BS-BIOLOGY 1 A

EXAMINATION OF SOME BASIC PLANT TISSUES

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this laboratory exercise is to acquaint you with some of
the important plant tissues.

PROCEDURE AND OBSERVATIONS:

• Search for a microscopic view of a cross section monocot stem: Corn 400x
magnification
• Draw and label the following cells. (Xylem, Phloem, Parenchyma, Collenchyma and
Sclerenchyma)
• Search for a microscopic view of a cross section dicot stem: Heliantus 400x
magnification
• Draw and label the following cells. (Xylem, Phloem, Parenchyma, Collenchyma and
Sclerenchyma)

Discussion:

1. Describe the characteristic of each type of ground tissue:

a. parenchyma
Parenchyma is the most common type of ground tissue in plants. It is composed of many thin-
walled cells with living contents.
b. collenchyma and
Collenchyma cells are also made up of many thin-walled cells but its cell walls contain little or
no cellulose since it doesn't carry out much mechanical work in the plant. The only thing the
collenchyma does is hold up the plant.
c. sclerenchyma
Sclerenchyma cells are made up of thick-walled, dead cells which are also called
fibers.
2. Describe the types, function and distributions of tissues below.
a. Ground tissue
Ground tissue is the supporting and cushioning layer between the body's outer surface and its
deeper layers. This layer includes fat, muscle, bone, nerve sheaths, etc. It is found in all parts
of the body that are subject to mechanical stresses or strains.
b. Vascular tissue
The function of vascular tissue is to transport different bodily fluids and ensure proper cell
function. They also work with your lymphatic system to filter out foreign substances in your
bloodstream. Finally, they work with the skin to keep the outside layer of your skin moist, which
helps prevent damage from UV rays.
