ABSTRACT
This study examines the impact of the recent oil price hike on the income and work
patterns of Foodpanda riders in Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu, and Cebu City. Data was collected
through interviews with a sample 28 Riders in Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu, and Cebu City The
findings suggest that the increase in oil prices had a significant effect on the riders' income,
with many experiencing a decline in earnings due to higher fuel costs. Additionally, the study
found that riders had to adjust their work patterns, including the number of hours worked and
the areas covered in response to the rise in fuel prices. The study concludes by highlighting
the need for policies that can lighten the effects of oil price irregularity on the livelihoods of
Foodpanda riders.

Chapter I
The researchers focused on the current oil price increase problem because it
affects delivery riders' livelihoods. Moreover, the researchers would want to delve deeper
into the current situation that the Foodpanda drivers are in with their company and the
people they have worked with. This study aims to recognize the effects of the ongoing oil
price hike on delivery riders mainly those from Foodpanda. An increase in the price of
crude oil means it would increase the cost of manufacturing goods. While some can still
cope and ride the price hike wave as global oil prices affect other goods and necessities,
ordinary and working Filipinos bear the burden of inflation and rising food and necessities
prices. As the price of fuel has an impact on businesses, fuel price increases will
eventually cause transportation prices to rise which means that goods being transported by
road will now cost more. Employees who travel to work will be affected by the increase in
fuel prices as well. The researchers want to know how the recent crisis has harmed them in
their daily lives. As for why we chose Foodpanda over other delivery services, Elluminati
Inc., (n.d) stated in an article about Foodpanda's revenue model that the platform offers
and cost reduction. Foodpanda makes food stores more accessible by allowing them to
market their products to customers who do not want to visit a physical location and have
The topic of oil price hike affects vehicle owners and most especially those who
rely on vehicles to make a living. Recognizing such problems can help individuals
2
understand why such problems exist and it can help them come up with personal strategies
to combat the problem. It also provides them the initiative to brace for unforeseeable
changes in oil prices. Individuals such as jeepney drivers and food delivery riders are the
most affected by the drastic increase in oil prices, especially during the first double-digit
increase in the cost of gasoline that happened on March 15, 2022, in the Philippines. This
topic can help in determining how businesses were affected before, during, and after the
pandemic; and how delivery services were able to contribute to these businesses to
continue to thrive and generate revenue. This topic also shows the need for activism and
In a statement, the online delivery firm said the welfare of their delivery partners is
their top concern, acknowledging they all continue to face the fuel and inflation crisis
(Masculino, 2022). The government sought to provide targeted assistance to sectors affected
by the fuel price hikes, such as implementing the Pantawid Pasada Program which distributes
fuel cards to subsidize the public transportation sector and a direct cash subsidy program
under the "Bayanihan to Recover as One A\ ct 2", which expired in end 2021. Domestic oil
firms announced yet another round of fuel price hikes driven by tight global supply. Gasoline
rose by P0.9 per liter, diesel increased by P0.8 per liter and kerosene went up by P0.75 per
liter for the ninth straight week of 2022. Online food delivery service Foodpanda Philippines
(Foodpanda) said it continues to ramp up its efforts to cushion the impact of rising gas prices
(Yang, 2022) as of my idea on this research this is already known major trouble of the
community, mostly into a food delivery (Foodpanda), increasing of oil/gas due to the
inflationary environment.
The researchers have learned from online articles that Foodpanda riders were affected
by the oil price hike. For this reason, the riders may experience a lack in their daily income
that may result in them not being able to provide for their own and family's needs. Based on
3
the researcher's initial review of literature, no recent study has been found that is focused on
how the oil price hike affected the Food Panda riders. The proposed research seeks to answer
how the oil price hike affects the Food Panda rider's daily income and daily experiences. The
researchers aim to determine if their income was sufficient for their needs, if they were able
to set aside money for savings if they receive incentives from the Food Panda company for
working overtime, and if working overtime would secure them their desired daily income.
As gas prices rise, small companies are particularly rephrased. President Biden put a
restriction on Russian oil imports to the United States in response to Russia's invasion of
Ukraine. However, due to increased demand, gas prices had been rising in the US long before
Biden was elected president. According to a widely used inflation indicator, 7% of U.S.
spending on energy was used in December 2021. Index of Consumer Prices (CPI). Gas costs
have an impact on small companies because customers would stop spending on other things if
a larger amount of their income went toward filling up their tanks. The hardest-hit industries
include those in building, transportation, maintenance, and deliveries. To help maintain their
profit level and to keep up with the rising cost of gas, these firms will be the first to impose
additional fees in exchange for their services. If not, companies like delivery services could
The growth of internet food delivery services has had a considerable impact on the
traditional offline restaurant industry. This is a result of the internet's capacity for
communication and information sharing, which many users find convenient. This important
study from Lipa suggests the convenience of routinely ordering food online, Batangas, titled
"Food Delivery Services: A Study of Impacts on Consumers in Lipa City, Batangas”. The rise
in gas prices will affect delivery services, which will influence average shipping rates for
Rising oil prices have an impact on the rest of the economy as well as Filipino
households. Oil prices influence the prices of commodities. There is less money available for
a family to spend when commodity prices are high and household incomes are stable. Due to
higher than typical delivery fees, many potential customers could be reluctant to use delivery
services. If inflation keeps rising, suggested retail prices (SRPs) may change in the future. It
will also have an impact on fare rates if inflation keeps rising. This means that persistently
high oil prices would have an impact on the economy's overall expansion since they increase
As per Michael Beltran (2022), he interviewed Diosdado Mesa, a jeepney driver from
Manila. "We just want prices to go back to the way they were before," Mesa said. Over a
12-hour shift, he used to earn 600 Philippine peso but he takes home half or less of that
amount now. The jeepney drivers and operator union who initiated the strike said that the
soaring prices is a "national calamity". The first to strike on March 21 was the jeepney
drivers in Bacolod City and the surrounding municipalities in Negros Occidental Province.
The surge in global oil prices was triggered by the Ukraine war, according to The Department
of Energy (DOE). The first double-digit increase in gasoline happened on March 15 in the
Philippines. The prices of diesel per liter rose to 13.15 pesos, and 7.10 pesos for gasoline.
The administration of President Rodrigo Duterte since 2017 has progressively increased
excise taxes wherein they add 10 pesos onto a liter of gasoline, and 6 onto diesel, also adding
12% of VAT to the total cost. Since the recent price hike, fuel subsidies of 2.5 billion pesos
for PUV drivers has been announced by the government. Duterte pledged financial aid of 200
pesos monthly for 12 million households till the end of the year. Floranda voiced out that it's
only 6.60 pesos per day and it is not enough for a single jeepney ride. In response to the
criticism, Duterte raised the monthly aid to 500 pesos. Krista Yu, a specialist in transport and

