Guidelines:

Select a quantitative research study from a journal in the List of Park and
Recreation Journals (http://www.prm.nau.edu/prm447/journal-list.htm). The article must
be dated between 2016 and the present year. Each of you must have to select separate
article.

Note: If you use the Journal of Leisure Research just type in the name of the journal in the
keyword space, and a list of articles will come up, but be sure you select only an article
from the Journal of Leisure Research.

Be sure to select a study that can provide ALL of the required information! Do
not use a qualitative study!

Sample Practice Assignment: Read the Sample Research Study (An Exploratory

Answer: The purpose of this exploratory study was to apply the concept of serious leisure
to gain an understanding of how amateur athletes in a community setting integrate their
free-time interests with lifestyle. A secondary purpose was to investigate which
characteristics of serious leisure may identify the participants’ levels of dedication to
participation in an adult sport program.

3. What were the population size (a description and a number is required)? Note: Be aware you
may find a study were the population is also the sample. (Usually found in the Methodology
section).

Answer: Found in the Abstract and Methods Data Collection sections; a total of 252 surveys
were collected on site

4. How was the sample selected? What was the sample size (number)? (Usually found in the
Methodology section).

Answer: Found in the Methods Data Collection section; Research participants were selected by a
convenience sample to reach as many on-site respondents as possible. The sample size was 252.

5. Identify the data collection methodology and how was it distributed? (Usually found in the
Methodology section).

Answer: Found in the Methods Data Collection section; On-site surveys were handed out.
6. Identify the research design (Survey, Census, Pre-experimental; Quasi-experimental; or True
experimental design).

Answer: Pre-experimental

7. What was the response rate? (Usually found in the Methodology section).

Answer: For this convenience sample it was 100%

8. What statistical methods have been used here? Mention in details.

Answer: For basic demographic characteristics, statistical descriptive analysis has been done. For
comparing two related population means a paired t-test has been conducted.

9. What other statistical tools could be used to analyze such data?

Answer: Some graphs like bar plot, pie chart or box plot could be used to show demographic
data.
