1. What were the major contributions of Samuel Morse to electric telegraphy? (2 marks,
maximum 40 words)
Ans.) Samuel Morse invented Electric Telegraph and also the Morse Code. The
messages that were sent through the electric telegraph were sent in the form of Morse
Code and the electric telegraph made communication faster and efficient.

2. Which was the first invention which made the speed of communicating messages over
a very long distance significantly faster than the speed of locomotion? (2 marks,
maximum 40 words)
Ans.) Electric telegraph was the first invention that made the process of communicating
messages faster than the speed of locomotion. It enabled people living very large distance
from each other to send messages in very less time and efficiently.

3. What is Johnsonese? (2 marks, maximum 40 words)


Ans.) Johnsonese refers to an elaborate literary style in English that is characterised by
use of a number of long words of Latin origin and an extravagant physiology. The
sentences should be savoured slowly to understand.
4. Mention two characteristic features of Ernest Hemingway’s telegraph-inspired prose
style. (4 marks, maximum 80 words)
Ans.) Two characteristic features of Hemingway’s telegraph-inspired prose style are-
a) The vocabulary used by him was simple everyday words, the lack of long and
difficult words makes it more lucid.
b) His prose style consisted by completely nouns and verbs, adjectives and adverbs
are almost absent.
All the long sentences that Hemingway used were constructed by conglomeration
of very short sentences that were glued together by simple conjunctions (e.g. But,
and, etc.)
