WHITE CSA CEMENT

fast set
rapid strength
autogenous drying
compensated shrinkage
consistent white colour
low alkali
extreme strength
CALUMEX ®UPC WHITE
is a special Calcium Sulfo Aluminate Cement (CSA) designed for decorative concrete ,
countertops, terrazzo, flooring, glass fiber reinforced concrete (GRC), dry-mixed mortars,
architectural precast, fiber cement and more.
Although its white color makes it specifically suited for decorative applications, its extremely high
(early) strength and abrasion resistance means it can also be used for projects such as:

Tunneling • non-shrinking grouts • decorative thin overlay • terrazzo floors • tile adhesives
and - grouts etc.

Specially selected high purity raw materials, optimized calcination and carefully monitored
grinding guarantee a consistent white color.

TILE ADHESIVES and GROUTS
benefit of autogenous drying
Todays tiles, ceramic, natural stone, cement-bound , are getting bigger and thinner. Thickness
between 3 and 6 mm.(0,12”~0,24”) is becoming the standard. According to European Tile Setters
Federation (EUF) large sized tile can be divided in XL tiles (surface area of 1 square meter or 10
square feet , while XXL tiles have a surface area of at least 3 m² or 32 square feet.
Modern unglazed floor tiles are manufactured using the Ultragres procedure. The water
absorbency is <0.05% on the surface and water absorbency on the bottom ≤0.3%.
How can one ensure sufficient contact surface when installing these type of large tiles assuring
sufficient bond strength?
First the substrate must be absolutely clean and flat (deviations must be limited to 3 mm (0,12”)
under a 1 m batten) - in case required apply a fast drying Self Leveling Underlayment and apply
a suitable primer.
Most thin tiles have an extreme low water uptake and are placed with extreme fine joints. The
only suitable installation technique in bedding large tiles is by using the buttering-floating
technique.Strongly recommended is to use a “Type C2” tile adhesive. (EuropeanStandard ≥ 1
N/mm2 adhesion strength)
The adhesive is applied in a straight line to both the substrate and the back of the tile. When
bedding make sure that adhesive grooves of the substrate and the tile are in the same direction
and that the tile can be inserted correctly with a back and forth movement, crosswise to the
adhesive grooves.
Tiles are pressed firmly from the center towards the edges in order to flatten the adhesive grooves
and to minimize the amount of air inclusions.Ultimately is to have a maximum contact surface
and an optimal adhesive distribution to assure an optimum bond.In most cases more water is
added to make the adhesive more fluid. This benefits the distribution under the tiles and improves
the contact surface.
Large tiles require fewer joints and are usually finer in width than 2 mm./0,08”
So now we have large surface tiles and fewer and more narrow joints.Water has no chance to
escape and especially at the heart of the tile the adhesive can not completely hydrate. As a result
the bond strength is reduced!
CALUMEX® UPC WHITE as binder (or part replacement of OPC) in manufacturing tile
adhesives or -grouts, autogenous drying of the mortar is guaranteed through controlled formation
of large amounts of ettringite crystals.Binding most of the excess water in the crystal leads to
rapid drying throughout the complete interfacial surface.
HUNTER
Simultaneously, in this chemical process, an increase of volume takes place. As a result positive
expansion results in compensating the drying shrinkage.
This guarantees an improved and stable adhesive bond strength.
CALUMEX UPC WHITE is a low alkali cement. When natural stone is placed the risk on stains
forming on the ®
surface is minimized.
Tile joints
As with tile adhesives, controlled formation of ettringite crystals plays an important role in
optimizing the performance of tile grouts.
Normally tile grouts used in the application of large sized tiles contain a lot of water in order to
fill the thin, fine joints.
This poses a problem in terms of shrinkage, porosity, efflorescence and reduced wear resistance.
Using CALUMEX UPC WHITE as binder guarantees a quick hardening and drying of the grout
as well as an improvement off the fine matrix, leaving less pores.
It enhances the density thus improving the wear.
Positive expansion further reduce the shrinkage ensuring a durable and stable joint.
Low alkali content further prevents discoloration of the grout and possible formation of lime
bloom.