The purpose of this study is to look into the impact of the recent increase in oil prices
on delivery riders mainly the food panda riders. The researcher's objective is to be as simple
as possible while giving all the necessary information. In addition, the researchers will
examine the consequences of their findings. The price of oil has increased drastically last
year, and this made a significant impact on the economy. The cost of transportation, goods,
and services has gone up, which has affected both the general population and businesses. This
paper will explore the effects of the oil price hike on these two groups and discuss possible
solutions. In addition, the oil price hike has been having a negative effect on local businesses
and delivery services. This is since the cost of goods and services have increased, which has
led to a decrease in revenue. This decrease in revenue has caused several businesses to close
their doors and has even led to some delivery services ceasing operations. Often, when goods
become more expensive, inflation comes with it, as long as other prices do not fall too
revenue. The everyday awareness of families and industry leaders is drawn significantly by
This study aims to analyze the effects and articulate the experiences of the food panda
delivery riders to the current oil price hike. The study seeks to address the following
concerns:

Scope of the Study- The primary participants of this research study will cover the
Food Panda riders particularly in Mandaue City. The goal of this study is to discover and
understand the struggles that the oil price hike brought to the daily lives of the Food Panda
riders. In addition, it is also our goal to determine if they also gained benefits and motivation
throughout the crisis. The scope of this study will be limited to 5-29 participants depending
on the saturation of the data that is being collected. The study does not include the
researchers to provide solutions for the problems that the participants share mainly because
this study only aims to determine the life experiences of the participants to share awareness
towards the society to prove that Food Panda delivery riders of Mandaue City, Cebu are one
Limitations of the Study- Similar studies the researchers have encountered have
predominantly shown how their study also has limitations in terms of the locale factor. The
researchers have interviewed some Foodpanda riders that are based in the tri-city of Cebu.
This is to have accurate data and to be fair to other Foodpanda riders as well. To gather our
data the researchers interviewed about 30 people all over the tri-city. The researchers are
limited to the Foodpanda rider the researchers interviewed on the grounds that the researchers
do data saturation that ensures that the collection of the data is adequate. The locale is an
inevitable factor that requires limitations when manpower is not enough to handle an entire
province to be interviewed. The researchers considered the places where Foodpanda riders
are usually on standby or on their breaks. This study focuses solely on the Foodpanda riders.
The researchers are careful in gathering data that is only applicable to our study therefore,
The researchers only interview Foodpanda riders that are not associated with other food
delivery apps. Thus far the researchers carried out gathering data and did not undergo any
issues in spite of the fact that the researchers needed specific requirements to continue this
study.

Food delivery services charge minimal delivery fees to cover transportation and

you go to the mall or restaurant to pick up your order, endangering your health and increasing
your chances of contracting the virus. During this pandemic, the growing demand for food

who are classified as independent contractors, or view these riders as business partners. As a
result, employers are not required to provide minimum wages, healthcare benefits, or other

As you might clearly recall, January 2018 marked the beginning of the fuel price surge,
in the name of the government’s TRAIN law. In the data generated by DOE, the average
prices before January 2018 ends reached P 51.47 for unleaded and P41.55 for diesel, which
are the most commonly pumped fuel. These were mowed down a bit in February but the
relief wasn’t for long. From March, prices began increasing until we reached June – one of
the three months where fuel prices are in their highest. The other two months where prices
are at their peak level were September and October. The price for the unleaded gasoline

