1. The basic principles of prestressed concrete were applied to construction and they were not limited
to structures in concrete. It has been applied to steel construction as well. In prestressed concrete, the
steel is preelongated so as to avoid excessive lengthening under service load, while the concrete is
precompressed so as to prevent cracks under tensile stress. Prestressed concrete is basically concrete in
which there have been introduced internal stresses of such magnitude and distribution that the stresses
resulting from given external loadings are counteracted to a desired degree.

2. The early attempts in prestressing using ordinary mild steel fail because there is no application of
force in the steel and it will form some deformation.

3. I adopt circular prestressing in referring it to prestressing in round members such as tanks and pipes
and where the prestressing wires are wound in circles. Circular prestressing is basically utilized to
indicate the prestressing of circular structure and when the prestressed members are curved, in the
direction of prestressing.

4. It is necessary to use high strength concrete and high tensile steel in prestressed concrete because it
will result in lighter and slender members than it is possible with reinforced concrete. The two features
of prestressed concrete on being high strength and the freedom from cracks contribute durability of
structure under aggressive environmental conditions. Prestressing the concrete improves the ability of
material to absorb energy under impact loads.

5. The terms refer to the cases where concrete is prestressed. It all differs in the quantity of direction.
(a)Uniaxial- In only one direction
(b) Biaxial – in two mutually perpendicular directions
(c) Triaxial – In three mutually perpendicular directions.
