Q1. Why were the earliest people on the move? (3m)
Ans. The earliest people were hunters and gatherers, who were required to be quick and have
presence of mind. They moved because-
• They went in search of food once the available animal and plants resources had
exhausted, they moved.
• As animals too moved in search of food and water, people had to follow their
movements.
• Plants bear fruits in different seasons, so people may have moved season to
season in search of different kinds of plants.
• People living near the banks moved in search of water during the dry seasons.
Q2. Why do people who grow crops have to stay in the same place for a long time? (2m)
Ans. When people began growing plants/crops, it meant that they had to stay in the same
place for a long time looking after the plants, watering, weeding, driving away animals and
birds-till the grain ripened and then, the grain had to be used carefully.
Q3. Why do archaeologists think that many people who lived in Mehrgarh were hunters to
start with and herding became more important later? (2m)
Ans. I. Archaeologists who excavated the site found evidence of many kinds of animal
bones from the earliest levels, these included bones of wild animals such as deer and
pig.
2.They also found more bones of sheep, goats and cattle’s suggesting most common
animals that were kept by the people.
Q4. Name one of the most famous Neolithic site and explain what was found there? (1/2+1.5)
Ans. One of the most famous Neolithic sites, Catal Huyuk was found in Turkey.
Several things found were bought from great distances -
• flint from Syria
• cowries from the Red sea
• shells from the Mediterranean Sea-and used in the settlements.
Q5. List three ways in which the lives of farmers and herders would have been different from
that of hunter-gatherers. (3m)
Ans. The lives of farmers and herders would have been different from that of the hunter-
gatherers in the following ways-
• Hunter -gatherers kept travelling from one place to another, whereas farmers and
herders had to live in the same place for a longer time to take care of their crops and
animals.
• Hunter -gatherers depended on meat of wild animals whereas farmers and herders
used plants crops and cattle.
• Hunter-gatherers did not have a settled lives whereas farmers and herders gradually
settled in huts, pit houses etc.
