Net Zero Energy

Energy Strategy – Net Zero Objective

• Make as much or more energy as the building uses over the

course of one year

• Solar and Geothermal as primary energy generators

• Factors are: Building envelope, Glass, Lighting, Shading,

IT load, Hours of use

• Energy Use Intensity (EUI ) as metric

How would we get there?
• Well Insulated, Non-drafty Building Envelope
• Smart Use of Glass (good daylight, limit heat gain)
• Energy Efficient Lighting (LED)
• Daylight Dimming & Motion Sensing Controls
• Every Efficient HVAC (geothermal, Water based Systems)
• Buy-in from Occupants ( Un-plug at night, open and close windows and
shades)
• Get Creative! (sewer system connected heat pumps? Using water for thermal
mass? Double walled sun room spaces?)
