Title: Undertaken total Preventive Maintenance for Extend car life.

Aim: 10 Preventive Maintenances to extend car life.

1. Preventive Maintenance
Cars are some of the most expensive possessions anyone can have, and as such, it is required
that they are well maintained for optimal performance. One of the best ways to ensure your car
serves you well is by carrying out regular preventive maintenance checks on it. Although
vehicle repairs might sometimes be unavoidable, regular preventive maintenance checks can
help prevent costly repairs in future, saving you money in the process as well as keeping your
car in good working condition and its passengers safe.
All the components in a car have their different life expectancy length, and there are specific
times when replacing or topping up parts, lubricants or fluids are required. A great deal of this
information can be found in the Car’s preventive maintenance, and we`ve explained why it`s
so important.
Types of Preventive Maintenance
Preventive maintenance isn’t a blanket term. Here are some of the most common different
types:

1. Regular Oil Change

After buying a new car, you will be asked to bring your vehicle to an auto repair shop
or car dealership for an oil change when the odometer clocks 1000km. It is during this
break-in period that the various parts of the engine begin to come together. When this
happens, small metal particles break off from the parts and mixes with the oil. This is
why an oil change is necessary to help flush out the mixed debris, so they won’t make
the engine wear out prematurely. Regular Oil changes are also necessary after 4,000
and 5,000km respectively.

2. Proper Tire Care

Tires are made of rubber, and as such, they get worn out after bearing the entire weight
of the car for thousands of kilometers. One of the best ways to make your tires last
longer is by rotating them after every 5,000km to make to even the effects of wear and
tear. Also, ensure that the tires are inflated to the exact pressure, and replacements
should be done according to recommendations made by the manufacturers.

3. Belt Change
To enable the car to run properly, the engine uses different types of belts. They include;
Fan Belt, Timing Belt, Power Steering Belt, and The Drive Belt. The effects of regular
use and constant motion causes wear and tear on these belts, and they quickly get worn
out. As a car owner, it is important that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for
belt replacement. Failure to do so might cause mechanical troubles, heavy steering, loss
of electrical power and overheating. Furthermore, the car engine might break down,
and this means you have to spend more on repairs.

4. Battery Replacement
Without batteries, car engines won’t start. Batteries have different life spans, they range
from 12-21 months, and you don’t have to wait till your car stops running from a dead
battery before thinking of getting a replacement battery for it. Most car batteries usually
come with warranties as well, so to be on the safer side, having them replaced as soon
as its warranty expires isn’t a bad idea.

5. Periodic Brake Inspection

Most times, road mishaps occur because of faulty brakes. This goes to show how
important having functional brakes in your car is. They are very essential to you and
the other occupants of the car, and this is why it is very important to schedule periodic
brakes inspection for your car.
6. Do Regular Car Washes And Waxes
Another preventive maintenance that is often overlooked is regular car washes and
waxes; this keeps the paint on your car shiny and polished—not only does it look
fabulous, but in the future, if you ever decide to sell your car, it will make the car look
brand new and hardly used. Taking pride in one’s vehicle is always evident in the
paint. Lastly, you should always monitor your gas mileage. When there is a huge dip
in fuel economy, this can be a big indicator that something is wrong with the engine.
Following most of these 10 suggestions will not only ensure better gas mileage, but it
will maintain the value to your vehicle, and extend the life of your vehicle for years to
come.

7. Clean your Windshields and Replace the Wipers

A dirty windshield can prove to be a lot of hassle when you can't see clearly. If they
are not cleaned regularly they can cause visual impairments and can result in
accidents at times.
It is very important for the driver to have a clear view of the road for safe driving. If
you don't clean them, the dirt and particle can accumulate and scratch the windshield
when you use the wipers.
If the rainy season is approaching, check your wipers and get them replaced if needed.
Using damaged wipers can cause scratches on the glass and obstruct your view, which
might lead the need to replace your entire windshield.

8. Follow The Manufacturer Maintenance Schedule

As mentioned before, every car has its own maintenance schedule as recommended
by the manufacturer; it is always best to follow the maintenance schedule on your
vehicle to ensure that you are following the suggested guidelines. Some of these
services may include checking the battery life and terminals to make sure the power
remains intact and sufficient for years to come. In addition to scheduled services and
checking the battery every so often, it is also important to check the functioning of
your headlights and brake lights regularly. Not only is this safer for driving in the dark
and it can prevent car accidents, but it will save you money in the long run; fix-it
tickets are totally avoidable.

9. Replace your air filter

Think of having a dirty air filter as a car with polluted lungs. To avoid having your car
choke on performance, make sure to have your air filter replaced with a new one once
it accumulates much dirt. You don’t need much tools or specialization to have your
air filter replaced. All you need to do is to consult your owner’s manual, and you
don’t even need to worry about purchasing a replacement from any auto parts store
since air filters are pretty much generic in design.
10. Change Your Spark Plugs
If you notice that your engine is not working efficiently, then the reason could be the
spark plugs. If not checked, they could wear out and be covered in a buildup. Your car
manual should let you know when to replace them.
If your car is not performing as well as it usually does, you might want to check the
spark plugs and spark plug wires if they are old. If you find they are in bad condition,
replace them for better performance. Spark plugs usually last for 30,000+ miles; see
the owner's manual for more information.

Advantages:-

1. Machine Less failure

Predictive maintenance involves monitoring of machines using sensors and other
smart technologies. The data obtained provides information and prediction on the
health condition of machines. Early detection of defects and failures allows the
maintenance team to take fast action thus reducing the number of machine failures. It
provides extensive proactive and early warning and downtime forecasts in advance, so
your service team possesses a means to decide what to prioritize or scheduled early
replacement for the manufacturing part in a proactive manner, rather than reacting
upon downtime then acting on basis.

2. Increase in service Lifetime of Machines

Predictive maintenance is a maintenance strategy that involves calculation on the
frequency of repairs, severity of machine damage and the actual condition of the
machinery after repairs. This approach prevents severe damage to machine and also
other plants systems. Reducing the severity of machine damage will in turn prevent
propagation of machines defects. In addition, predictive maintenance offers the ability
to predict the mean time between failures (MTBF). This data gives mean in
determining the most effective cost in replacing the part of machines instead of
carrying out maintenance.

3. Increase in Return of Investment (ROI)

Reduction in machines failures increases productivity as the maintenance team and
managers are able to focus on vital maintenance labor.

4. Reduce in maintenance cost

The maintenance cost includes the cost of labor and maintenance department
overhead, also the spare parts and tools needed. Through predictive maintenance, the
reduction of severity of damage reduces the maintenance cost.
5. Improved Safety
Machines failures can lead to injuries and accidents. The ability to estimate the
failures through predictive maintenance provides safer work environment to the plants
workers.

Disadvantages:-

1. Planning and scheduling time

Organization has to spend considerable time in planning and implementing predictive
maintenance schedule.
2. Additional cost
Predictive maintenance involves the use of various types of smart technologies and
sensors. While these technologies can provide a lot of functionalities, they usually are
costly in the beginning of implementation. In addition, workers should to have the
ability to handle the new machines (sensors and other monitoring equipments) making
the organization required to invest in training or recruiting skilled personnels.

In conclusion, predictive maintenance can be costly in the beginning of

implementation, however it offers more advantages over time. From a cost
reduction viewpoint it is essential, but it does entail risk. When the proper care is
taken, the risks, however, can be minimized.
