COURSE GUIDE

MPA 302
Statistical and Quantitative Techniques
in Public Administration

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will elucidate the concepts and applications of Statistics and
develop practical skills for summarizing, describing, and analyzing the data in a public
administration/policy setting. The focus is on the presentation and interpretation of
quantitative data. Samples from the General Social Survey (GSS) and the Office of
Personnel Management (OPM) to perform descriptive and inferential statistics will be
employed.

II. GENERAL / SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

After completing the course, students should be able to:

1. Use the basic concepts and tools of statistics to describe a phenomenon or event.
2. Estimate/make decisions about a population from sample statistics.
3. Determine the appropriate statistical method to use for the given kinds of
data/problem.
4. Formulate suitable hypothesis for a given problem with applicable statistical tests.
5. Present a research paper and come up with the right statistical tool and analysis.