According to Jonathan Keane and Jakob Angeli, (2020) the CEO of Foodpanda, as
restrictions gradually ease around several of the 12 Asian markets in which Foodpanda
operates, the question of how to maintain that momentum remains. "We gathered a lot of data
points on that, and all of those 12 countries are at different stages. In some countries, the
Covid situation is still very severe, and in others, it's almost back to normal, with some
restrictions," Angele explained. Regardless of the options for food delivery, restaurants are
still struggling during the pandemic. Foodpanda deferred payments for some restaurants to
help them get through difficult times. It speaks to a problem that will persist for restaurants in
the long run if restrictions on dining in remain in place and restaurants rely solely on delivery.
According to Mai Ono (2022), customers in the past would typically call restaurants to
order food. But as technology evolved, it is now easier for customers to buy foods and drinks

main selling point is their speed while Food Panda is its wide delivery radius and its

about Food Panda is that it frequently provides coupons and deals for loyal customers. The

METHODOLOGY
Research Design
Phenomenology is the most effective way to achieve a precise answer from the participants.
The researchers will use the “Colaizzi’s 7 steps method” research tool for data analysis in
order to analyze the information gathered or the given data. The researchers adopted this
design to identify the experiences provided by the participants on how the oil price hike will
affect them. The research design is ideal specifically since the researchers wish to examine its
consequences.
Research Locale
The research will be carried out in the surrounding area of any fast-food chain
restaurants or local food enterprises located in the tri-city of Cebu: Lapu-lapu, Mandaue, and
Cebu City. The survey will be administered to the respondents during their leisure time or
Research Instruments
This study's primary tool for data collection is a structured interview, which is more
effective for collecting qualitative data. Participants will be asked a series of questions during
the interview. It will be printed on bond paper and placed in a white folder. The audio
recorder on the phone will capture all of the information provided by the participants.
Alternatively, while recording, the researchers will take down relevant keywords and
information. The objective of the voice recording is for researchers to review participant

Before the collection of data, the researchers will formulate their questions for
conducting the structured interview. After formulating the questions, the researchers will
consult 3 experts and ask for the expert's approval regarding the formulated questions. Once
approved, the researchers can now proceed with the collection of data. During the collection
of data, the researchers must ask the participant first if they are willing to partake in their
study within an approximate allotted time and if they are in their spare time. If the participant
wishes otherwise, the researchers must proceed to another participant. However, if the
participant agrees, the researchers will introduce themselves and state their purpose of the
interview. The researchers will reassure the participants that all their vital information will be
kept confidential. As the interview starts, the researchers will jot down the answers of the
participants and if the participant agrees, the researchers will also be using a recording
device. The interview will be for 5-29 participants depending on the saturation of data. After
the collection of data, the researchers will begin with analyzing and rereading the collected
data in order to sort and differentiate the data provided by the participants to be included in
the study. After the interview, the researchers will be using the Colaizzi's 7-step method of
transcription. A table will be utilized to input the participant's data on the following:
The collected data will undergo proper phenomenological analysis. In this case, the
data will be analyzed using a modified Colaizzi’s 7 steps method of data analysis. According

Data Analysis
This chapter presents the data that the researchers have collected from the conducted
interviews. The data were analyzed with the use of Colaizzi’s 7-step method of Data analysis
(Praveena & Sasikumar, 2021) which had already been discussed in the methodology chapter.
With the use of these steps, the researchers were able to thoroughly examine the data
and create emergent themes from the cluster themes in the data set. The researchers believed
that this made it convenient for them to classify themes and organize patterns accordingly.

The findings of our study shows the experiences, challenges, and how the Foodpanda
riders manage the challenges during the oil price hike. The experiences that Foodpanda riders
have encountered are the traffic, canceling of order, waiting for the customers to order, and
budgeting their money. The challenges they encountered included financial hardship, health,
and safety concerns, stress, unstable market pricing, and managing client behavior and
satisfaction. They manage those challenges through incentives, an increase in their delivery
charge, their own intrinsic motivation, and work satisfaction and persistence.

prices has had a significant impact on the daily lives of individuals working in the gig
economy. Food delivery riders, in particular, have been affected by the rising cost of fuel,
which has raised questions about their ability to earn a sustainable income and save money.
This research analysis section will provide a detailed examination of our findings.
Analysis on the Experiences of Food Panda Riders in Light of the Recent Fluctuations
in Oil Prices
The recent fluctuations in oil prices have had a significant impact on individuals
working in the gig economy, particularly food delivery riders who rely heavily on their
motorcycles to carry out their jobs, as mentioned in an interview with our participant L8

consuming gasoline. In fact, idling in traffic can actually use up more gasoline than if the
motorcycle were moving at a steady speed. This is because when the motorcycle is idling, the

engine is working harder to keep the motorcycle running while it is stationary. This can result
in a higher fuel consumption rate and, in turn, can lead to increased costs for the Foodpanda

Analysis on the challenges faced by Foodpanda Riders during the oil price hike
Food delivery has become an essential service for many people in today's fast-paced
world. With the rise of online food delivery platforms like Foodpanda, more and more people
are relying on these services to order food from their favorite restaurants. However, the recent
hike in oil prices has posed a significant challenge for Foodpanda riders, who have to cover
more distances while making deliveries, leading to increased expenses. In this analysis, the
researchers will explore the challenges faced by Foodpanda riders during the oil price hike
and the impact it has on their earnings and overall work experience, majority of foodpanda
riders' budgeting process was put to the test during the surge in gasoline prices supported by
one of the riders the researchers have interviewed participant C6 and M4:

“wala kanang, like sauna nga barato pa among budget kay 100 ra ang gas

The oil price hike not only tested their budgeting skill, but also impacted their income

As the global oil prices continue to surge, it has caused a ripple effect on the
economy, with basic commodities becoming more expensive. Food delivery services, such as
Foodpanda, have not been spared from the impact of the price hike. In order to offset the
rising costs, Foodpanda had no choice but to increase its delivery fees, which unfortunately
caused a drop in app usage as many customers found it more expensive to order food through
the app.

