1(hours spent on watching Motivational Vlogs) increase, variable 2
(Academic Performance) increases too. So, to relate to our study, if students spend more
time on watching motivational vlogs it also increases their academic performance in
terms of their grades/GPA.

According to Away for The Day, a study by Delaney Ruston on the effects of
screen time, college students participated in various cognitive tests with watching
motivational vlogs and not, it was found that “the presence of watching motivational
vlogs positively

impacted attention and task performance.” In addition, Brenda Graves, a science teacher
at Willoughby-Eastlake Schools, agrees with the impact that watching motivational vlogs
can have not only on grades, but youth as a whole.
The relationship between watching motivational vlogs and grades is not a causal
relationship but rather a correlation meaning that watching motivational vlogs doesn’t
directly cause grades to go up, it’s just one factor that could potentially affect higher
grades. (Daniel, 2019)

This shows that the longer you spend on watching motivational vlogs, the higher
the likelihood that you’ll get a high grade.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the research interpretation of the results given in Result
Section or in Chapter IV, also drawing conclusions from their analysis of those results
and then make recommendations based on their analysis. In short, tell the reader what the
results mean and what actions should be taken as a result of their findings.

Conclusion

1.1 The researchers conclude that the respondents handle their academics well.
That watching vlogs doesn’t affect their studies in a negative way.

1.2 The researchers conclude that although they spend time on watching
Motivational vlogs it is not became a distraction but an inspiration to do well in class.

1.3 Majority of the respondent agreed that watching motivational vlogs benefits
them in many ways like on their studies and how to manage a simple problem.

1.4 Almost half of the respondents disagreed in the statement that watching
motivational vlogs affects their time in studying.

1.5 The researchers concluded that the students who watch motivational vlogs
helps them to perform well because they are motivated especially in terms of their
academic status.

1.6 Most of the respondents answered that they are more likely to be motivated in
life as they watch motivational vlogs and increase their self-esteem.

1.7 The researchers concluded that the majority of the respondents feel motivated
when they are watching vlogs and assured their positiveness. Although, there are some
respondents that didn’t feel any motivation when it comes to watching vlogs.

1.8 The researchers concluded that the majority of the respondent’s rate when it

comes to their level of happiness/motivation is 8-10 which really gives the respondents

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY Page | 34

their satisfaction when watching vlogs. While there are some respondents that rate 1-0
because they didn’t feel any satisfaction.
1.9 The researchers concluded that majority of the respondents agreed that in
watching motivational vlogs help them to be optimistic about life but there’s still some
that it doesn’t really makes them to be optimistic.

1.10 The researchers concluded that watching Motivational Vlogs has a positive
impact towards the students because base on the results of the survey conducted
respondents are being motivated by watching motivational vlogs and that leads them to
be optimistic about life and because of it they tend to perform well in achieving their
goals especially in terms of their Academic performance.

1.11 The researchers concluded that the more the student spend their time watching
Motivational vlogs, the more they will possibly get a high grade. Because the more the
student engage with the motivational vlogs, it influences their behavior and that result to
be more motivated to achieve their goals especially to their academic performance.

Recommendations

Based on the findings and conclusion in the study, the following

recommendations are suggested:

2.1 Some of the respondents got an average grade of 84 below last school year. It
is recommended for them to try watching motivational vlogs because majority of the
respondents agreed that by watching motivational it leads them. Delegation (2010) stated
that media can attract the attention of students towards the subject matter presented so
that interest in learning will further increase in this way students may be motivated in
aiming high grades and perform well in school.

Some of the respondents said that by watching motivational vlogs it affects their
time in studying. Researchers suggests that they should try managing their time, Juneja
(2015) stated that individuals who accomplish tasks on time are less prone to stress and
anxiety with this, even though students are watching vlogs they can still have time on

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY Page |

35
focusing on stated that individuals who accomplish tasks on time are less prone to stress
and anxiety with this, even though students are watching vlogs they can still have time on
focusing on their study.

2.3 Based on the results, majority of the respondents said that by watching
motivational vlogs, Orly (2017) once said in her vlogs, “Don’t worry about the small
things in life. Completely focus on the beautiful little things in life. The little things in life
are what make it worth living.” With the kind of words like this, student may become
optimistic and it may lead them to understand better their lives. So, it is recommended to
the parents of the students to permit their child on watching motivational vlogs because it
may help their child to be motivated and aim high in school.

2.4 For the teachers, it is recommended that they should try to use motivational
videos as part of their discussion. Ingersoll (2017) stated that media have the power to
improve our schools and build more compassionate, connected communities. This may
help the students to understand more the lessons that are related to the vlog they are going
to watch.

2.5 For the administration, this study may open their eyes that some students are
lack of motivation and that affect their daily lives especially in terms of their academic
performance. So, it is recommended that they come up an activity that deals on gaining
motivation of the students.

2.6 For the readers, this study recommends them to think about watching
motivational vlogs because that may help them to be understand life better and the
motivation that they will gain will inspire them to do well in their daily lives. Unlike
traditional media such as broadcast television, it appears that a major motivation for
vlogging is to receive feedback and support from viewers and find friendships in the
community (Luers, 2007). In watching vlogs, this will not just help the students to be
motivated but also to build friendships.

2.7 For the guidance counselors, based on the study there are some students that
seem like demotivated so in this term, it is recommended that they should reach out the

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY Page | 36

students because this demotivated behavior may lead to serious depression. Ehrmantrout
(2015) stated that, Depression saps motivation so completely, the depressed person can
often find herself in the midst of a pile of tasks left undone and plans left unrealized.

2.8 Since based on the study, watching motivational vlogs can help the student to
have a better academic performance. It is recommended to the YouTubers to create more
videos that will inspire a lot more people. Just like those students who experienced it
already. It is widely accepted that student motivation is a key element within the learning
process. The extant educational literature has proven the positive effect of using new
technologies as a support tool for enhancing learning. These technologies capture
students’ attention as students are familiarized with them and they can easily use these
tools. (Donna Roberts, 2017)

2.9 For psychologist, this may serve as reference to understand the motivational
behavior of a student or person by watching motivational vlogs. With this, they can
understand that there are a lot of factors that affects the motivational behavior of a person
and watching motivational vlog is one of those factors. Psychologist Gillihan (2017)
stated that, he often recommends social apps and YouTube channels to his young clients,
and credits responsible video creators with providing resources that viewers might
otherwise have difficulty accessing because of cost or their location. Ideally, such videos
offer awareness and commendation and make effective treatments more widely known.

2.10 For the future researchers, this study may help them to understand better the
impacts of watching motivational vlogs to the academic performance of the students.
This may serve as guidelines of their research. The researchers recommended that they
find other impacts of watching motivational vlogs not just in terms of Academic
performance. Quigley (2013) states that, in watching Motivational Vlogs this encouraged
the employees to think about different ways to face challenges. For the future researchers,
this variable may use them for their study.
