BME – Culture and entertainment (9)

9. Tétel - Culture - Szabadidő - művelődés, szórakozás

• music (listening to music, concerts, opera, playing an instrument)
• theatre
• museums, exhibitions

I listen to music at home and in the car. I’ve never been to a classical music concert, only to
rock concerts. I don’t like operas so much, but I would like to go to the Opera-house and the
Theatre of light opera sometimes.

I like both going to the cinema and the theatre. It’s true that I go to the cinema more often
because of the ticket prices and parking. The prices are cheaper if you visit the cinema. For
instance, our car was stolen once when we were in the theatre. Nowadays we go to theatre by
public transport.

If you want to go to the theatre, it is often necessary to book a seat before you go. Normally, it
is not necessary to book seats at the cinema.

If you book seats, you can choose the ones you want on a plan. Seats on ground level are
normally called the stalls; seats on the first floor are called the circle (or the balcony); if there
are seats on the second floor, they are called the balcony. When you go into the cinema or
theatre an usherette will take your ticket and show you to your seat.

In my town there are lots of

museum and famous art galleries:
Museum of Fine Arts, National
Museum, Museum of Modern
Art, Museum of Transportation,
Postal Museum, Science
Museum, Museum of History and
so on.

I go to exhibitions very rarely because I don’t have so much free-time and my daughter
doesn’t enjoy these visitations. I believe that cultural exhibitions are far more valuable when
we are adults because we need to know our roots and history to understand what we see.
Give a short talk about the theatre in 4-6 minutes.

 The reason people like going to the

theatre
 Ways of finding out what’s on at the
theatre (online/offline)
 The kinds of performances offered by
theatres (drama, comedy, musical theatre,
etc.)
 Performances attracting the biggest
audiences in Hungary (musicals,
comedies, their names, etc.)
 Facilities offered by theatres (snack bar, theatre insight, insight during rehearsal, etc.)
 Ways of buying tickets (online/offline)
 Ways of seating (balcony, stalls, aisle, etc.)
 Ticket types and prices (season tickets, last-minute tickets, gift vouchers, etc.)
 Your personal theatrical experience

What are the basic differences between the theatre and the cinema?
I think the main difference is the building. Theatres usually
are nice old buildings, while cinemas are only rooms in ordinary
buildings and big plazas. Another difference is the interior.
In the cinemas there’s a large screen, in the theatres there’s
a stage. People very rarely dress up when they to the
cinema.

Are you a theatre- or rather a cinema-goer?

I like both going to the cinema and the theatre. It’s true that I go to the cinema more often, but
it is mainly due to the fact that a lot more films are presented a year than plays.
