Dear Lyndsey Weiner:

As a dual photojournalism and management major at Syracuse University, I have wondered how the world of
communication will change in my field as we continue to shift to a digital workspace. A lot of meaning is packed
into visual and verbal tells such as facial expressions and voice inflection, so how can I as a communicator
express the same meaning using only written words? When I came across Advanced Writing Studio: Professional
Writing when selecting my courses for the following semester, I knew I had found the source of clarity to better
answer my question. I am eager to learn more about professional communication in a digital environment
through this class, and I believe that with the skills I learn from this class, I can go into the world and use
communication to make it a better place.

Through my work at The Daily Orange, the independent student-run newspaper of Syracuse, New York, I already
have experience as a communicator in the professional world. I am currently the editor-in-chief, where I lead staff
members to ensure we publish stories throughout the week, correspond with the publication’s Board of Directors,
and act as the public-facing spokesperson of The Daily Orange. This role has led me to learn the importance of
communication in the workforce, as communication is a daily, and arguably the most important, part of my role.
In Advanced Writing Studio: Professional Writing, my time as editor-in-chief will give me valuable perspective to
bring into the class and will give me a launching point to become a better professional communicator from your
course.

In addition to my role at The Daily Orange, the organization is a nonprofit newsroom, very similar to the service
organization that I will be working with as a part of your service learning section of Advanced Writing Studio:
Professional Writing. In my five semesters working for The Daily Orange, I have grown to understand the
inner-workings of nonprofit organizations, which will greatly aid me when working with a service organization
within the Syracuse community, as I already have an in-depth knowledge regarding how nonprofits function,
how to best reach their internal and external audiences, and how to incorporate the nonprofit mission into a
communicable deliverable. My prior familiarity with nonprofits will benefit not only the students I am working
with throughout this class, but the service organization we are supporting.

Outside of my experience in communication and nonprofit management, my strong leadership skills that I have
developed from leading The Daily Orange will allow me to become a leader in this class, supporting other
students so we can reach our ultimate goal of supporting the Syracuse community and learning how to best
communicate. I’m ambitious and determined, ready to take on all this class has to offer in order to bring my
knowledge into the community.

Thank you for considering me for this course, and I look forward to speaking with you.

Sincerely,

Emily Steinberger
