Exercise 1: The bottle


Creating a new part document
 Create a new project.
 In this new project, create a Part document, select the Steel Part standard template, then click on to
confirm.
 Rename the part The bottle and validate by pressing the Enter key.

Creating the work planes

 Create an offset plane at a distance of 80mm from the absolute XY plane.

 Validate the plane.


 Repeat the operation to create two other offset planes at a respective distance of 125mm and 200mm from
the absolute XY plane.

Note: The sketch 1 will be created on the absolute XY plane.

 Create a Ø60mm circle and place its center on the frame’s origin.

 Create a tight and closed spline using four passing points, then click on to confirm.

 Apply the following constraints to the sketch.

 Validate the sketch by clicking on the button .

Note: The sketch 2 will be created on the plane 1.

 Create an ellipse in Free size mode. Check the Given foci box and place both extreme points on the X
axis.

 Apply the following constraints to the sketch.

 Validate the sketch by clicking on the button .

 Create a Ø50mm circle and place its center on the frame’s origin.

 Validate the sketch by clicking on the button .

 Create a Ø25mm circle and place its center on the frame’s origin.

 Validate the sketch by clicking on the button .


 Hide all the planes.

Creating the bottle’s body

 In the Surface tab, create a lofted shape and add the four
profiles just created to the Profiles field by clicking on each of them
in the graphical area.

Warning: For sketch 1, use rotary picking to select only the Ø60mm
circle.

Note: Since the loft profiles are closed, all their origins must be
synchronized and in the same direction.

 Validate the lofted shape.

Note: The sketch 5 will be created on the absolute XZ plane.

 Create a rectangle using the 3 points, by diagonal construction mode and adjust its dimensions to
200x10mm.

 Create a point at the intersection of the Y axis and the lower length of the rectangle. Set the dimension
between the point and the X axis to 60mm.

 Finish dimensioning the sketch as below.

 Validate the sketch by clicking on the button .

 In the Shape tab, trim the shape 1 using the sketch 5.

 Validate the trimming operation.

Note: The result is a multi-body part.

 In the Shape tab pull-down menu, select Other Operations > Offset, then offset the upper part of the
shape 1 to a distance of 2mm and declare the lower part of the shape as a special face to 0mm.

 Validate the offset.

 Create a lofted shape between the two edges of the shape 1.

 Validate the lofted shape.


 Right-click on shape 2, select the Attributes function and choose the green color.

 Create an offset plane at 2mm from the plane 3, then click on .

 Right-click on plane 4 and select Others > Extent. Check the Modifiable extent box and complete the
fields as below.

 Click on to confirm.

Note: The sketch 6 will be created on the plane 4.

 Create a Ø25mm circle centered on the frame’s origin.


 Validate the sketch by clicking on the button .

 Extrude the sketch 6 to a height of 15mm, then click on .

 Right-click on shape 3, select the Attributes function and choose the blue color.
 Hide the plane 4.

 Create a lofted shape between the edges of shape 1 and shape 3, then click on .

 Right-click on shape 4, select the Attributes function and choose the yellow color.

You should end up with the result shown opposite.

Creating the base of the bottle


 Hide the previously created shapes and show the sketch 1.
 In the Surface tab, create a flat shape on sketch 1, then click on .

 Hide the sketch 1.

 Create an offset point at 5mm from the absolute origin point along the absolute Z axis, then click
on .

 In the Surface tab, create a constrained shape using the inner edge of the gray surface as the boundary
curve and the previously created offset point as the constraining point.

 Validate the constrained shape.


 Right-click on shape 6, select the Attributes function and choose the orange color. Hide the shapes
5 and 6, as well as point 1.

Creating the threading


 From the Entities tree, show the shape 3.

 In the Tools tab, create a Z axial frame. Uncheck the Automatic option.

 Validate the axial frame.

 In the 3D Sketch tab’s pull-down menu, select Operations > Helix and create a helix in a new sketch.

 Validate the helix.


