1. An analysis of wind speed data (10 min interval average, taken over a 1 year period) has yielded
an average speed of 6 m/s for a potential WT site. It has been determined that a Weibull wind
speed distribution gives a good fit to the wind data with c = 6 and k=2.

a) Estimate the number of hours per year that the wind speed will be between UB = 10.5 and UA =
9.5 m/s during the year.

b) Estimate the number of hours per year that the wind speed is above 16 m/s.

2. Given a wind turbines with the following parameters, calculate the annual energy production
and capacity factor if:

Cp = Cpmax = 0.48 (Cp value assumed maximum and constant for all wind speeds)

Rated power = 5000 kW = 5.0 MW

Annual average wind speed = 8.0 m/s
Rated wind speed = 13.0 m/s
Cut-in wind speed = 3 m/s
Cut-out wind speed = 25 m/s
Rotor radius = 48.0 m
Area = 7238.2 m2
Air density = 1.20 kg/m3
Weibull distribution with c = 8, and k=2.

3. For a three-bladed wind turbine with a rotor radius of 5 m at sea level where the density is 1.225
kg/m3. If the turbine working at maximum power coefficient:

a. If the wind is blowing at an average speed of 10 m/s, what is the power of the wind traveling
through the swept area of the rotor?

b. What is the average actual power produced by a turbine of this type at this wind speed?

4. For a 90 m diameter turbine rotating at 15 rpm at a wind speed of 10 m/s at rated conditions,
find the relation between the rotational speed and the wind speed for optimum operation below the
rated wind speed?

5. Two 2.3 MW wind turbines are spaced 9.4D apart directly in line with the wind as shown in
figure 1.What is the total power produced and array efficiency? If in wind farm the wind speed at
downstream turbines decrease according to the following relation

CT is the turbine thrust coefficient = 4a(1-a), a: axial induction factor = 1/3, U0: free stream
velocity, D: turbine diameter, X downstream turbine location, UX wake velocity at distance X,
Dx: wake diameter at distance X, k: wake constant = 0.1, a: axial induction factor