One of the strategies that they have considered to reduce their gasoline consumption
due to the high prices is to avoid unnecessary driving when they do not have any bookings
scheduled. This means refraining from roaming aimlessly to save fuel and reduce expenses.
By doing so, they can prioritize their work duties and ensure that they are only using gasoline
for essential tasks, leading to a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach.
This strategy would require discipline and planning, but it could potentially lead to significant
savings in the long run, this strategy was quoted by the majority of the riders, specifically

The recent surge in oil prices has presented significant challenges for Foodpanda riders, who
rely heavily on their motorcycles to carry out their jobs. In addition to the financial burden,
riders are also dealing with traffic-related issues that further exacerbate their gasoline
consumption. To address this problem, riders have developed alternative methods to reduce
fuel consumption, including finding alternative routes and only idling when necessary.
However, the oil price hike has also impacted their income as customers have reduced their
usage of the app due to increased delivery fees. In response, one strategy that riders have

In this section, the researchers present a synthesis of the results that the researchers
have formulated. The study uses a qualitative approach to gain insights into the experiences
of the riders and their coping mechanisms in response to the oil price hike. By examining the
challenges and strategies adopted by Foodpanda riders, this study provides valuable insights
into the impact of the oil price hike on the gig economy and the potential solutions to address

charge, their own intrinsic motivation, and work satisfaction and persistence.
The study highlights the significant challenges that Foodpanda riders face due to the
recent surge in oil prices. These challenges include not only the financial burden but also
traffic-related issues that further exacerbate their gasoline consumption. However, riders have
routes and only idling when necessary. Despite these efforts, the oil price hike has negatively
impacted their income, as customers have reduced their usage of the app due to increased
delivery fees.
The study also reveals that riders have considered a strategy of avoiding unnecessary
driving when no bookings are scheduled. This approach could lead to a more cost-effective
and environmentally friendly approach to food delivery. These findings have significant
implications for policy interventions and technological solutions to address the challenges
faced by gig economy workers, particularly food delivery riders who heavily rely on
motorcycles.
Discussion of Findings
The finding that the recent surge in oil prices has presented significant challenges for
Foodpanda riders highlights the impact of external factors on gig economy workers. This
finding indicates that the fluctuation of oil prices can have a significant impact on the
financial stability of Foodpanda riders, who rely heavily on their motorcycles for work. The
findings also suggest that the oil price surge has not only led to financial burdens for
35
Foodpanda riders but has also affected their working conditions, specifically regarding
traffic-related issues. The study found that riders have developed alternative methods to
reduce fuel consumption, such as finding alternative routes and only idling when necessary.
This finding suggests that Foodpanda riders are actively finding ways to minimize the impact
of oil price increases on their income and work efficiency. However, the study also found that
the oil price hike has led to a reduction in customer usage of the app due to increased delivery
fees, which has negatively impacted riders' income. This finding indicates that external
factors such as oil prices can have a ripple effect on the gig economy, impacting the demand
for services and ultimately affecting the livelihoods of gig workers. To mitigate the impact of
the oil price surge, the study found that riders have considered avoiding unnecessary driving
when no bookings are scheduled. This finding suggests that riders are proactively seeking
ways to improve their work efficiency while also adopting more environmentally friendly
practices. Overall, this study's findings highlight the challenges faced by Foodpanda riders in
response to the recent surge in oil prices. After the analysis found that there is a significant

resulting from escalating oil prices. Through our analysis, the researchers discovered that the
increased costs of fuel directly impact the riders' earnings, overall job satisfaction, and work
performance. In turn, this may affect the company's attractiveness to potential riders and
customer experience. It is crucial for Foodpanda, as well as other similar delivery services, to
consider mitigating strategies such as fuel cost allowances, and efficient route planning to
support their riders during these challenging times. This would not only help maintain a
motivated workforce but also ensure sustainability and a competitive edge for the company in

Interviewer 3: Kung wala kay orders maabot or booking kuya unsa imo buhaton?

earner
Interviewer 3: unsa may epekto sa pagtaas sa gas sa imong daily expenses kuya?
Participant 4: wala kanang, like sauna nga barato pa among budget kay 100 ra ang
permanente so mao gihapon kas ug gasolina gihapon kay traffic.
pang gas. So if mo biyahe ka naa kay customer maka provide ka pang
gas nimo
56
Interviewer 3: Kung wala kay orders maabot or booking kuya unsa imo buhaton?

mo mahal man sad ang palitonon. So kuan ra 50-50 ra sa
Interviewer 3: Despite sa mga kalisud of being a foodpanda rider, unsa may naka
padayun nimo kuya?
Participant 4: Kuan wala man koy lain trabaho mao ra man akong source of income

flat, mag ulan inana. Mao raman jud nay kasagaran namo.
Participant 5: Motivation lang is mag kugi lang jud. Para raman sad ni sa atong
kaugmaon man sad.
Interviewer 3: Og imong e compare ang gas price sauna og karon, like unsa imo
masulti?
Participant 5: Kung sauna, gamay koan ra gyud mas barato sauna kontra karon.
Participant 5: Nagpadayon nako is... akoang pamilya para naay ika hatag.

gamay kaysa sauna nya ang gas mahal.
Interviewer 3: Nya naa na ta sa among closing questions kuya, duha nalang kabuok.

og deliver dayun mao rato.
Participant 7: Wala.
Interviewer 3: Kung wala kay orders maabot or booking, unsa man imong buhaton
ya?
Participant 7: Koan kanang, wala raman mao raman to. Mao raman na ang problema
namo ang pagasolina raman.
Interviewer 3: Og imong e compare ang gas price sauna og karon, unsa imong masulti
kuya?

