PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Replaces and maintains normal magnesium levels, acts as § Mild hypomagnesemia

anticonvulsant and reduces muscle contractions § Seizures in preeclampsia
§ Eclampsia

Medication Administration
§ Overdose § IV- administer diluted store between
§ CNS toxicity, weak and absent deep tendon reflexes 68 and 77 degrees F but be sure to
§ Arrhythmias protect from freezing. Discard
§ Hypotension unused portion.
§ Hypocalcemia
§ Circulatory collapse § IM- Administer undiluted for adults
§ Respiratory distress and diluted in children cleanse with
alcohol swab inject and watch for any
irritation.

Contraindications/Precautions
- Myocardial damage, heart block or coma
- Impaired renal function
- Be careful when using Mag for preterm labor not FDA approved

§ Monitor magnesium levels and

EKG.

§ Monitor reflexes before each

dose

§ Monitor I&O and renal function

§ Calcium channel blockers cause increased mag- related adverse
effects
§ Monitor for seizure activity.
§ Cardiac glycosides causes serious cardiac conduction changes
§ CNS depressant causes CNS depression
§ Neuromuscular blockers causes neuromuscular blockage

Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness § Explain the use of the education

and the reason behind it being
§ Therapeutic range of magnesium level are maintained given.

§ Absent of seizures § Teach patient about low and high

magnesium level signs and
§ No signs of eclampsia symptoms and to report them.

§ Encourage pt to report any

adverse effects