 Validate the sketch by clicking on the button .

 In the Tools tab, create a plane on profile, then click on .

 Draw the following contour on the previously created plane and dimension it.

 Validate the sketch by clicking on the button .


 In the Surface tab, create a pipe shape, then click on .

 Hide the plane 5.

 Add chamfers to both ends of the helix.

 Validate the chamfers.


 Add fillets to edges resulting from the chamfer operation.

 Validate the fillets.

 In the Surface tab, remove the inner face of the threading, then click on .

 Trim the threading using the sketch 6, then click on .

 In the Surface tab, imprint the threading’s edges on the neck shape, then click on .

 Remove the imprinted face, then click on .

Assembling all the bottle’s parts


 Show all shapes.

 In the Surface tab, sew all the shapes together in order to get a
single geometry, then click on .

A message box with the sewing result appears.

 Click on the OK button.

 In the Shape tab, create a fillet faces-faces on all the shapes in order to get a single geometry, then click
on .

Finishing the bottle

 In the Shape tab’s pull-down menu, select Other Operations > Thicken, thicken the surface to 0,5mm
inward, then click on .

 Remove the threading’s inner faces and select Extend as the heal type.

 Validate the removing operation.


 Create fillets on the neck.

 Validate the fillets.

 Edit the sketch 1 and extrude the outer profile to


15mm.
 Validate the extrusion.

 In the Operations tree, drag the previously created extrusion operation before the very first lofted surface.
 Edit the lofted shape which generated the outer shape of the bottle in order to add a tangency constraint.
 Right-click on the arrow’s cone and click on Add Constraint. Select the extruded surface, and then click
on to confirm the tangency.

 Validate the lofted shape.


 Hide the shape 8.

Assigning properties
 In the Project tree, right-click on the part document The bottle and select Properties.
 Click on the Edit button.
 Enter the following properties:
- Description: Bottle
- Part number: FG1

 Confirm the properties.


 Save, then close the document by using the mouse wheel on the part document’s upper tab.

Creating a new part
 Create a new Part document, select the Steel Part standard template, then click on to confirm.
 Rename the part The pitcher and validate by pressing the Enter key.

Creating the pitcher’s body

 Create a tight and closed spline using four passing points on the absolute XY plane, and then
constrain it as below.

 Right-click on each point and select Not Internal.


 Validate the sketch by clicking on the button .

 Create a tight and open spline using three passing points on the absolute XZ plane.

 Apply the following constraints to the sketch.

 Validate the sketch by clicking on the button .

 Create the third sketch on the absolute XZ plane as seen below.

 Right-click on shape 1, select the Attributes function and apply a transparency of 50%.

Creating the pitcher’s cover


 In the Surface tab, select the Faces function. Copy the handle’s upper face, then click on .

 Using the Attributes function, assign the pink color to shape 4.

 Create an offset plane at 150mm from the absolute XY plane.

 Validate the offset plane.

 Trim the shape 4 using the plane 2, then click on .

 Create a reciprocal trim between shape 1 and shape 4, then click on .

 Create an offset point at 10mm from the absolute origin point along the absolute Z axis.

 Validate the offset point.


 Create a constrained shape using the lower edge of shape 1 as the boundary curve and the previously
created point as the constraining point.

 Validate the constrained shape.


 Right-click on shape 5, select the Attributes function and choose the green color.

Finishing the pitcher

 In the 3D Sketch tab, create an edge copy of shape 2’s boundary edges.

 Validate the edge copy.


 Validate the sketch by clicking on the button .

 Imprint the edges on shape 1.

 Click on to confirm.

 Remove the faces resulting from the imprinting operation.

 Validate the removing operation.

 Sew shape 1, shape 2 and shape 5 together in order to get a single element.

 Validate the sewing operation.

 Add 15mm fillets as seen below.

 Validate the fillets.

Declaring the part representation


 In addition to shape 1, insert shape 4 as a part. In the part document’s Entities tree, open the Shapes folder,
and then drag Shape 4 into Design Representation.
 Do the same for Detailed Representation.