Mandaue City #8
Participant 8: adeline
Participant 8: 31
Interviewer 2: then how long have you been working naman as a foodpanda rider?
Participant 8: 3 years
Interviewer 2: mag start namis among interview question, first is unsa imong reaction
Participant 8: kanang…. Kuan…. Ang pagsaka sa gas? Experience nako? Wala man
raman sa akoa kay the same the same raman akong gas taga adlaw
Participant 8: like gas, mga kaon. Budget kag mga 500 per day. Sa expenses nimo.
Dala nana sa gas. Sa katong wapa nisaka, mga 400 lang siguro
Interviewer 2: then, giunsa pagka apekto nimo as a foodpand rider ang traffic?
Participant 8: chill chill lang. Wala raman. Epekto nako? Dili raman kayo kusog
mukaon ang gasolina sa akong motor
Participant 8: kuan lang kanang kuan, unsa ganing tawag anang discount , discount.
Oo discount, sa shell lang
Interviewer 2: so wala man sila ni provide ug gas allowances sa, unsa imong gibuhat
para mataplan ang imohang gastusin sa gas
Participant 8: kuan oy, magkugi kog byahe, mag accept lang kog orders
Interviewer 2: then next question is, if wala kay orders ma receive, unsa raman imong
gibuhat?
store.
cancellation
Interviewer 2: And then, next question, kay unsang mga benefits imong na receive as
a foodpanda rider?
Participant 8: kuan man gud nakatabang gud siya, nakatabang gud sya like kanang
mapalit na nako ang dili nako mapalit before sa katong nag work pako
sa minimum wage.
Interviewer 2: then next question, unsa may motivation nimo as a foodpanda rider,
nganong nipadayon man ka?
Participant 8: aw kuan kanang motivation nako, akong igsoon.
Interviewer 2: then last question, if imong I compare ang pagsaka sa gasolina sauna
Interviewer 2: unya katong pagsaka gud tungod atong Odette, unya gera pagud, kato
na time te unsa man?
Participant 8: so bale diba, pandemic to, 2 months rato ako pahuway sa pandemic,
ani duty unya balik rapud ko after 2 months.
Interviewer 2: unya last question ate, unsa may ganahan nimo mausab para maka
benepisyo sa inyoha
Participant 8: kuan, mas more booking, mas dako dakoon ang plete unya kanang
average minimum wage sa delivery ba kay by distance dapat. Mao na
mas maayo. Mao ra?
Mandaue City #9
Participant 9: Oo
Participant 9: Cyril
Interviewer 2: How long have you been working as Food Panda rider?
Participant 9: Hmm
Interviewer 2: So, first question kuya, unsa imong reaction katong ni kalit og saka ang
gasoline kuya?
67
mag pareha, so ang amoa ato if ma kuan gyud mi ato ma apektuhan sad
gyud mi ato kay kanang dako pud kog kuan ba dili stable ang plitehan
sa amoa so mao to nga katong higayuna kanang mao na if among
Participant 9: Ha?
Interviewer 2: unsa imong na experience tong oras nga ni saka ang gasolina as a food
panda rider?
everyday na gasolina nako is 100 pesos per day nalang para dili kaayo
enjoy gyud nako ba, labi nag ma encounter kas imong mg amigo, lahi
manarbaho kag companya is minimum man so is kaning amoa og
amoa so mo lapas mig above minimum gyud
Interviewer 2: Ahhhh
Interviewer 2: Then, next question kuya, kay, how does traffic affect you as a food
panda rider? relating sa imong gas ba
Participant 9: Aww okay, so kanang ing ana, everytime mag traffic traffic, so kanang
mag sige biya na syag andar biya, so kami mangita mi og way nga
kana bitawng pangitaan gyud og kanang initiative nalang gyud nimo
asa ka dapita dili kaayo traffic pero karon man gud is traffic gyud
sa gas gyud namo oy nga mo hatag sila og tag 3,500 to ba nya mao to
3,500 biya, mayo nalang unta ba, So wala, ako wala man ko kadawat
ato so ang uban nakadawt pero gamay rajud.
Interviewer 2: Nya if No kuya wala man ka kadawat sa? Unsa man imong gi buhat
para ma taplan ang imong pang gas?
Participant 9: Ah, sa akoa kay wala ra, haha, wala nalang nako gi mind kong, bahala
wala nalng nako gi kuan oy kung nsa to ilang gi hatag na offer,
padayon nalang nako akong trabaho
Interviewer 2: nya next question kuya kay, if di ka maka receive og orders kuya, unsa
man imong buhat?,what do you usually do?
Interviewer 2: agad-agad
Participant 9: Oh, if daghan mo diri dugay gyud ka masudlan kay daghan man mo,
So ang amoa lang is maka encounter jud mig kana
bitawng customer pud nga dugay kaayo mo gawas nya labi nag init
kaayo nya wala mi masilongan, so mao na nga mao na ing ana among
gud suklan ang customer man gud kuyaw man sad pog I report ka nila,
bahala nalang og mag kina unsa kay madaot man ang trabaho, mao ra
Interviewer 2: Kasuway sad ka og cancelled orders kuya nya layo kaayo kag gi
byahian? In ana?
Participant 9: Oh kasuway kog cancelled orders, so utong nalang gyud ka kay wala
man kay laing mahimo
Participant 9: Okay ra kay kanang plitehan man sad sa panda pud, ang amoa lang is
dili mag sigeg pirme cancel order kay ma suspinso man ka
Interviewer 2: So next question kuya, unsay mga benepisyo nga imong nadawat as a
