Assignment # 1

Name: HEIDI A. ESCARMOSA Section: CED10-201A

Answer the following briefly. Explain your answer using your own words.

1. Explain your understanding about the following:

A. Science as an idea.

Science is a method for studying the world's structure and behavior through systematic
observation and experimentation. So, a scientific idea is a scientifically derived
explanation for how something works or the truth about some aspect of the world.

B. Science as an Intellectual activity.

Science is an intellectual activity because it carried out by humans with the goal of
learning more about the natural world in which they live and organizing that knowledge
into meaningful patterns. Science's main goal is to gather information (data).

C. Science as a body of knowledge.

Science is a body of knowledge that is built up by putting ideas to the test in a controlled
environment. It's a practical way of getting trustworthy answers to questions about the
world around us. Scientists try to figure out how to describe, explain, and predict natural
relationships and phenomena.

patterns. Science's main goal is to gather information (data).

2. How does human, science ideas and society plays an important role in
SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION?

Because it demonstrated the power of the human mind, the Scientific Revolution
influenced the development of Enlightenment individualist values.Science is one of the
most important channels of knowledge. It serves a specific purpose as well as a number
of other functions for the benefit of our society, including the creation of new knowledge,
the improvement of education, and the enhancement of our quality of life. Science has a
responsibility to respond to societal needs and global challenges.

3. Give important contributions of the following people during scientific

revolution.

A. NICOLAUS COPERNICUS

Copernicus (1473-1543) was a keen astronomer who published De Revolutionibus

Orbium Coelestium in 1543. He presented the heliocentric theory in this treatise, which
was based on the revolutionary idea that the Earth orbited the sun.

B. CHARLES DARWIN

Darwin's greatest contribution to science was to complete the Copernican Revolution by

developing the concept of nature as a system of moving matter governed by natural
laws for biology. The origins and adaptations of organisms were brought into the
scientific realm with Darwin's discovery of natural selection.

C. SIGMUND FREUD

Sigmund Freud made it possible to collect reliable data about man's inner life by
developing a novel observational method. The scientific hypotheses he developed in
response to these became the foundation of psychoanalysis.

4. Explain the important events in CRADLES OF EARLY SCIENCE

A. DEVELOPMENT OF SCIENCE IN MESOAMERICA

The Maya civilization is one of the most well-known civilizations, lasting roughly 2,000
years.
- Their advanced understanding of astronomy was incorporated into their temples and
other religious structures.
- They are known for their ability to predict eclipses and to plant and harvest using
astrological cycles. - They are also known for using two complex calendar systems to
measure time. - They devised a method for growing a variety of crops and constructing
elaborate cities using common machines and tools.
- They devised a rainbow of glittery paints made from a mineral called mica and built
looms for weaving cloth.
- They are also thought to be among the first to manufacture rubber products, having
done so 3,000 years before Goodyear received his patent in 1844.
- They were one of the world's first civilizations to use the Mayan hieroglyphics as a
writing system;
- They were also mathematicians, and they devised a numbering system based on the
number 20.
- They invented the concepts of zero and positional value independently of the Romans.

B. DEVELOPMENT OF SCIENCE IN ASIA

-Indians came up with a variety of innovative ideas and technologies that they can use
in their daily lives.
- Their iron steel is regarded as the best in the Roman Empire and is held in high
regard.
- Ayurveda, a system of traditional medicine that dates back to before 2500 BC in
ancient India, is still used as an alternative medicine.
- They discovered medicinal properties in plants, which led to the development of
medicines to treat a variety of ailments.
- The Susruta Samhita describes various surgical and medical procedures that were
popular in Ancient India.
- They devised theories about the universe's structure, the Earth's spherical self-
supporting shape, and the 360-day year divided into 12 equal parts of 30 days each

C. DEVELOPMENT OF SCIENCE IN AFRICA

Natural and mineral resources abound in Africa. Long before the Europeans colonized
this part of the world, science flourished there. In the African continent, astronomy was
well-known. Africans used one of three calendars: lunar, solar, or stellar, or a
combination of the three, according to documents. North Africa and the Nile Valley
imported iron technology from the Near East, allowing them to benefit from Bronze Age
to Iron Age developments.