Assigning properties
 In the Project tree, right-click on the part document The pitcher and select Properties.
 Click on the Edit button.
 Enter the following properties:
- Description: Pitcher
- Part number: FG2

 Confirm the properties.


 Save, then close the document by using the mouse wheel on the part document’s upper tab.

Creating a new part

 Create a new Part document, select the Steel Part standard template and click on to confirm.
 Rename the part The saddle and validate by pressing the Enter key.

Creating the sketch 1

 Create the sketch 1 on the absolute XY support plane and draw the contour shown below. Add the
following dimensional and geometric constraints.
Note: The center of the R300mm circle is coincident with the Y axis.

 Create two A and B points. Point A must be coincident with the Y axis and the 5° line. Point B must be
coincident with the second oblique line and located at 120mm from the Y axis.

Note: Points A and B will be used as end points in next sketches

 Validate the sketch by clicking on the button .

 Create the sketch 2 on the absolute XZ support plane based on the previous method.

Note: Point D is aligned with point B of sketch 1.

 Create a plane by point and normal passing through the point B of sketch 1 and normal to the absolute
X axis, then click on .

 Create the sketch 4 on the previously created plane.

 Validate the sketch by clicking on the button .

 Hide the plane 1.

Creating the half surface of the saddle

 Extrude sketch 1 to a height of 20mm, and then do the same


for sketch 2.

Note: The two generated surfaces will be used later to apply tangency
constraints.

 Right-click on shape 1, select the Attributes function and choose the green color. Do the same for
shape 2 by changing its color to blue.

 Create a lofted shape. In the Profiles field, add sketch 1 and sketch 2 by clicking on each of them in the
graphical area. Check the Surface box. Activate the Guides dialog, then click on sketch 3 and sketch 4.

 Right-click on the arrow’s cone and select Add Constraint.

 Click on all faces of shape 1 and click on .

 Repeat the operation for shape 2.

 Validate the lofted shape.


 Right-click on shape 1 and select Hide. Do the same for shape 2.

Creating the full saddle


 Create a symmetrical pattern union of shape 3 using the absolute XZ plane.

 Validate the symmetry plane.


 Validate the pattern union.

 Right-click on the frames of the pattern 1 and select Hide.

 Activate the realistic render mode.

Declaring the part representation


Note: The first shape created in a TopSolid document is considered to be the part being created. However, this is
not so in this exercise, since the first shape generated here was the green surface. TopSolid must therefore be
told what the right part is.
 In the Entities tree, open the Representations folder.
 In Design Representation, right-click on Shape 1 and
select Delete.
 Do the same for Detailed Representation.

 Insert shape 3 as a part. Open the Shapes folder, then


drag Shape 3 into Design Representation.
 Do the same for Detailed Representation.

Assigning properties
 In the Project tree, right-click on the part document The saddle and select Properties.
 Click on the Edit button.
 Enter the following properties:
- Description: Saddle
- Part number: FG3

 Confirm the properties.


 Save, then close the document by using the mouse wheel on the part document’s upper tab.

Importing the Iges file


 Right-click on the project name and select Import/Export, then
Import File with Conversion.

 Open the file Body.igs and complete the import parameters as seen below.

 Click on to confirm.

 Right-click on the imported shape and select Others > Analyze.


Note: The result is a surface shape.

 Click on to confirm.

Locating the holes on the part


 Create an edge copy of the shape’s boundary
edges in order to locate holes on the part, then click on
.

Note: The shape has four holes.

 Validate the sketch by clicking on the button


.
 Hide the sketch 1.

Repairing the holes


 In the Surface tab, fill the part’s lower
hole by selecting the Fill method in the drop-
down list and checking the Smooth box.
 Click on to confirm.

Note: This method is useful for plane holes or holes that generate a single surface.

 Fill the left side hole by selecting the Extend


method in the drop-down list, then click on .

