Jan Ryan B. Capellan

INTRODUCTION

• Globalization is said to be a undeniable part of everyday

life
• We are said to be living in a “global age”;
• Where mass media serves as a bridge
WHAT IS GLOBALIZATION?

• Some link it to progress, development and integration

• Distances are shortened, things move closer, leading to
mutual benefit
• Others say it is linked to regression, colonialism and
destabilization.
• Martin khor once regarded globalization as colonization
WHAT IS GLOBALIZATION?

• Globalization is the process of international integration

arising from the interchange of world views, products, ideas
and culture
• Advances in transportation, telecommunications,
infrastructure, including the rise of the internet are major
factors in globalization
WHAT IS GLOBALIZATION?

• Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines globalization as

• “the act or process of of globalizing: The state of being
globalized especially: the development of an increasingly
integrated global economy marked especially by free trade,
free flow of capital, and the tapping of cheaper foreign
labor markets.”
TWO CLASSIFICATIONS OF
DEFINITIONS

• Broad and Inclusive

• Narrow and Exclusive
BROAD AND INCLUSIVE

• These definitions can include a variety of issues dealing

with overcoming traditional boundaries
• It is however more vague.
• Ohmae’s definition stated that “globalization is the onset of
the borderless world” falls under this category
NARROW AND EXCLUSIVE

• Narrow and Exclusive definitions are more easily justified

• But they are seen as more limiting
NARROW AND EXCLUSIVE

• Cox’s definition best suits this “the characteristics of the

globalization trend include the internationalization of
production, new international division of labor, new
migratory movements from south to north, the new
competitive environment that accelerates these processes,
and the internationalizing of the state…making states into
agencies of globalizing world”
SOLID

• Solids or solidity are barriers which prevent or make

movement difficult
• This includes man made barriers as well as natural barriers
• Have a tendency to melt
LIQUID

• Refers to the increasing ease of movement of people,

things, information, and places in the world
• Continuous fluctuation
• Tends to melt whatever is in its paths(especially solids)
FLOWS