food panda rider?
SSS, wala man. Kana lang
Interviewer 2: Insurance
Interviewer 2: So next question kuya is, unsa imong mga motivation as a food panda
rideR?
70
Interviewer 2: Then last question namo kuya kay, if imong I kompara ang katong
Interviewer 2: Kanang naa mi last question kuya, what change do you want to happen
in your current work system unsay ganahan nimo ma bag o sa food
panda app ba ron nga makatabang jud nimo
Participant 9: Ah kuan kanang kana gyud among plitehan, kay kana man gud among
plitehan, mag depende sa among batch, kay naa man gud nay batch
Participant 9: Kay mao nay, mura man sya og , mag base man gud syag mura
kag decline, mag sige kag cancel order nya usahay ma late ka ig log in
Kasagran is
kanang imbes 40 pesos na diri dapita, mahimo nalang na siyang 30
kapin butang nato 35 or 36 ana ra,
71
Interviewer 2: Sayang
Participant 9: Oh
Participant 10: 37
Interviewer 2: Then how long have you been working as a foodpanda rider?
Interviewer 2: So, mag sugod nata sa among interview question kuya, so first namong
question kuya, katong pag saka sa gasolina kuya, unsa imong reaction
ato? Unsa imong na huna-huna?
Participant 10: Naglisod, kay di man mo dagan amoang motor kung walay gasolina
nya mahug man sad puhunan namo kay gasolina, pero pag, unsa man
nga pag saka? Katong pag Odette? Or?
litter nga among ma consume, naa mi discount makuha.
Interviewer 2: Then next question kuya kay, unsa imong na experience katong time
nga ni saka ang gasolina kuya as a foodpanda rider?
Participant 10: Sa Odette, wala may panda ato, (naa ba to Ben pag Odette?... murag
naa
kuan sa Russia, mao to lisod-lisod sad gamay, kay instead nga among
ma consume sa gasolina per day, for example full tank man ko 200,
rider?
Participant 10: Actually, wala ko mag huna-huna kay, mao man jud akoang source of
income kini sauna pajud
So, kung layo
amoang hatdan, nya, so dakog consume amoang gasoline kay syempre
layo man amoa hatdan nya depende pud sad sa amoang pag rev mag
dali mi padong didto the more dali ka maabot didto daghan sad kag ma
consume na gasoline, So dako gyud kaayo sya og kanang kuan sa
amoa
73
foodpanda, so kung mo decline mi, maguba to siya so ma down mi mo
gamay among income kay mas baba ang imong ranking mo baba
imong plite.
Interviewer 2: Then next question kuya kay how does traffic affect you as foodpanda
rider? Gi unsa pagka apekto sa traffic nimo kuya, kanang sa foodpanda
rider specially relating sa imong gas if traffic kaayo unsa?
bisan wala paka nag dagan nya ga andar imong motor mo consume
Interviewer 2: Nya wala man kuya, so unsa man imong gi buhat para ma bawi ani
imong gastusin para sa gasolina?
Participant 10: Ni kuan, ni for example, ni work og hard, biyahe lang nang biyahe oh
dagan. Like mag panda mi kay nay og wala miy duty sa foodpanda,
mag habal-habal, maxim, bisag unsa nga pwede ma kuanan, mga
pwede
Participant 10: Oh
Interviewer 2: Then if you don’t receive any order, if di ka madawat og order kuya,
Participant 10: Ing-ani, lingkod lingcod, chill-chill, maghuwat
orderan so, magbase pud sa customer nga kuan nay mo booking nya
naa man.
Participant 10: Kuan, sa customer namo, hinuon dili man nato ma kuan tanan
customer, naa man gyuy mga customer nga mga encounter nga kanang
murag ubos ra kaayo ilang tan aw namo, mga ingon ana. Then, sa
among management, lahi naman gud ang ilang system karon kumpara
dati ba, like sa hinuon dili naman gyud to mahitabo nga mabalik tong
pag pandemic namo is, usually dako gyud mig agi nya karon gamay
nalang among agi like amoang pinaka dako pag pandemic is 75 sa
batch 1 nya minimum namo is 55. Karon naa namiy tag 25 minimum
customer nya mao na nga naa namiy 25 instead of 55, 25 nalang so
dawat as a foodpanda rider?
Participant 10: Sa Foodpanda, murag, wala man, like naa man silay gi hatag sa amoa
pero kinahanglan pa nga applyan like kanang mga basta, og benefits
lang, wala gyud. Like kanang makuha nimo sa ubang company ingon
ana? Wala mi kay freelance man gud mi, ingon ana ba mao nay naka
Interviewer 2: Like inyoha rang choice if mag insurance mo? Dili mo securan?
Interviewer 2: Then, ang next question namo kuya kay unsa imong motivation kuya
as a foodpanda rider, nganong padayon lang gihapon ka?
Participant 10: Ah nganong padayon ko? Kay first, murag og mang apply paka rog
lisod sad, nya sa karon gud nga time is mas pabor jud ang ingon ani
Interviewer 2: Then last question namo kuya kay kung imong I compare ang pagsaka
sa gasolina og karon kuya, unsa may difference nahimo sa imong
gaan gaan.
Participant 10: Gamay ramag diperensya, gamay rajud syag deperensya. Hinoon
gud nga time karon nga month is ting mingaw jud
Interviewer 2: Okay na kuya, so among closing question kuya kay, unsa imong
ganahan ma bag-o sa system sa foodpanda nga makatabang nimo or
