Course Description:

This course has been framed to enable the students to find out the type of plastics,
similarities and dissimilarities based on various observation and testing methodologies

Objective:

The course will help the participants to gain knowledge about various types of plastics
available like commercial plastics, special plastics, biodegradable etc. in addition to that
the students can able to identify its type by various methods like burning test, cutting
test, floatation test, bending test, dropping test, solubility test.

SYLLABUS

IDENTIFICATION OF PLASTICS

OBJECTIVE:

 To train the student to identify plastics by different methods

UNIT-I 6 Hours

Identification of polymers by simple methods like density, melting point, burning characteristics, solubility and
confirmatory test by chemical analysis – Polyethylene - Polypropylene – Polystyrene

UNIT-II 6 Hours

Identification of polymers by simple methods like density, melting point, burning characteristics, solubility and
confirmatory test by chemical analysis – Polyvinyl Chloride – Polyamide - Polyethylene terephthalate
Polybutylene terephthalate

UNIT-III 6 Hours

Identification of polymers by simple methods like density, melting point, burning characteristics, solubility and
confirmatory test by chemical analysis – Polycarbonate – Polyacetal

UNIT-IV 6 Hours

Identification of polymers by simple methods like density, melting point, burning characteristics, solubility and
confirmatory test by chemical analysis – Polyphenylene oxide - Polyphenylene sulphide

UNIT-V 6 Hours

Identification of polymers by simple methods like density, melting point, burning characteristics, solubility and
confirmatory test by chemical analysis – Phenol Formaldehyde resin - Urea formaldehyde resin - Melamine
formaldehyde resin

Total Periods – 30 Hours

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to
