ANGKAS

Ride-hailing apps have become a thing in our country. It made a significant effect
on how people commuted on a daily basis. In an urban area like Metro Manila, where
regular commuting is a hellish experience, locally founded Angkas has made a
significant impact by getting people from point A to point B quickly.

Angkas is a motorcycle-hailing platform that helps provide mobility for Filipinos

in one of the most traffic-congested countries in the world. It is a Filipino company
conceptualized by its Singaporean founder and CEO Angeline Tham. Angeline is not a
stranger when it comes to the tech industry. With her experience, she founded Angkas in
2016. It all started when she had to go to the Philippines for three meetings spread out
across Metro Manila. It took her six hours to get to all her meetings, and she was late to
all of them. As a result, she realized that traffic is a serious issue in the Philippines and
realized that there was an opportunity for something like Angkas.

This program has been downloaded over 4 million times and has a safety rating
of 99.99%. Angeline Tham, however, had to overcome numerous difficulties and
obstacles before reaching this level of achievement. The legality of Angkas was
questioned by the government in 2017. Because of a lack of a business permit and
safety concerns about the use of motorbikes in ridesharing services, the Land
Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) forced Angkas to cease their
operations. Tham, on the other hand, kindly apologized to the LTFRB and the public for
any trouble caused. They accept the measures that the government will take to regulate
new modes of transportation and are eager to learn more about the LTFRB's plans for
modernization and regulation. In addition, as a result of this incident, Angkas intends to
take this opportunity to launch a new type of service known as "Angkas Padala". It is a
roadside delivery service wherein the senders and recipients must meet the biker
outside to give and receive packages. Users may also use this through the Angkas app.

They manage their business operations by ensuring that they only have
high-quality bikers on board. They do this through background screening, safety training,
and exams. However, they are having difficulty shifting riders' attitudes toward being
friendly, well-trained, and self conscious. Also, prior to the COVID-19 virus, they were
extremely stringent with regard to health regulations. All of their bikers are PCR tested
on a regular basis and go through thorough health protocol training. They also
implement cashless payments, use of their own helmets, and the use of Angkas Shield
to help reduce the COVID-19 transmission.
Angkas provides safe, reliable, and affordable motorcycle transportation to its
users. There are also other services that are very beneficial to people. First is Angkas
Padala, where they make deliveries and take care of end to end parcel deliveries. Also,
the Angkas Pabili wherein if you need supplies but are unable to leave your house, a
trained biker would buy them for you and deliver them to you. There is also an Angkas
Home Service for RT-PCR COVID-19 saliva test, in which they collaborated with the
Philippine Red Cross to provide individuals with an affordable and convenient home
testing service.

With the platform, Angkas hopes to professionalize the habal-habal sector and
provide bikers the possibility to be their own entrepreneurs. Angeline Tham's personal
goal is to be able to train 14 million bikers in order to provide safe roads and provide
them with the opportunity to earn a living with dignity. So, aside from providing
convenience and safety to the passengers, they also look into the welfare of its drivers
by allowing them to earn a reasonable income for their needs. Drivers also have the
freedom to work on their own schedule, which allows them to spend their time with their
family or running personal errands. Furthermore, they are willing to welcome female
drivers as long as they have the necessary skills and attitudes.