ninyo as foodpanda rider?
Participant 10: So sa among system, gusto nako, namo nga mga foodpanda rider nga
unta fair sila ba, ihatag nila og sakto sa amoa kay kana man gud
amoang booking for example, nakoy booking diria, nasudlan ko dirig
ganing I correct pa gani Ninyo masuko paman gani sila
Interviewer 2: Pero nganong pa kuanon man sad mog order sa panda nga layo mo?
basta kadlawn)
Participant 10: Kana man gung mag book ka, ikaw mag gud mo butang sa imohang
location, so kinahanglan nga kana imong location nga gi butang kay
tan aw nimo nga inig check nimo before nimo I place ang order, I
mo bayad. For example, si customer and bayronon is 49 nya kami naa
reach out mi ana sa panda di man gihapon mi nila paminawon, kay
wala mo ingon raman na silage og mo report diri sa Cebu City nya
77
kuan diria , dili mi katawag anang naas gawas. So kuan ra chat chat ra,
Participant 10: Ang kanang item, kanang inig book aw inig book Ninyo naa nana
drop nga wala pami bayri, so mao nan ga time ma cancel ang order,
maoy naay oras among duty like, karon duty. Akong duty, pinakataas
Di man sad nato ma kuan gud kay kanang
daghan man pud, naa pay dine-in nya dili rapud kami ang delivery naa
panda man gud dili man gud nila on the spot bayad so unahon jud nila
ang dine-in.
Lain gyud tong dali ra, ig abot namo
prepared na nya pick up diretso nya drop-off kuha nasad.
78
Mandaue City 11
Participant 11: 49
Interviewer 2: so, unsa imong reaction katong ni kalit ug saka ang gasoline?
Participant 11: Ang among kita, akong kita ni gamay kay tungod sa gasoline and then
traffic so mo consume jud ug dako dakog gasolina.
79
So, dako kayg epekto ang traffic sa among
trabaho.
Participant 11: wala, wala gyuy ge hatag namo. Amo ra gyud paningkamot na maka
gasolina mi sa among kaugalingong motor.
Interviewer 2: unya unsa man imong ge buhat kuya para ma taplan tawn tung dako
among trabaho isip delivery rider labi nag traffic na.
Interviewer 2: next question kuya kay if dli ka makadawat ug order kuya mag unsa
man ka? Unsa imong buhaton?
Participant 11: Sometimes mag habal habal mangitag option lain, sideline.
Participant 11: oo
among pagkaon sa customer niya kami mo bayad mao mana. Gasolina
kami mo bayad ang amount sa pagkaon 500 niya among kita 200 pa
aw wa abuno pamig 300 so mao nay kasagaran customer na dugay mo
kuha sa ilang order mao rana among problema kasagaran isip usa ka
rider.
as a food panda rider?
among benipisyo mao ratong insurance nga gehatag namo sauna pero
karon mostly daghan naman gud naa nay grab, maxim so maybe guro
80
I don’t know wa na gyud tungod pud guro daghan nami mga rider
kayka?
Interviewer 3: next question namo kuya kay unsa man imong motivation as a
man jud mis gasolina kay dili man mo dagan among motor ug way
Participant 11: isip food panda rider nga kana rajung gasolina mo barato and then isip
sa companya mangayo mig benipisyo nga ilabi nag uwan, init nga
among ge sakopan taga deliver labi nag madisgrasya nga naa tay
Participant: Oh
Interviewer 2: Unya pila naka ka years or months nag work as a foodpanda rider?
Interviewer 2: Nya, first question namo kuya kay katong pagsaka sa gasolina kuya
unsa imong reaksyon ato? Unsa imong nahunahuna?
booking so wala mi mahimo kay mao mana ila gi kuan so agwantan ra
jud to namo na kuan makabiyahe ra mi taga adlaw nya pero naa man
gasolina kuya? unsa imo naexperience as a foodpanda rider?
grab, panda riders ug lalamove nanghatag sila ug 4 liter taga litro
gasolina naabot man to ug ochintay-kwatro so naa koy less nga kuan
foodpanda kay makakita, above minimum ra man gihapon mi so
companya nga kuan hinuon minus man gasolina kay back and fourth
man
Interviewer 3: The effects of oil price hike on foodpanda riders in lapu lapu city a
phenomenology.
Interviewer 4: so, before we start may I ask your consent na mag record like audio
record kuya?
Participant 1: mo tuig ko karong June as a rider dugay na. kanang maxim una,
akong daily needs maapektohan niya ge manage control nya iyang
maabot niya sig andar imong makina kas siyag gasolina niya as a rider
kay by hour bayaran siyas food panda per ride work as a rider nag base
Participant 1: wala syay ingon ana kay freelance man mi. motor gas amoa nana.
Interviewer 4: unsa man imong ge buhat kuya para ma bayran imong gas expense
Participant 1: wala raman gehapon kay kasagaran more on sa ingon ana nga
akong delivery fee.
Interviewer 4: Kung wala kay orders maabot or booking kuya unsa imong buhaton?
unsay kalahian nila ron?
Interviewer 4: Despite sa mga kalisud of being a food panda rider what has driven
you to go on?
Interviewer 3: The effects of oil price hike on foodpanda riders in lapu lapu city a
phenomenology.
Interviewer 4: so, before we start may I ask your consent na mag record like audio
record kuya?