Note: With this method, you get an extended surface up


to the limits of the neighboring faces.

 Measure the existing fillet using the Analyze Geometry function, then click on .

 Create a 5mm fillet on the previously obtained edge, then click on .

 Repeat the same operations on the opposite hole.

 Fill the part’s upper hole by selecting the Fill method in the drop-down list, then click on .
Note: The generated surface is not correct. Another method is required to create this surface.

 Cancel the previously created fill-hole surface by clicking on the Undo icon.

 Create a lofted surface by selecting the two largest edges as profiles, then click on .

 Assign the yellow color to the previously created surface.

 Sew all the shapes together in order to get a single volume, then click on .

 Check that the resulting shape is a solid. To do this, right-click on the shape and select Others >
Analyze.

 Save and close the document.

Importing the Iges file


 Right-click on the project name and select Import/Export, then Import File with Conversion.
 Open the file Clamp.igs and complete the import parameters as seen below.

Notes: The Simplify geometry parameter is used to reduce the number of faces.
The Sew sheet bodies parameter is used to obtain a single surface, whenever possible.

The import result should be the following:

 If necessary, modify the view so that holes will be viewed more easily.

Checking the result


 Right-click on the part and select Others > Analyze.

Displaying the holes

 In the 3D Sketch tab, select the Edges Copy function.


 Select All border edges in the drop-down list, then click on .
 Validate the sketch by clicking on the button .

Filling the holes

Blend-type hole
 Use the Fill Hole function and select the Fill method in the drop-down list. Check the Smooth option.
 Click on the edge loop as seen below.

 Click on to confirm.

Plane-type hole
 Use the Fill Hole function again.
 Choose the Extend method in the drop-down list.

 Click on to confirm.

 Delete the sketch 1.


 Perform an edge copy again to check the repairs just performed.

At this stage, there are two holes left.

Repairing using a swept surface


In this case, the Fill Hole function is not appropriate.

 Create a swept surface using the upper edge as the path and the two extreme arcs as sections.

Warning: The section curves must head in the same direction, i.e. in the travel direction on the guide curve.

 Validate the swept surface.


 Sew this surface with the rest of the part.

At this stage, the last hole should be as below.

Repairing using a constrained surface


In this case, the Fill Hole function is not appropriate.

 In the Surface tab, create a constrained surface.


 Activate the Constraining Boundary Curves mode, select the edges shown below, then click on .
Note: A red exclamation mark informs you that all the boundary edges have not been selected. You can zoom
in to make small edges easier to select, if necessary. Once the preview appears, the icon becomes active.

 Sew this surface with the part, then click on .


Note: No orange line must be visible.

 Check the repair operation. To do this, right-click on the part and select Others > Analyze.

 Save and close the document.

Creating sketches in the assembly


Creating sketches in an assembly document will allow you to modify the helix and the axis simultaneously.

 Create a new assembly document and rename it Archimedes' screw.

 Enable the Trim by plane mode, then select Absolute XY Plane in the drop-down list as the trimming
plane.
 Check that the arrow indicates the correct direction of material removal and validate the trimming
operation.

 Repeat the trimming operation. To do this, create an offset plane by clicking on the icon and selecting
Absolute XY Plane in the drop-down list. The offset value must be 5*10 (5 turns in pitch 10).

 Create a new Part document and rename it Variable pitch spring.
 In the Tools tab, create the following real parameters:
- Dw = 9mm (diameter of the wire)
- D = 100mm (diameter of the spring fiber)
- P1 = 10mm (pitch for part 1)
- P2 = 50mm (pitch for part 2)
- P3 = 20mm (pitch for part 3)
- P = 314,159265mm (perimeter of the circle of diameter D (P=PI*D))
 Always in the Tools tab, create the following integer parameters:
- N1 = 3 (number of turns for part 1)
- N2 = 5 (number of turns for part 2)
- N3 = 4 (number of turns for part 3)
In the Entities tree, you should end up with the following result:
