Filipino Inventions and Discoveries and Its Impact to Philippine Economy

Invention/Discovery No. 1
Invention/Discovery Inventor

Name of Invention Alternating Current Induction Motor

Name of Inventor Nikola Tesla
Year of Invention 1888
Historical It is an electric motor powered by electric current. The
Background/Literature motor consists of two basic parts, namely: outside stator and
about the Invention inside rotor. The former having coils to produce rotating
magnetic field and the latter producing a second magnetic field.

The technology was based in Faraday’s discovery that

magnetic fields can induce electric current in a circuit. With this,
the experiment to use such principles were used by Tesla, hence,
the invention of electric current.

Tesla built induction motor in 1885 and made a

demonstration at the American Institute of Electrical Engineers.
In subsequent years, Tesla was granted a US patent for his
invention.
Contribution(s) for the Globally speaking, alternating current is the current choice
country's development of the world because of its advantages. In commercial areas,
devices (using direct current) has adapters so that it can AC to
DC.

Machineries such as those that are used in the

manufacturing industry operates using alternating current
because of its reliable characteristics distinct from its counterpart
(DC).

Invention/Discovery No. 2
Invention/Discovery Inventor
Name of Invention Light Bulb
Name of Inventor Thomas Edison
Year of Invention 1879
Historical Edison’s lightbulb consisted of a filament contained in a
Background/Literature glass bulb. He was trying to come up with a high resistance
about the Invention system requiring less electrical power that used for arc lamps.
Hence, its suitability for home use.

He began carbonizing materials for it to be used as

filament. Contacted biologists for information of plant fibers.
Carbonized cotton thread filament. When voltage was applied to
the completed bulb, it began to radiate a light orange glow.

Edison lamp (lightbulb) is dated January 1880. The same is

a product of the continued improvements to the 1987 bulb. In
early 1880, Edison planned the construction of the first
commercial electric power in New York City.
Contribution(s) for the Light bulb contributed by making it possible for people to
country's development work and do their respective chores or even jobs after sundown,
it extended the workday well into the night.

It also allowed people to travel during night time. Since the

man-made fires and lamps which also used fires, the electric light
bulb has been one of the most important inventions.

Invention/Discovery No. 3
Invention Inventor
Name of Invention Carbon Nanotubes
Name of Inventor Sumio Iijima
Year of Invention 1991
Historical Carbon nanotubes are tube-like materials made of carbon.
Background/Literature They are revolutionary for materials. It is measured in a nanometer
about the Invention scale which is about 10,000 thinner than a human hair.

Carbon nanotubes are best for its durability because they are
more sturdy molecular bonds. They have one-sixth the weight of
steel and have a high aspect ratio, hence, it is valuable as
mechanical property for manufacturing.
Contribution(s) for the Since the discovery of nanotubes, nanoscience emerged. It is
country's development a new branch of knowledge in materials science. It is said that
hundreds of millions were invested to attain such innovation.

The uniqueness and its durability it was used for application

sin energy storage, device modelling, automotive parts, boat hulls,
electromagnetic fields, etc.

Invention/Discovery No. 4
Discovery Inventor

Name of Invention Radium

Name of Inventor Marie and Pierre Curie
Year of Invention 1898
Historical After the discovery of radium in 1898, the successful
Background/Literature extraction of 1 mg of radium from ten tonnes of uranium ore is
about the Invention subsequently made. It was considered a feat because methods used
in the separation were not that easy and was quite complex.

After the extraction, experiments were made and that they

have concluded that the extracted part was a new element because
its atomic spectrum revealed new lines.

Samples glowed with faint blue light which was caused by

intense radioactivity surrounding it. The metal was then isolated
through electrolysis of radium chloride for safety.
Contribution(s) for the Its discovery was regarded as a fundamental change in
country's development scientist’s understanding of radioactivity. It also revolutionized the
field of chemistry. Chemists regarded the extraction of radium
from uranium ore as a greatest event since the discovery of
oxygen.

Because of the further understanding of radioactivity,

contemporary radiological interventions such as sonothrombolytic
therapy for ischemic stroke was made.

Invention/Discovery No. 5
Invention Inventor

Name of Invention Telegraph

Name of Inventor Samuel Morse
Year of Invention 1840
Historical Developed in the 1940s. It operated by transmitting electrical
Background/Literature signals over a wire laid between stations. Furthermore, in aid to
about the Invention invent telegraph, the inventor developed a code (morse code) that
assigned a set of dots and dashed to each letter of the English
alphabet for complex (encrypted) messages.

In 1884, the inventor sent the first message by telegraph

from Washington DC to Baltimore Maryland. The telegraph line
had been laid across Atlantic Ocean from the US to Europe in
1866.
Contribution(s) for the Because of transmitting electrical signals, long distance
country's development communication was revolutionized. Although with limited traits,
telegraph expanded the business possibilities and made the work
of professions more time bound.

It was then the basis for people to invest time and effort to
improve such method (long distance communication) thereby
inventing telephones and the internet subsequently.