rider?
Participant 2: wala.
Participant 2: Oo, naa apektohan ako income dili maka kaon akong mga bata
Interviewer 3: The effects of oil price hike on foodpanda riders in lapu lapu city a
phenomenology.

Interviewer 4: Naka huna- huna baka ya na mo hawa sa imong job as food panda
rider?
Participant 3: dako jud kaau dae ang pleti barato ang gas perting mahala
Participant 3: way lain hisgotan dae maglagot rajud kay mag yawyaw pa ang
customer.
Interviewer 4: Kung wala kay orders maabot or booking kuya unsa imong buhaton?
Interviewer 4: ug imong I compare ang gas price sauna ug karon unsa imong masulti?
Unsay kalahian nila?
Interviewer 4: Despite sa mga kalisud of being a food panda rider what has driven
you to go on?
Interviewer 4: unsa imong mga gustong mabag o sa imong work system kuya?
Interviewer 3: The effects of oil price hike on foodpanda riders in lapu lapu city a
phenomenology.

record kuya?
Participant 5: Ricky
Participant 5: 36
Participant 5: 3 years
Interviewer 4: naa kay lain ge apilan nga delivery services like grab, maxim?
Participant 5: wala
foodpanda rider?
Participant 5: akong experience is medyo lisud jud kay sauna man gud imong 100 is
imong income sap ag rider mo usus pajd ug ma kuhaan gamay nalay
mabilin
Participant 5: kay una unsa kapoy ug resgo kay naa kas kalsada niya freelance rami
meaning no employer relationship ug unsay mahitabo namo sa dalan
wala silay hatag.
Interviewer 4: unsa may epekto sap ag taas sa gas sa income ug sap ag adlaw adlaw
na gastos?
Participant 5: dakog epekto oi bisag 5- or 3-pesos rana sya taga litro dako siyag
barato raman depende sa imong batch kay by batch man dako siyag
epekto.
kalas or sayang sa oras.
Participant 5: wala
Interviewer 4: niya unsa man imong ge buhat para ma cover imong pang bayad sa
gas?
napangutana?
Interviewer 4: unsay mga benipisyo nga imong na dawat as a food panda rider?
Participant 5: wala man silay kuan kaning trabaho maka income mi naka
panginabuhi mi aning companya nga among adlaw adlaw na
kinahanglan nakatabang sad gamay.
mo allocate jud kag budget.
Interviewer 4: unsa ang mga hardship na imohang nadawat as a food panda rider ug
unsay nakapadayon nimo?
Lapu-lapu City 6
Participant 6: 39
Interviewer 1: how long man have you been working as a foodpanda rider
Participant 6: syempre nadismaya gamay kay ang among income dapat nga maul isa
among pamilya kay mabawas bawasan ba. Tungod sa gasolina
Interviewer 1: unsa man imong naexperience ato kuya during that time katong nitaas
trabaho gihapon
Interviewer 1: how did the oil price hike affect your income and daily expenses.
gasolina
Interviewer 1: unya ang traffic kuya giunsa man sya pagkaapekto nimo as a
foodpanda rider.
93
Participant 6: ang traffic, motor raman mi. Makalusot lusot man gihapon, di man
ingon nga gawas sa naay madisgrasya. Ah okay raman gihapon. Diri ra
sa lapu lapu ha. Sa cebu murag traffic gyud to.
Interviewer 1: traffic jud didto. Lahi lahi mag experience gud. Nya kuya moprovide
ba ang company ug gas allowance ninyo?
Interviewer 1: if dili kuya, kanang unsa may gibuhat nimo para mabawi nimo imong
pangpalit sa gas
Participant 6: sa akong load, pila manang atong kuan. One month akong giload. Unli
na sya, unli call. Nya sa akong gasolina, akong motor makatipid tipid
hinuon. Di man pud kas ug gasolina ang akong motor.
Interviewer 1: mga pila man pud imong matubil taga adlaw sukad atong nitaas ang
gasolina
Participant 6: kato akong itubil sauna nga 150, mahimo nag 250. Dako syag effect.
Interviewer 1: unsa man ang mga benefits nimo kuya na mareceive as a foodpanda
rider?
Interviewer 1: motivation nimo being a food panda rider. Unsa may nagmotivate
