COOLING LOAD ESTIMATION

{1} Conduction from roof, wall, glass:

𝑄𝑠 = UA(CLTD)

U= overall heat transfer coefficient (Table 4 pg 24.4)

A= surface area
CLTD= cooling load temp diff (Table 32 pg 28.43 to 28.45 for wall, Table 30 pg 28.42 for roof, Table 34
pg 28.49 for glass)

*CLTD is only for indoor temp of 25.5°C, outdoor max temp of 35°C with mean temp of 29.5°C and
daily range of 11.6°C. Other than that must use Corr CLTD:

Corr CLTD = CLTD + (25.5 – indoor temp) + [(indoor temp + outdoor temp)/2]

{2} Radiation through glass:

𝑄𝑠 = A(SC)(SCL)

A= area
SC= shading coefficient (Table 11 pg 29.25 to 29.26)
SCL= solar cooling load (Table 36 pg 28.50)

*SC = SHGC/0.87

{3.1} Internal heat gain from people:

𝑄𝑠 = (no of pax) x (𝑄𝑠 per pax)(CLF)

𝑄𝐿 = (no of pax) x (𝑄𝐿 per pax)

Qs and QL may refer to Table 3 pg 28.8

CLF= cooling load factor (normally equal to 1 if system is not running 24 hour)

{3.2} Internal heat gain from lighting:

𝑄𝑠 = (watt) x 3.41 x (ballast factor) x (CLF)

3.41= convert from watt to Btu/hr

Ballast factor= 1.2 for fluorescent light, 1.0 for incandescent light)
CLF= cooling load factor (normally equal to 1 if system is not running 24 hour)

*sometimes given as lighting energy per sq ft (multiply by floor area)

{3.3} Internal heat gain from equipment:

i. May refer to Table 4 to Table 9 pg 28.10 to 28.15, or

ii. Given by equipment manufacturer, or
iii. Given as equipment energy per sq ft

{4} Infiltration:
(vol.of space)𝑥 (𝑎𝑖𝑟 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒)
infiltration airflow = 60

𝑄𝑠 = 1.085 x (airflow) x (∆T)

𝑄𝐿 = 0.7 x (airflow) x (∆w)

1.085= (density) x (specific heat)

0.7= latent heat factor
ΔT= outdoor and indoor temp diff
Δw= outdoor and indoor humidity diff (grv/lba)
