Q1 Q2 Q3 TOTAL
1. You are provided with the following:
BA1 which is a solution made by dissolving 3.2 g of an H 2X.nH2O= to make 1 litre of
solution. (Where X = 88).

BA2 which is 0.05M sodium hydroxide solution.

You are required to find, n, moles of water of crystallisation in one mole of the acid.
(H = 1, O = 16)

Procedure:
Pipette 25.0 (or 20.0)cm3 of BA1 into a conical flask. Add 2-3 drops of
phenolphthalein indicator. Titrate with BA2 until a permanent pink colour just
appears.
Repeat to get three more consistent results. Record your results in the table below:

Calculate:
a) The number of moles of sodium hydroxide that reacted.

1
b) The number of moles of the acid that reacted.

c) The concentration of the acid in moles per litre.

2
d) The value of n in H2X.nH2O.

2. You are provided with substance W that contains two cations and two anions.
Carry out the following tests to identify the cations and anions present in W.

Test Observation Conclusion

a) Heat two spatula
endfuls of W in a
boiling tube gently,
then strongly until no
further change.

b) To two spatula endfuls

of W in a boiling tube
add 8cm3 of distilled
water and shake
vigorously. Filter, keep
both filtrate and
residue. Divide the
filtrate into four parts.

3
i) To the first part add
sodium hydroxide
solution dropwise till in
excess, then warm.

ii) To the second part

add 2-3 drops of lead
(II) nitrate solution
followed by 1cm3 of
dilute nitric acid.

iii) To the third part add

3-4 drops of Barium
nitrate solution
followed by 1cm3 of
dilute nitric acid

4
iv) To the fourth part add
2-3 drops of silver
nitrate solution.

c) To the residue in a
test-tube add 2cm3 of
dilute nitric acid, warm
to dissolve. Dilute with
distilled water to make
8cm3 of solution.
Divide the solution into
four parts.

i) To the first part add

sodium hydroxide
solution dropwise till in
excess

5
ii) To the second part
add aqueous
ammonia dropwise till
in excess

iii) To the third part add

2-3 drops of dilute
hydrochloric acid,
warm then allow to
cool.

iv) To the fourth part add

2-3 drops of
potassium iodine
solution.
